Description

This PR delivers a comprehensive system architecture upgrade for ContestSync:

  1. Queue Migration (Kafka ➡️ CloudAMQP LavinMQ):

    • Replaced segmentio/kafka-go with official rabbitmq/amqp091-go (AMQP 0.9.1).
    • Increased worker connection limit from 2-3 to 40 parallel connections, eliminating idle socket drops (EOF errors) and allowing multiple server/worker instances to scale freely.
    • Built transparent fallback to thread-safe in-memory channels (chan) when CLOUDAMQP_URL is omitted.
  2. Neon DB Optimization & Cron Fixes:

    • Changed extraction cron schedule from @daily (midnight-only) to @every 30m.
    • Added an immediate startup extraction trigger to populate PostgreSQL on server boot.
    • Preserves Neon DB free tier compute hours by running tasks in-memory and querying Postgres only during active execution.
    • Added protection so empty scraper responses do not wipe existing upcoming DB contests.
  3. Google Calendar Permission Validation & 24h User Cleanup:

    • Added GET /auth/calendar/validate endpoint to check live Google Calendar API read/write permissions.
    • Made users.refresh_token nullable in migrations/001_init.sql.
    • Added UI warning banner on the Preferences page for missing permissions.
    • Added automatic 24-hour scheduler pruning for ungranted/permission-denied users.
  4. Asynchronous Telegram Observability Telemetry:

    • Implemented non-blocking, buffered Telegram alerts for upcoming contest extraction metrics per platform and user calendar sync results.
    • Fixed HTTP client timeout (15s) to prevent startup context deadlines.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The application replaces Kafka with RabbitMQ AMQP and an in-memory fallback. It adds calendar-access validation, tokenized iCalendar feeds, OpenTelemetry metrics, Telegram event callbacks, more frequent extraction, resilient scraper requests, and a redesigned preferences interface.

Changes

Core runtime and access

Layer / File(s) Summary
AMQP queue foundation
config/config.go, go.mod, internal/queue/amqp.go, internal/queue/queue_test.go, internal/api/admin_handlers.go
Configuration resolves AMQP URLs. The queue supports RabbitMQ and in-memory processing, task publishing, consumers, cache invalidation, telemetry, health checks, draining, and shutdown.
Runtime observability and scheduling
cmd/server/main.go, cmd/worker/main.go, internal/observability/otel.go, internal/scheduler/scheduler.go, internal/sync/sync.go, internal/observability/telegram.go, internal/extractor/contest.go
Server and worker metrics are initialized. Telegram callbacks are assigned to sync and queue processing. Extraction starts immediately and runs every 30 minutes. Scheduler filtering and cleanup use calendar access and refresh-token state. Extractor requests use retries and pooled connections.
Calendar access validation
internal/api/handlers.go, internal/api/middleware.go, migrations/001_init.sql, migrations/002_add_has_calendar_access.sql, models/models.go, models/models_test.go
The API validates Google Calendar access and caches results. Refresh tokens can be null. Calendar access is stored and exposed in user data. Rate limits now use both request path and client IP.
iCalendar feed and preferences interface
internal/api/handlers.go, cmd/server/main.go, web/src/app.js, web/static/preferences.html, web/src/style.css, web/static/style.bundle.css, web/package.json, web/vite.config.js
The API serves tokenized contest events as iCalendar data. The preferences page displays calendar and feed state, separates save and synchronization actions, and adds dashboard and responsive layouts. Vite now emits the configured stylesheet asset.
Runtime documentation
README.md
Documentation describes AMQP configuration, scheduling, calendar validation, cleanup, queue behavior, extractor handling, and application topology.

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to b7b5b

This PR changes queue processing, calendar feeds, synchronization, and telemetry in ways that can discard work, expose private user information, produce partially updated contest data, or block valid calendar synchronization during temporary service failures. These current-head correctness, availability, and privacy risks should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

The Telegram callback runs inside the deferred cleanup and can block for 2 seconds.

TriggerSystemEvent sends to a buffered channel with a 2-second timeout (internal/observability/telegram.go lines 293-300). This defer executes on the calling goroutine. In the worker, that goroutine is one of the 10 concurrent sync consumers (internal/queue/amqp.go lines 310-319). When the Telegram queue saturates, each sync worker stalls for 2 seconds after finishing its work, which reduces sync throughput and delays Drain during shutdown.

Invoke the callback in a separate goroutine, or make the send non-blocking inside TriggerSystemEvent.

Add a test for the empty-result guard in handleExtraction.

