fix(sandbox): stop concurrent reviews from evicting each other's checkouts - #1348
Conversation
…kouts Reviews that ran out their 10-minute pass on sandbox calls all overlapped other reviews of the same repository. One container serves a repository, and every clone ended by keeping the newest 3 directories, its glob including other clones' in-flight scratch directories. With six reviews at once, checkouts and running clones were deleted out from under them. A deleted checkout whose clone had succeeded then answered "call again" forever, so each tool call waited its full 90 s and gave up. - Eviction is least recently used (a ready checkout is touched on each use) and skips anything used in the last 15 minutes; scratch directories are only removed once that old. - A finished clone whose checkout is gone is cleared and cloned again. - One call into the sandbox Worker is capped at the command's wall clock plus 60 s and reported as unavailable past that (calls hung 4+ min before a 500). - Per turn and repository, sandbox tools are refused at once after the sandbox is unavailable or the checkout missed two waits, pointing the model at read_source_file and search_source_code.

- Line 48: Update the success path that checks result.isError so an in-flight
success cannot reset the breaker to UP after another call has marked it
unavailable; preserve the down state for the remainder of the turn.

- Line 293: Update the stale `.clone-*` cleanup in `find` so it cannot remove a
directory still used by an in-flight clone or checkout; use an ownership-process
check or an activity marker refreshed by active work before deleting. Do not
treat directory modification time alone as proof that the clone has finished.

- A sandbox call that started before the breaker tripped and succeeded after it reset the repository to up. Down is now final for the turn. - A clone's scratch directory is named after its script's PID, and eviction removes one only when that process is gone, instead of guessing from modification time.
Maple review🟢 Confidence 8/10 · likely safe to merge Stops concurrent reviews from evicting each other's checkouts: eviction is now LRU with a 15-minute grace window, an evicted-but-finished clone is re-cloned, sandbox Worker calls are capped, and a per-repository breaker refuses sandbox tools after the sandbox fails a turn. Sound to merge.

Main moved the sandbox Worker to Sandbox SDK 1.0 (#1349), which replaced the process registry with a per-commit state directory. Its status script already re-clones a finished clone whose checkout was pruned, so this branch's cleanupCompletedProcesses fix is dropped. The eviction fix is ported onto it: LRU with a grace window, a touch on every ready answer, and scratch directories removed only when their clone's PID is gone.
Maple review🟢 Confidence 8/10 · likely safe to merge Stops concurrent sandbox reviews from evicting each other: eviction now goes by last use with a 15-minute grace, a dead clone's scratch directory is pruned by pid, one Worker call is capped, and a per-turn breaker refuses a sandbox that already failed. Contained; safe to merge once the container image check runs.

Why reviews ended early
Reviews that hit the 10-minute pass limit with only 7 to 15 model calls spent nearly all of it inside sandbox tools. Every one overlapped other reviews of the same repository: six Maple reviews started within 25 s at 15:48 UTC today, and four superwall reviews overlapped between 12:50 and 13:05.
One container serves a repository per org, and each review checks out its own commit there. Every clone ended by keeping the newest 3 directories, and the glob also matched other clones' in-flight
.clone-*scratch directories. With more than 3 commits in flight:ensureCheckoutanswered "has just finished. Call again." forever, and each tool call waited its full 90 s. In prod theff890e76checkout probe failed every 2 s for ten minutes.Separately, calls into the sandbox Worker hung about 255 s before failing with
HTTP error! status: 500, so two calls used most of a pass.Changes
apps/sandbox/src/checkout.ts): least recently used, since a ready checkout is now touched on every use. Anything used in the last 15 minutes (SANDBOX_CHECKOUT_GRACE_MINUTES) is kept past the count, and a clone's scratch directory is named after its PID and removed only once that process is gone.CloudflareRepoSandbox): one call into the Worker is capped at the command's wall clock plus 60 s. Past that it is reported as the sandbox being unavailable.apps/ai/src/chat/sandbox-breaker.ts): for each repository, sandbox tools are refused at once after the sandbox reports unavailable, after the kickoff clone could not start, or after two missed clone waits. A success resets the count. The refusal points the model atread_source_fileandsearch_source_code, which worked in every failing run.Testing
apps/sandbox: 57 tests, plus new ones for the grace window, the touch, and re-cloning an evicted checkout. I also ran the generated prune lines in a shell against aged fixture directories: old ones were removed, recent ones and in-flight clones were kept, and the script exits 0.packages/backendsandbox: 24 tests, plus a hung Worker call reported as unavailable.apps/ai: new breaker tests plus the sandbox tool and run tests.bun run --cwd apps/sandbox verify:image, which needs Docker. The clone script changed, so it is worth running before merge. Not covered
Some failures on the
gpt-6.1-solorg are slow inference, not the sandbox: about 478 s across 7 calls. This PR doesn't change that.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
