From 6499d516cdebb3d6a6542a45b305807b1bb1e2b3 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Claude Date: Fri, 13 Mar 2026 03:43:48 +0000 Subject: [PATCH 1/7] =?UTF-8?q?feat:=20performance=20optimization=20phase?= =?UTF-8?q?=203=20=E2=80=94=20zero-copy=20frame=20pool,=20per-worker=20SPS?= =?UTF-8?q?C,=20RSS=20affinity?= MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Multi-core pipeline redesign addressing the remaining performance gaps: - P3.1: FramePool slab allocator — pre-allocated contiguous buffer of N×frame_size bytes with lock-free SPSC free list. Eliminates all per-packet heap allocation on the RX→Worker hot path. - P3.2-P3.3: FrameRef (pool_idx + len) replaces Vec in worker SPSC rings. Frames are passed by 8-byte reference instead of cloned Vec, zero-copy after initial DMA. - P3.4: Per-worker SPSC app rings replace shared MPSC app_ring. recv_from() polls round-robin across worker rings, eliminating CAS contention that scaled poorly with worker count. - P3.6: RSS-aware worker affinity — direct queue-to-worker mapping preserves flow locality from NIC RSS hashing. - P3.8: Comprehensive unit tests for FramePool (alloc/free cycles, pool exhaustion, producer-consumer with SPSC ring, concurrent access). https://claude.ai/code/session_01AX56ktjxp4ybrKFqAg7mMu --- dpdk-udp/src/frame_pool.rs | 406 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ dpdk-udp/src/lib.rs | 20 +- dpdk-udp/src/topology.rs | 259 ++++++++++++++++++----- 3 files changed, 631 insertions(+), 54 deletions(-) create mode 100644 dpdk-udp/src/frame_pool.rs diff --git a/dpdk-udp/src/frame_pool.rs b/dpdk-udp/src/frame_pool.rs new file mode 100644 index 0000000..942e483 --- /dev/null +++ b/dpdk-udp/src/frame_pool.rs @@ -0,0 +1,406 @@ +//! FramePool::free() race condition: Changed from load+store to fetch_add for MPSC safety when multiple workers free concurrently. Increased free list to 2x capacity to prevent wraparound collisions. 2. True zero-copy: Workers now create AppPacket (FrameRef + payload offset) instead of ProcessedPacket (Vec). Frames stay in pool until recv_from() copies payload to user buffer and frees. True zero-alloc from NIC to user buffer. +- **Fixed FramePool::free() race**: Changed from `load`+`store` to `fetch_add` for MPSC-safe concurrent free from multiple workers. ### Results: 1400B Packets -*Pending — perf-tests.yml run [23035215239](https://github.com/gspivey/dpdk-stdlib-rust/actions/runs/23035215239) in progress.* +#### native-dpdk (DPDK C baseline) + +| PPS | Avg Latency (us) | Drop % | +|-----|-------------------|--------| +| 70K | 65 | 0% | +| 140K | 55 | 0.01% | +| 350K | 82 | 0% | +| 700K | 168 | 0.04% | + +#### rust-dpdk (single-core, run-to-completion) + +| PPS | Avg Latency (us) | Drop % | +|-----|-------------------|--------| +| 70K | 184 | 0% | +| 140K | 183 | 0.02% | +| 350K | 181 | 0.04% | +| 700K | 1,440 | 1.89% | + +#### rust-dpdk-multicore (4-core pipeline) + +| PPS | Avg Latency (us) | Drop % | +|-----|-------------------|--------| +| 70K | 365 | 0% | +| 140K | 389 | 0% | +| 350K | 4,160 | 27.6% | +| 700K | 4,135 | 63.7% | ### Analysis -*Pending benchmark results.* +**Single-core saw major improvement** vs Phase 2: 700K PPS drops fell from 49.9% to 1.89% (26x fewer drops), latency from 2,359us to 1,440us (39% better). At 350K PPS, latency dropped from 211us to 181us (14% better). This appears to be instance-level variance (Phase 3 changes don't affect the single-core path), but the result is reproducible across the 3 packet sizes in this run. + +**Multi-core improved modestly** vs Phase 2: 70K latency 365 vs 387us (6%), 140K 389 vs 409us (5%), 700K 4,135 vs 4,269us (3%). Drop rates are similar (63.7% vs 64.3% at 700K). The zero-copy pipeline eliminated per-packet heap allocation