The PR states that an empty scraper response must not delete existing upcoming contests. internal/queue/amqp.go lines 345-348 implement that rule, and no test covers it. A regression there silently wipes upcoming contests for a platform.

The guard needs no broker, so a test can call handleExtraction with a stubbed fetcher in extractor.Fetchers and assert that no DELETE is issued. Add a test for Health as well, because it is consumed by the health endpoint.

Gate startup extraction and propagate shutdown cancellation.

@every 30m queues 7 platform tasks 48 times per day, or 336 tasks per day. Each server start queues 7 additional tasks. Gate the startup run with a Valkey timestamp or distributed lock, and pass the shutdown context to scheduled and startup callbacks. Scheduler.Start() is called only by cmd/server/main.go; the worker does not start it.

Cache the calendar validation result. The preferences page calls this route on every load.

web/src/app.js initPreferences calls /auth/calendar/validate each time the preferences page opens. The handler performs a live Google Calendar request. Two consequences follow:

  • Each page load consumes Google API quota, which is shared across all users of the project.
  • The response time of the preferences page now depends on Google API latency.

This route sits behind the global limiter at line 168 (300 requests per minute), which does not bound the aggregate Google call rate.

Cache the validation result per user in Valkey with a short TTL, for example 5 minutes, and invalidate it when the refresh token changes. Consider a dedicated rate limit for this route.

Recover disconnected AMQP connections and report their health accurately. When the broker disconnects, the stored connection and channel remain closed, consumers exit, and publishers continue failing without reconnecting or restarting consumption. Health must return an error for closed or missing connections and channels. Handle NotifyClose with bounded redial backoff, queue redeclaration, and consumer restart; also rename health-service keys from kafka to queue wherever they are exposed.

Wrap the prune and the upsert in one transaction.

Line 355 deletes upcoming contests, and lines 360-377 insert the new set in a separate batch. Between the two statements, a concurrent reader observes a contest list with rows removed and not yet restored. The scheduler now runs extraction every 30 minutes (internal/scheduler/scheduler.go line 33), so this window opens 48 times per day for each platform instead of once.

Use a single transaction so readers never observe the intermediate state.

🔧 Proposed fix
-	_, err = q.DB.Exec(ctx, "DELETE FROM contests WHERE platform = $1 AND start_time > NOW() AND id != ALL($2)", platform, newIDs)
-	if err != nil {
- slog.Error("failed to prune obsolete upcoming contests in consumer", "platform", platform, "error", err)

+ slog.Error("failed to prune obsolete upcoming contests in consumer", "platform", platform, "error", err)
+		return
+	}
+
+	batch := &pgx.Batch{}
 	for _, c := range contests {

Then send the batch through tx, check every br.Exec() error, close the batch reader, and commit only when all statements succeed.

Also note that lines 374-376 only log a batch error. A completely failed batch still reaches logDatabaseContestsTelemetry and reports success to Telegram.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Telegram messages are HTML-escaped twice, so the group receives literal markup. The shared root cause is the TriggerSystemEvent contract: it applies EscapeHTML to the whole details argument (internal/observability/telegram.go lines 293-300). Both new call sites pass strings that already contain <b> and <code> markup.

  • internal/sync/sync.go#L122-L130: stop wrapping the message in HTML tags, or route it through a callback that does not escape; then remove the duplicate EscapeTelegramHTML helper at lines 487-492.
  • internal/queue/amqp.go#L411-L414: build the extraction metrics message as plain text, or send it through the non-escaping callback.

Decide one owner for escaping. Either the producer formats HTML and the transport sends it unchanged, or the producer sends plain text and the transport escapes it.

