Status: LGTM. A small guard for the unpatched braces advisory (Dependabot #112, GHSA-vfj7-8cjw-p6xm).

Proof

  • The crash is real. With the braces@3.0.3 that fast-glob uses here, fast-glob throws RangeError: Maximum call stack size exceeded on a pattern nested 4,990 levels deep.
  • CLI before and after. A schema whose generates uses that pattern, with openspec status:
    • main: fails with ENAMETOOLONG, because macOS's path limit happens to fire before braces. Nothing guarantees that ordering on every platform.
    • This PR: fails with Artifact output pattern nests braces more than 16 levels deep: {{{{…, and the error quotes only the first 80 characters.
  • Tests. The new tests cover 16 levels (allowed), 17 (rejected), 4,000 (rejected before any filesystem error), and the parser edge cases (brackets, quotes, parentheses). Without the guard, 5 of them fail. Full suite: 6,426 passed; the 10 failures also fail on main in this sandbox.

What this changes

  • A glob in generates or apply.tracks that nests braces or parentheses more than 16 levels deep is rejected before glob matching. Real patterns use one or two levels, and every built-in schema uses none.
  • resolveArtifactOutputs is the only path from user input to fast-glob, so one check covers both fields.
  • Each user-facing surface is updated: the docs (docs-lab/reference/schemas/schema-yaml.md), the artifact-graph spec, a patch changeset, and the error message itself.
  • The pnpm audit exception stays, since braces has no patched release, and its risk note now describes the guard.

Notes

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Artifact output patterns with more than 16 levels of brace or parenthesis nesting are now rejected before glob matching, with an error identifying the limit.
    • Patterns nested up to 16 levels remain supported; bracket classes and quoted text do not count toward the limit.
  • Documentation

    • Documented the nesting limit for generates and apply.tracks patterns.

braces <=3.0.3 (GHSA-vfj7-8cjw-p6xm, no patched release) can exhaust the
stack on deeply nested patterns, and schema `generates` / `apply.tracks`
globs reach it through fast-glob. Reject glob patterns nested more than 16
levels before any path or glob work, document the limit in docs-lab, add it
to the artifact-graph spec, and update the pnpm audit exception note.

📝 Walkthrough

Artifact output resolution now rejects glob patterns with brace or parenthesis nesting deeper than 16 before glob matching. The artifact graph requirements, schema documentation, tests, changeset, and audit comment describe or validate this limit.

Changes: Artifact pattern guard

Layer / File(s) Summary
Specify the nesting limit
openspec/specs/artifact-graph/spec.md, docs-lab/reference/schemas/schema-yaml.md
The artifact graph requirement and schema documentation specify that glob patterns with brace or parenthesis nesting deeper than 16 fail before glob matching.
Enforce and test the nesting limit
src/core/artifact-graph/outputs.ts, test/core/artifact-graph/outputs.test.ts, .changeset/braces-nesting-guard.md, pnpm-workspace.yaml
resolveArtifactOutputs checks glob patterns for excessive brace or parenthesis nesting. Tests cover depth 16 and depths above the limit, including a 4,000-level pattern, and verify that glob task generation does not run for rejected patterns. Errors truncate patterns longer than 80 characters. The changeset and audit comment describe the guard.

The new nesting limit may not take effect fast enough on deeply nested schema values. The input may stall openspec status before the guard error appears. Check the classification order before merging.

Comment thread src/core/artifact-graph/outputs.ts
The guard decremented on every `}` and ignored parentheses, but braces
treats `[...]` and quoted runs as literal and nests `(` groups in the
same tree it walks recursively. So `*{a,[}]...`, `*{a,"}"...`,
`*{a,(}...` and `*{a,b}((((...))))` passed the 16-level guard and still
nested arbitrarily deep inside braces. Mirror the parser's block stack
instead, with tests for each bypass.

Also:
- Move the limit into its own requirement, so it no longer lengthens the
State Detection requirement (which is already over the 500-char strict
warning on main), and name apply.tracks too.
- Reword the changeset: the guard stops the stack overflow from the
advisory; it does not stop every malformed schema from crashing (wide
sibling brace groups can still exhaust memory, a separate issue).

Reject deep brace candidates before quadratic glob classification.

If a pattern has thousands of nested braces but a comma only in the outermost group, isGlobPattern() calls hasBraceExpansion() before this guard. That helper scans progressively larger slices for each closing brace. A deeply nested schema value can therefore stall openspec status before the new 16-level error appears. Make detection linear or add a cheap depth check that preserves literal filenames. The existing classification order and slice operation are visible in the source. (raw.githubusercontent.com).

LGTM from the hardening pass. Reviewed the depth guard against the braces parser behavior and the fast-glob boundary. The focused artifact-graph suite (79 tests), lint, build, security scans, and full cross-platform CI pass. GitHub does not allow authors to approve their own PR.

A pattern deep enough to hit the guard can run to thousands of
characters, and the error printed all of it.

Reviewed the fast-glob boundary, nesting guard, parser edge cases, tests, spec, and canonical schema documentation. The guard is appropriately early and scoped, and CI is green. The docs-lab change still requires final review from @TabishB under the repository policy.