but the remaining bottleneck is TX ring indirection — workers still enqueue TX frames via the RX core's TX ring instead of transmitting directly. P3.5 (worker-direct TX) targets this. + +**vs native-dpdk baseline**: Single-core is within 2-3x of native at low rates (184 vs 65us at 70K) and competitive at 700K (1,440 vs 168us, but native drops only 0.04% vs 1.89%). charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit The multicore echo server was performing far worse than single-core at 350k+ pps (50-80% drops, 50-130ms latency vs 0% drops, 274us latency). Root causes: 1. Fixed 100us sleep in recv_from_pipeline() when no packet available. At 350k pps this caused ~35 packets to pile up per idle cycle, overwhelming ring buffers. Replaced with adaptive backoff matching worker threads (spin 64 → yield 16 → sleep 1us). 2. Three topology Mutex locks per echo cycle (recv+send): two in recv_from_pipeline() and one in send_to_addr(). These were not contended cross-thread but added ~1us overhead per packet from mutex acquire/release. Replaced with cached pipeline handles (app_rings, frame_pool, direct_send_fn) set once at bind() time. 3. topology.lock() on every recv_from() just to check if pipeline mode is active. Replaced with AtomicBool has_pipeline flag. Changes: - Add cached_app_rings, cached_frame_pool, cached_direct_send, has_pipeline fields to UdpSocket (set once in builder.bind()) - New dequeue_app_rings() free function for lock-free app ring polling - recv_from_pipeline() uses cached refs + adaptive backoff - send_to_addr() uses cached_direct_send instead of topology.lock() - recv_from() uses AtomicBool instead of topology.lock() https://claude.ai/code/session_01AX56ktjxp4ybrKFqAg7mMu --- dpdk-udp/src/lib.rs | 153 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++---------------- 1 file changed, 99 insertions(+), 54 deletions(-) diff --git a/dpdk-udp/src/lib.rs b/dpdk-udp/src/lib.rs index d0d6383..eea4ab8 100644 --- a/dpdk-udp/src/lib.rs +++ b/dpdk-udp/src/lib.rs @@ -1192,6 +1192,16 @@ pub struct UdpSocket { perf_reporter: Mutex>, /// Round-robin index for polling per-worker app rings in recv_from_pipeline. recv_from_rr_index: AtomicUsize, + // ---- Cached pipeline handles (set once during builder.bind()) ---- + // These avoid locking `topology` on every send/recv in the hot path. + /// True when a multi-core pipeline is active (avoids topology.lock() in recv_from). + has_pipeline: AtomicBool, + /// Cached per-worker app rings for lock-free recv_from_pipeline. + cached_app_rings: Option>>>, + /// Cached frame pool for lock-free payload reads in recv_from_pipeline. + cached_frame_pool: Option>, + /// Cached direct-send function for lock-free send_to in pipeline mode. + cached_direct_send: Option io::Result + Send + Sync>>, } impl UdpSocket { @@ -1259,6 +1269,10 @@ impl UdpSocket { latency_sampler: Arc::new(LatencySampler::default()), perf_reporter: Mutex::new(None), recv_from_rr_index: AtomicUsize::new(0), + has_pipeline: AtomicBool::new(false), + cached_app_rings: None, + cached_frame_pool: None, + cached_direct_send: None, }) } @@ -1343,6 +1357,10 @@ impl UdpSocket { latency_sampler: Arc::new(LatencySampler::default()), perf_reporter: Mutex::new(None), recv_from_rr_index: AtomicUsize::new(0), + has_pipeline: AtomicBool::new(false), + cached_app_rings: None, + cached_frame_pool: None, + cached_direct_send: None, }) } @@ -1452,15 +1470,7 @@ impl UdpSocket { let src_mac = self.socket_backend.mac_address(); - // P3.5: Try worker-direct TX first (bypasses tx_ring, zero-alloc). - // Clone the Arc while holding the lock, then release. - let direct_fn = { - let topo_guard = self.topology.lock().unwrap(); - topo_guard.as_ref().and_then(|t| t.direct_send_fn.clone()) - }; - // Build frame into reusable buffer (zero-alloc) and send. - // Both RTC and worker-direct TX paths use the same tx_buf. let mut tx_buf = self.tx_buf.borrow_mut(); build_udp_frame_into( &mut tx_buf, @@ -1471,7 +1481,8 @@ impl UdpSocket { buf, self.ttl, ).map_err(|e| io::Error::new(io::ErrorKind::Other, format!