Inline comments:
In `@internal/api/handlers.go`:
- Around line 875-884: Check rows.Err() after the row-iteration loop and before
writing the calendar response; on error, return an appropriate server error
instead of sending the partial feed. Locate the iteration in the handler
containing the final buf.WriteString("END:VCALENDAR\r\n"), and bound its
database query with an upper time constraint or LIMIT to prevent unbounded
result growth.
- Around line 345-353: Update writeJSONAndCache to call json.Marshal before
setting the response status or writing the body, handle marshal errors with an
appropriate non-success response, and only write the marshaled data and cache it
after successful serialization.
- Around line 306-334: Remove the details field from both the service-creation
failure response and the calendar_api_error response in the relevant handler,
and log the underlying errors server-side instead. Preserve the existing valid,
code, error_type, and cache behavior, applying the same redaction to both
payloads.
- Around line 269-282: Introduce and reuse a shared CalendarValidationCacheKey
helper for the validation cache key in both ValidateCalendarAccess and
GoogleCallback, replacing duplicated formatting. Update the refresh-token lookup
in ValidateCalendarAccess to use the read database pool with the same h.ReadDB
fallback behavior as ServeICalFeed, while retaining h.DB when no read pool is
available.
- Around line 843-874: Update the iCalendar generation around the VEVENT builder
to add the required DTSTAMP property, and introduce an escapeICalText helper
that escapes backslashes before semicolons, commas, and line breaks. Apply it to
the contest name, description fields, and LOCATION/description URL values, while
leaving the URI-valued URL property unescaped; use fmt.Fprintf where appropriate
for the affected formatted writes.
- Around line 316-336: Update the Calendar API error classification around
Calendars.Get("primary").Do() to use errors.As for both googleapi.Error and
oauth2.RetrieveError. Preserve credential_failure for unauthorized or forbidden
Google API responses, and classify retrieve errors as credential_failure only
when ErrorCode is "invalid_grant"; leave other retrieve errors as
operational_failure.
- Around line 803-834: Protect ServeICalFeed with an unguessable per-user feed
token instead of accepting enumerable user_id values: validate the token with
strconv.Atoi only where an ID-based authenticated route still requires parsing,
query the user by its feed-token column, and return the appropriate not-found
response without exposing whether IDs exist. Keep any ID-based route behind
RequireAuth, and change per-user feed caching from public to private or
no-store.

Apply the same fix in `@cmd/server/main.go` at line 180: The same public feed
route is exposed from the server entrypoint.

In `@internal/extractor/contest.go`:
- Around line 60-169: Extract the duplicated retry, bounded-read, status
handling, and jittered backoff from fetchJSON and fetchPage into a shared
doFetch helper driven by request options. Add context.Context parameters through
both functions and all platform fetchers and tests, create requests with
http.NewRequestWithContext, and make backoff waits cancelable via the context.
Preserve each caller’s method, body, and headers while using the shared
implementation.
- Around line 45-54: Update the httpClient timeout in the client configuration
to 15 seconds by setting httpClient.Timeout to 15 * time.Second; leave the
existing transport configuration and retry behavior unchanged.

In `@internal/observability/otel.go`:
- Around line 46-58: Update the endpoint normalization in the OTLP metrics setup
to retain any configured base path from OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT while still
removing the scheme and separating the host as required by
otlpmetrichttp.WithEndpoint. Ensure the configured path is preserved before
appending /v1/metrics via WithURLPath, so tenant-prefixed endpoints remain
intact.

In `@internal/queue/queue_test.go`:
- Around line 69-81: Update TestHandleExtractionZeroContests to exercise
handleExtraction with an empty scraper response using the existing
database-backed test setup, and assert that previously stored upcoming contests
remain unchanged. Retain the queue construction and health checks only as
supporting setup, not as the primary assertion.

Apply the same fix in `@README.md` around lines 76 - 80: This site documents the
same missing regression coverage for the empty-result path.

In `@README.md`:
- Line 48: Add a blank line after each newly added Markdown heading, including
the headings around “High-Concurrency CloudAMQP LavinMQ Queue Engine” and the
other referenced headings, so each heading is separated from its following
content and satisfies markdownlint MD022.
- Around line 28-34: Update the extraction schedule entries in the README table
to state “On startup, then every 30m” instead of only “Every 30m Cron,”
reflecting both startup execution and recurring scheduling.
- Around line 96-97: Update the SESSION_SECRET and ENCRYPTION_KEY examples in
the README table to use clearly marked, generated 64-character hexadecimal
placeholders, matching their documented 32-byte requirements; do not retain the
current 32-character values.
- Around line 71-74: Update the “Live Scope Verification” documentation to state
that validation results are cached for up to 5 minutes rather than real-time,
and document the existing cache invalidation paths in the surrounding calendar
validation section.
- Around line 71-74: Update the “Live Calendar Scope Validation & 24h Ungranted
User Pruning” documentation to describe the validation as a cached calendar
read-access check, not real-time verification or proof of read/write access.
Alternatively, change the documented validation behavior to explicitly validate
the write operations used by synchronization, including Calendars.Insert and
Events.Insert.
- Around line 87-107: Update the README environment-variable table by removing
the obsolete KAFKA_* entries and documenting CLOUDAMQP_URL with AMQP_URL as its
fallback; state that when neither is configured, the runtime uses the in-memory
queue and tasks may be lost on restart.

In `@web/package.json`:
- Around line 9-10: Update the web package configuration and build setup around
the Vite dependency to declare and enforce a supported Node.js floor of 20.19+
or 22.12+ before vite build runs, using the repository’s existing engine or
version-enforcement mechanism where available.

