How opendots is open source? All apikeys are paid.
The open developer community is dumb mad. They integrated paid services in every project and labeled as open source. DB paid, auth paid, web search paid, slack, WhatsApp, telegram, everything is paid.
Why you don't used open/free apikeys?
Web Search is duckduckgo free. Auth jwt free, DB sql/postgres free, ai engine (Openrouter) free.
Hi @arbaz0010, Thanks for raising this. I think there’s an important distinction here between open source and free to operate.
OpenDots being open source means the source code is available for anyone to inspect, modify, self-host, and contribute to. It doesn’t mean that every external service or piece of infrastructure it integrates with has to be free.
Databases, authentication, search, AI models, messaging providers, hosting, etc., all have operating costs somewhere. Some providers offer free tiers or open-source/self-hosted alternatives, while others are paid services.
That said, I think the suggestion of supporting more free or self-hosted alternatives is completely reasonable. If there are specific integrations you’d like to see supported, we’d be happy to also consider those separately.
@NathanTarbert I feel OP's comment makes sense in here. Yes, in terms of the project's perspective, not everything needs to be free. But to be contributor-friendly, the most important part would be to keep the setup and development cycle easy enough. 3rd party services are good when they offer at least a free plan. The best way is sticking with self-hostable services, though.
I would love to share my list of suggestions if you could state which parts of the project could be altered.
