Pagefile and RAM usage #141

Closed

Description

@rrrrrex

RTX 5060 Ti + Ryzen 5 5600 + 48 GB DDR4
Model: Qwen3.8-Flash-Next-GSQ-RCO-IQ2_XS

Task manager data:
Dedicated VRAM: 15/16 GB
Shared VRAM: 23/24 GB
RAM: 44/48 GB, but committed 64/72 GB

Details:
strata.exe takes 36 GB RAM, 15 GB VRAM, 23 GB shared VRAM = 74 GB total.

pagefile is ~25 GB, but resmon.exe shows only n-gram reads. Looks like engine reserves extra memory for nothing. Also i don't like VRAM+Shared VRAM values for IQ2_XS model, is it limit for model size, or VRAM+entire RAM?

    Nothing is wasted here:

    • The ~23 GB of "shared GPU memory" is the same RAM the experts sit in, pinned for the GPU. Windows counts it twice.
    • Windows also charges the card's VRAM against RAM + page file, which inflates "committed" without any paging (the page file is reserved, not used).
    • The model's experts (~35 GB for IQ2_XS) live in RAM and the GPU holds a copy of the most-used ones, so the limit is your RAM, not VRAM + RAM.

    Closing as answered; please reopen if you see real paging (disk reads of the page file) while it runs.