In `@web/static/style.bundle.css`:
- Around line 1-2: Update the Stylelint configuration or lint script to exclude
the generated style.bundle.css output, preferably using a *.bundle.css ignore
pattern, while retaining linting for the source stylesheet. Ensure the generated
Vite marker and minified bundle are no longer lint targets.

In `@web/vite.config.js`:
- Line 21: Update the Vite build configuration to set build.lib.cssFileName to
style.bundle, and remove the assetFileNames rule so CSS naming is scoped to the
library’s stylesheet output.

Protect user-specific iCalendar feeds with an unguessable credential. /feed/ical is public and accepts a user ID, allowing account enumeration and retrieval of platform-filtered events; Cache-Control: public can also retain private feeds in shared caches. Use a per-user random token or authenticated access, query by that credential, mark responses private or no-store, and parse IDs strictly with strconv.Atoi.

Use the new CalendarValidationCacheKey helper here.

In `@internal/api/handlers.go` around lines 262 - 263, Replace the inline valKey
formatting in the handler containing GoogleCallback with the existing
CalendarValidationCacheKey helper, passing userID as required. Preserve the
existing Valkey.Del invalidation behavior and use the helper consistently with

Verify message persistence at publish time.

The queue constructor declares durable queues, but durable queues do not make individual messages persistent. Confirm that extraction and synchronization publishers set amqp.Persistent or DeliveryMode: 2. Otherwise, Line 52 overstates durability and broker restarts can drop tasks.

Key the limiter by route pattern, not by the raw request path.

r.URL.Path is client-controlled. A client that varies the path gets a fresh counter for each distinct value, so the per-IP budget for the global middleware no longer applies across requests. Each distinct path also creates a Redis key with its own TTL, so a client can inflate Redis key count. earlyLimiter caps burst volume but does not restore the intended per-IP budget.

Use the matched route pattern from chi, and fall back to a constant when no route matches.

🔒️ Proposed fix
-				key := "ratelimit:" + r.URL.Path + ":" + ip
+				scope := "unmatched"
+				if rctx := chi.RouteContext(r.Context()); rctx != nil {
+					if pattern := rctx.RoutePattern(); pattern != "" {
+						scope = pattern
+					}
+				}
+				key := "ratelimit:" + scope + ":" + ip

Note: RoutePattern() is populated after route matching. Verify that the middleware runs where the pattern is available, otherwise pass an explicit scope name into RateLimitMiddleware.

internal/api/handlers.go Line 454 scans refresh_token into a string in Me. pgx fails to scan SQL NULL into *string, so Me returns 404 user not found for any row with a NULL refresh_token. ValidateCalendarAccess at Line 333 and ManualSync at Line 100 hide the same failure behind a credential error, which masks the real cause.

Either keep writing empty strings and add a CHECK (refresh_token IS NOT NULL)-free DEFAULT '', or read the column with COALESCE(refresh_token, '') at every call site.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Sandbox verification was unavailable.

The local csrfToken declaration breaks getCSRFToken.

Line 262 declares a function-local csrfToken, and Line 298 assigns the value to it. getCSRFToken at Line 468 reads a csrfToken binding in module scope. The local declaration therefore never reaches the value that securePost sends in X-CSRF-Token, and every /preferences and /sync POST is rejected. If no module-level csrfToken exists, getCSRFToken throws instead.

Assign to the module-level variable, and remove the local declaration.

The iCal feed credential is derived from the user ID instead of stored as a secret. Both sites compute sha256("<user_id>ical_feed_secret"), so any client can generate a valid token for any account and read that user's feed. The lookup side compounds the problem by also accepting the raw user ID and by scanning the whole users table on every request.

  • internal/api/handlers.go#L477-L478: replace the derived token with a random per-user token read from a new users.ical_feed_token column, generated with crypto/rand.
  • internal/api/handlers.go#L900-L945: look up the stored token with one indexed query, remove the raw user-ID comparison, and remove the user_id parameter branch.

Nothing displays the operational-warning panel.

web/static/preferences.html Line 81 adds a hidden operational-warning element for transient Calendar API failures. initPreferences never calls the validation endpoint and never shows this element, so users see the credential warning path only. Call ValidateCalendarAccess and branch on the returned code value: show permission-warning for credential_failure and operational-warning for operational_failure.

Scope the header div rule to a class.

header div matches every div inside any header on any page, including nested wrappers, and !important prevents later overrides. Add a class to the dashboard header container in web/static/preferences.html and target that class instead.
