Summary

Register a manually dispatched managed-Wren release workflow on the default branch. Stage exact macOS arm64 CPython and wrenai artifacts, resolve and hash the complete wheel closure, and emit review metadata before the protected license-approval job can publish any runtime assets.

The release helper preserves UTF-8 license metadata and generates installation-independent tree attestations. It verifies each recorded console script against its actual bytes and normalizes only its selected venv interpreter prefix; script contents, executable modes and package metadata remain part of the evidence. A shared helper also supports verified launcher relocation by the later consumer.

Approval boundary

Publication requires managed-wren-license-approved and MANAGED_WREN_APPROVAL_SHA256, bound to the candidate manifest and both license inventories. The publish job re-fetches only those exact sources and checks their hashes. Release tags are validated, serialized and pinned to the workflow commit, without changing the repository's latest release.

This PR provides release tooling and shared attestation helpers. It does not approve redistribution, publish runtime assets, configure application routing, add a production certification grant or enable Native Sessions. The license metadata requires maintainer review; an approved manifest still needs a later consumer anchor.

Validation

  • 12 standalone Node contracts passed, including 7 offline Python metadata tests.
  • Workflow syntax, helper syntax and diff checks passed.
  • Local staging verified CPython 3.11.16 and 41 selected wheels for wrenai 0.13.0; hash-locked offline installation and dependency checks passed.
  • The same exact closure produced matching attestations in separate installation roots and after relocation into a path containing spaces. Wren startup passed after relocation.
  • Regression tests reject changed script bytes, modes, interpreter bindings, symlinks, malformed records and duplicate console ownership. UTF-8 license text is preserved; malformed UTF-8 is rejected.

Hosted release staging, protected license approval and authenticated Native Sessions acceptance remain pending.

Walkthrough

This change adds managed Wren release inputs, deterministic runtime evidence generation, checksum-verified staging, approval-gated publishing, and automated contract tests.

Changes

Managed Wren release

Layer / File(s) Summary
Release inputs and evidence generation
apps/genbi/managed-wren/release-inputs.json, apps/genbi/scripts/managed-wren-release.mjs
Defines pinned Python and wrenai assets. Generates candidate and approved manifests, license evidence, provenance, and release asset verification.
Runtime tree hashing and entry-point relocation
apps/genbi/managed-wren/runtime-tree.cjs, apps/genbi/scripts/managed-wren-release-tree.test.mjs
Validates venv console scripts and RECORD entries, relocates launchers, and computes deterministic runtime tree digests. Tests cover relocation, digest changes, and rejection cases.
Runtime staging and approval-gated publishing
.github/workflows/managed-wren-runtime.yml, apps/genbi/scripts/managed-wren-release.py
Stages checksum-verified assets and generates wheel, Python build, license, and requirements metadata. The publish job checks approval evidence and re-verifies assets before creating a release.
Release workflow contract checks
apps/genbi/scripts/managed-wren-release.test.mjs, apps/genbi/scripts/managed-wren-release.test.py, .github/workflows/managed-wren-release-ci.yml
Tests release inventories, metadata parsing, runtime tags, workflow boundaries, approval digests, and configured staging inputs. CI runs contract checks for changes to the managed-Wren tree.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 64f4a

This change adds a manually dispatched, approval-gated workflow for managed Wren runtime releases. It pins inputs, verifies checksums, generates review metadata and contract tests, and adds path-filtered CI. It does not publish or activate a runtime by itself. The earlier concern about an unused Python setup in CI no longer applies, because the contract suite now runs a Python helper test. No known blocking risk remains.

release-inputs.json instead of hardcoded values. Reuse the manifest’s
python.upstream and wrenai fields for the corresponding commands, and preserve
pipefail so extraction failures cannot be masked.
- Around line 43-53: Update the wheel METADATA parsing in the script to use
email.parser for RFC 822 headers, stopping at the first blank line and
preserving repeated fields without description text overwriting metadata. Derive
the recorded license from License-Expression first, then supported License

existing Name, Version, PyPI lookup, and source identity behavior intact.

Remove the unused Python setup from this contract-only job.

The job only runs node --check and node --test, so no step consumes Python. Remove actions/setup-python@v5. If Python is required, add a Python-specific check and set python-version to 3.11.16.
