codex Custom Prompts Deprecated. Use skills for reusable prompts #589
Custom slash commands have been merged into skills. A file at .claude/commands/review.md and a skill at .claude/skills/review/SKILL.md both create /review and work the same way. Your existing .claude/commands/ files keep working. Skills add optional features: a directory for supporting files, frontmatter to control whether you or Claude invokes them, and the ability for Claude to load them automatically when relevant.
Both OpenSpec skills & commands' description are loaded into the context window, and it's quite wasteful.
Closing as done by #1283: the Codex integration is now skills-only, and the managed custom prompts were retired exactly as this issue recommended. openspec init --tools codex generates skills under .codex/skills/ and no prompt files at all, and openspec update cleans up legacy prompts (verified on current main).
The migration this issue called for has been completed. On main, ships with the next release.
