feat(virtualmodels): list context window and max output tokens for virtual models - #1139
Virtual models in /v1/models used to copy all metadata from their first available target. They now list context_window and max_output_tokens as the smallest value any target reports (descending chained virtual models), so clients that size prompts from model metadata never overflow whichever target serves the request.
Operators can set either limit explicitly on a virtual model (config.yaml, VIRTUAL_MODELS, admin API, dashboard editor); an explicit value wins per field.
Stored in new nullable SQL columns (with migrations) and MongoDB fields; access policies reject these fields.
Listing metadata only; requests are not limited by these values.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Virtual-model redirects can specify context-window and maximum-output-token limits, which are shown in /v1/models. When omitted, each limit is derived from the smallest value reported by eligible targets.
Configure limits in the dashboard, configuration files, or API requests. Access policies do not support these settings.
Documentation
Added guidance on configuring token limits and how values are derived and displayed. These reported limits do not guarantee that requests will fit every target.
Virtual-model redirects now support optional context_window and max_output_tokens limits. The backend validates and persists these values, then exposes them in /v1/models. Omitted limits are derived from the smallest positive value reported across targets, including enabled chained redirects. The dashboard can configure both fields.
Virtual-model types, configuration, and upsert requests now include optional context_window and max_output_tokens fields. Redirect values must be positive. Access policies reject either field. API schemas and configuration documentation describe the fields and their defaults.
Configuration and persistence wiring internal/virtualmodels/config.go, internal/virtualmodels/config_overlay_test.go, internal/virtualmodels/store_mongodb.go, internal/virtualmodels/store_sql.go, internal/virtualmodels/service.go, internal/virtualmodels/store_test.go
Configuration conversion and admin views carry both limits. MongoDB documents and SQL rows store and restore them. Store tests check redirect round trips and nil policy values.
Resolve limits for model listings internal/virtualmodels/token_limits.go, internal/virtualmodels/resolve.go, internal/virtualmodels/token_limits_test.go, docs/features/virtual-models.mdx
Model listings use explicit redirect limits when configured and otherwise derive each limit from the smallest positive value across targets. Enabled chained redirects contribute values; disabled chains do not. Tests cover overrides, missing metadata, chained targets, and unchanged catalog metadata.
Dashboard editing and payloads web/dashboard/src/pages/models/VirtualModelEditor.svelte, web/dashboard/src/pages/models/routing.js, web/dashboard/src/pages/models/virtualModelEditor.svelte.js, web/dashboard/src/pages/models/vmForm.js, web/dashboard/messages/*.json, web/dashboard/tests/models-virtual-models.test.js
The redirect editor displays both fields and loads saved values. Save and toggle payloads include finite configured values and omit empty values. Translations and tests cover the new fields.
Clients relying on the API schema can submit token limits that the server rejects. Align the schema with validation; the earlier listing and guidance concerns appear addressed.

A rabbit checks the limits twice, Then hops through fields of numbers nice. Smallest targets guide the way, Chained redirects join the play. The model list shows what they say.

[Medium risk] Adds token limit metadata to virtual model configuration.
The PR should not merge until the listed limits stop promising that requests fit targets whose limits are unknown.

Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win
Require positive token limits in the request schema.
The schema accepts zero and negative values for both fields, but validateTokenLimits rejects them. A client can therefore send a schema-valid request that receives a validation error. Add minimum: 1 to both request fields. Update the request annotations and regenerate docs/openapi.json and cmd/gomodel/docs/docs.go.