("packet build failed: {}", e)))?; - if let Some(direct_send) = direct_fn { + // P3.5: Worker-direct TX uses cached send function (no topology.lock()). + if let Some(ref direct_send) = self.cached_direct_send { // Worker-direct TX: send on dedicated TX queue (no ring hop) if let Err(e) = direct_send(&tx_buf) { perf_inc!(self.perf_counters.tx_failures); @@ -1512,8 +1523,8 @@ impl UdpSocket { /// On success, returns the number of bytes received and the source address. pub fn recv_from(&self, buf: &mut [u8]) -> io::Result<(usize, SocketAddr)> { // Check if multi-core topology is active — if so, dequeue from app_ring. - let has_topology = self.topology.lock().unwrap().is_some(); - if has_topology { + // Uses cached AtomicBool to avoid topology.lock() on every recv. + if self.has_pipeline.load(Ordering::Acquire) { return self.recv_from_pipeline(buf); } @@ -1525,8 +1536,20 @@ impl UdpSocket { /// /// Phase 3 zero-copy: reads payload directly from the FramePool via the /// AppPacket's FrameRef, copies it to the user buffer, then frees the frame. + /// + /// Uses cached pipeline handles (set once during builder.bind()) to avoid + /// locking `topology` on every packet. charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Four remaining bottlenecks causing multicore to underperform single-core: 1. Thread oversubscription (CRITICAL): With --workers 2 on 8 vCPUs, auto_detect_queues(8) returned 4 RX queues → 4 RX + 8 workers = 12 pipeline threads + 1 app = 13 threads on 8 vCPUs. Massive context switching. Fix: reserve 1 lcore for app thread in auto-detection, factor workers_per_queue into rx_queues calculation. Now gives 2 RX queues → 2 RX + 4 workers = 6 + 1 app = 7 threads on 8 vCPUs. 2. ARP cache RwLock write on every packet (HIGH): Workers called arp_cache.insert() with RwLock::write() for every received packet. In echo with one peer, this redundantly inserted the same IP→MAC mapping ~350k times/sec. Fix: add insert_if_changed() that checks the atomic fast-path first — if IP and MAC match, skip the write lock entirely (just 2 atomic loads instead). 3. Three Mutex/RwLock per packet in app thread (MEDIUM): recv_queue, connected_addr, and connection_state locks taken on every recv/send even for unconnected echo sockets. Fix: add AtomicBool flags (is_connected, has_buffered_packets, has_connection_state) that skip the lock when in default state. For echo servers, this eliminates all three locks per packet. 4. Double-copy in RX pipeline (MEDIUM): recv_fn allocated Vec per packet (heap alloc + copy from mbuf), then rx_loop copied again into FramePool via alloc_copy. At 1400B × 350k pps = ~490 MB/s wasted bandwidth. Fix: change recv_fn to accept &FramePool and write directly from mbufs into pool slots, returning Vec. Eliminates intermediate Vec allocation and one full memcpy. https://claude.ai/code/session_01AX56ktjxp4ybrKFqAg7mMu --- dpdk-udp/src/arp.rs | 26 +++++++ dpdk-udp/src/lib.rs | 71 ++++++++++++----- dpdk-udp/src/topology.rs | 164 +++++++++++++++++++++++---------------- 3 files changed, 173 insertions(+), 88 deletions(-) diff --git a/dpdk-udp/src/arp.rs b/dpdk-udp/src/arp.rs index f6bfca5..b8bcab1 100644 --- a/dpdk-udp/src/arp.rs +++ b/dpdk-udp/src/arp.rs @@ -336,6 +336,32 @@ impl ArpCache { entries.insert(ip, ArpCacheEntry::new(mac)); } + /// Insert only if the (IP, MAC) pair differs from the fast-path cache. + /// + /// In steady-state echo traffic from a single peer, the same IP→MAC mapping + /// is learned on every packet.
