fix(website): preview the built site without a server dependency - #2110
Conversation
`pnpm start` ran `serve`, a dev-only tool whose transitive tree kept publishing advisories into the docs site's graph. Four of them had to be pinned by hand in #2019 (brace-expansion x3, fast-uri) after the Security workflow went red on main, for code that never reached the published site. Replace it with a first-party static preview script, which has no tree to audit, and drop the three pins that existed only to patch serve's tree (brace-expansion, fast-uri, compression). The build-time pins (postcss, sharp, nanoid) stay. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

covering a symlink escape through the preview request path.
- Line 90: Handle filesystem races in the candidate lookup and read-stream

files and `404.html`. When a stream fails before response headers are sent,
return an error response; prevent unhandled stream errors from terminating the
preview process.

A bare absolute path is not a valid module specifier on Windows, so
`await import('D:\\a\\OpenSpec\\website\\scripts\\preview.mjs')` failed the suite
with `SyntaxError: Invalid or unexpected token` on windows-pwsh only. Route it
through `pathToFileURL`, and add the release changeset.

test/website-preview.test.ts failed to parse on windows-pwsh only, with `SyntaxError: Invalid or unexpected token`: - `preview.mjs` opened with `#!/usr/bin/env node`. The file is imported by the suite, and `#` is an unexpected token for any parser that does not strip it. The script is never executed directly - `pnpm start` runs `node scripts/preview.mjs` - and the file is not executable, so the shebang was decorative. - The suite imported it by a path built with `path.join`, which on Windows is `D:\\...`: not a module specifier. Use a literal relative specifier, so the runner resolves it the same way it resolves every other import here. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The preview server is not safe to approve at this head. Lexical containment still follows a symlink under out/ and can serve a file outside the export when HOST exposes the server. stat/read races can also throw or emit an unhandled stream error, and the traversal test writes and deletes a shared temp filename outside its unique fixture. Please address the existing unresolved threads and narrow the changeset's Cloudflare routing claim.
…read errors - A symlink under out/ that pointed outside it passed the lexical prefix check, and the file behind it was served. Each candidate is now checked again after resolving symlinks, against the resolved export directory; 404.html goes through the same lookup. - A file removed or made unreadable between lookup and streaming threw from statSync or emitted an unhandled stream error that killed the server. Lookup errors are a miss, and headers are sent only once the file is open, so a failed read gets a plain 500 (or 404 for 404.html) instead. - The traversal test wrote and deleted a fixed filename in the shared temp directory. The export now sits inside a per-run parent, so the outside file is unique to the run. - The changeset no longer claims Cloudflare routing: out/_redirects is not applied. The symlink-escape and unreadable-file tests fail against the previous preview.mjs and pass now. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.Handle an
EPERMfailure when creating the junction.The
fs.symlinkSync(outsideDir, ..., 'junction')call on Line 114 sits outside thetryblock. It also has no skip guard. On a platform that refuses the link, the test fails with an error instead of skipping. The comment says that a junction needs no privilege on Windows. That is true for Windows. On other platforms, the'junction'type is ignored, so a regular symlink is created. This is acceptable. Keep the current code if the CI matrix is Windows, macOS, and Linux only. Wrap the call in the same try-and-skip pattern aslinkFileif you want to support restricted environments.

Re-reviewed at 9d8d8d4. The preview now rejects lexical and symlink escapes, handles lookup and stream failures without crashing, keeps traversal fixtures inside a unique temporary parent, and no longer overstates redirect support. Focused preview and workspace tests pass: 18 tests.
Status: LGTM.
Hardens #2019 by removing what that PR had to patch.
What was wrong
#2019 pinned
brace-expansionandfast-uriin the docs site after four advisories turned the Security workflow red onmain. Every one of them came fromserve, a devDependency used by exactly one line:servebacked"start": "serve out"— a local preview of the static export — and is referenced nowhere else in the repo, CI, or docs. So the site carried a ~630-line slice of lockfile, and three standing advisory pins, for code that never reaches the published site. Each new advisory in that tree reddenedmainafter merge and needed a hand-written pin plus a lockfile regen; that has now happened repeatedly. The pins were the right call at the time. They just treat the symptom.
How it was fixed
website/scripts/preview.mjs— a dependency-free static server forout/, backingpnpm start. Routing matches what the export produces:/docs/cli,/docs/cli/and/docs/cli.htmlall resolve todocs/cli.html, a directory index wins where one exists, and a miss serves404.htmlwith status 404. Path traversal is rejected (..,%2e%2e, null bytes).servefromwebsite/package.json.brace-expansion,fast-uri,compression. The build-time pins (postcss, sharp, nanoid) stay — those are real.website/pnpm-lock.yaml(627 lines lighter). The root lockfile is untouched, so the Nix flake hash does not change.out/_redirectsis a Cloudflare feature and is not applied locally, exactly as before —servedid not honor it either.Proof it works
pnpm audit --dir website→ no known vulnerabilities, with three fewer pins than before.pnpm install --frozen-lockfile --ignore-scripts --dir websitepasses, so the Website Lockfile Drift job stays green.pnpm buildinwebsite/succeeds after the removal, and the preview serves the realout/:/200,/docs/cli200,/docs/cli/200,/robots.txt200 astext/plain,/nope404 from404.html.test/website-preview.test.ts(11 tests) covers route resolution, trailing slashes, directory indexes, content types, traversal refusal, and an end-to-end fetch against a fixture export.test/pnpm-workspace-config.test.tsgains a guard:startmust point at the committed script, and noserve/serve-handlermay reappear in the site's lockfile. Re-adding a server dependency is then a deliberate choice that updates the test.main(artifact-workflow,config-profile, 8 environmentalconfig-edit), verified in a cleanmainworktree.Notes / nits
website/README.mdalready describespnpm run startas "Serve the builtout/directory locally", which is still accurate; left as is.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
