π [BUG] - ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'pkg_resources' on fresh install with setuptools β₯ 71Β #430
Steps to reproduce: pip install eth-wake wake test
Error:
`ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'pkg_resources'
Root cause: eth-wake pins eth-account<0.9, which forces eth-keyfile<0.7. eth-keyfile 0.6.x has a hard import pkg_resources at the top of its init.py. setuptools 71 removed pkg_resources as a top-level importable module, so any environment with setuptools>=71 (the default on current Python/Homebrew installs) breaks on import. eth-keyfile 0.8+ already removed the pkg_resources dependency β but it is unreachable due to the pin chain.
Fix:
Lift the eth-account upper bound from <0.9 to allow >=0.9. Current latest is 0.13.x, which pulls eth-keyfile>=0.8 and has no pkg_resources dependency.
# pyproject.toml β change:
eth-account>=0.8,<0.9
# to:
eth-account>=0.8
This unblocks the full dependency chain and makes eth-wake installable on any modern Python environment without manual setuptools pinning.
