fix(metrics): chart histogram metrics from their bucket distribution - #101244
DanielVisca wants to merge 3 commits into
Conversation
A histogram sample stores the cumulative observation sum in the scalar value column; the distribution lives in histogram_bounds/histogram_counts. The viewer defaulted histogram metrics to p95, which the backend computed over the scalar column — charting a percentile of ever-growing sums instead of the latency distribution, so the chart never lined up with traces. - Default histogram and exponential_histogram metrics to histogram_quantile (summary keeps p95; ingest stores quantile pairs for those, not buckets) - Map histogram_quantile to the saved MetricsQuery node and send the required quantile (0.95) on the REST payload - Offer "Histogram p95" in the aggregation dropdown - Reject histogram_quantile for summary-typed metrics server-side Verified end to end against seeded cumulative histogram rows: the old p95 payload returns the growing sums (e.g. 20.0, 41.0); the histogram_quantile payload returns the real p95 bound (0.5s). This section warns when comments are more than 3% of the code lines a PR adds, and alerts above 6%. Before agent-assisted PRs, the typical share was about 2%. Only full-line comments count. Docstrings, generated files, snapshots, migrations, and workflow files are left out.
Comments that restate the code, record how the change came about, or narrate the next line add noise for the next reader. Keep the comments that explain a reason the code cannot show, and remove the rest. See .agents/skills/writing-code-comments/SKILL.md for the house rules.

✅ Toolbar bundle — eager 2.34 MiB within budget
What the toolbar ships to customer pages, measured from the esbuild output (minified, post-tree-shake). The eager set is the entry plus everything statically imported from it — fetched before any feature runs; deferred chunks load lazily. The eager guardrail is 5.72 MiB. Each output file must also stay below 10 MB, where CloudFront stops compressing it. The module boundary is enforced separately by check-toolbar-graph.

Prompt To Fix All With AI### Issue 1
products/metrics/frontend/components/MetricsClauseRow.tsx:31
**Unsupported aggregation remains selectable**
`Histogram p95` is offered for every metric type, but the backend rejects it for summaries and cannot derive it from scalar gauge or sum rows. Selecting it for those metrics returns a 400 or an empty chart. Filter this option to histogram and exponential-histogram clauses, as the repository requires the UI to show only supported options.
### Issue 2
products/metrics/backend/metric_query_runner.py:421
**Missing type bypasses validation**
When a valid API or saved query omits `metricType`, this guard does not reject summary data and the histogram query applies no type filter. Summary quantile/value arrays can then be interpreted as bucket counts, producing the invalid results this validation is intended to prevent. Require an explicit histogram-compatible type or constrain `histogram_quantile` queries to histogram types.
### Issue 3
products/metrics/frontend/components/metricsViewerLogic.tsx:188
**Negative buckets produce wrong quantiles**
Defaulting exponential histograms to `histogram_quantile` produces incorrect results for valid distributions containing negative buckets. Ingest emits zero first and then negative buckets without sorting, while the quantile implementation assumes ascending bounds and interpolates between adjacent entries. Normalize or sort exponential bounds with their counts before making this aggregation the default.

… test queryPayload?.clauses is optional on the generated _MetricQueryBodyApi, so indexing it needs the optional chain. Fixes the Frontend typechecking failure. Generated-By: PostHog Desktop Task-Id: d6de9c52-50e7-4bda-9bde-3d873985b46a
Two review threads flagged that histogram_quantile was reachable for metric types that carry no bucket distribution: - Backend: an untyped request admitted summary rows (and scalar gauge/sum rows), whose quantile/value pairs would be read as bucket counts. Require metric_type to be histogram or exponential_histogram rather than only rejecting summary, and add a regression test for the untyped-against-summary case plus the other unsupported types. - Frontend: the "Histogram p95" option was offered for every metric type. Filter it to histogram and exponential-histogram clauses so the UI only shows supported aggregations. Generated-By: PostHog Desktop Task-Id: d6de9c52-50e7-4bda-9bde-3d873985b46a

Not approved — this change needs a human reviewer.
Re-add the stamphog label to request another review once you have addressed this.
Two of three independent-reviewer findings (untyped-request bypass, unfiltered UI option) are fixed in this diff, but Greptile's P1 finding that defaulting exponential-histogram metrics to the new quantile aggregation produces wrong results for distributions with negative buckets (unsorted bounds) is still unresolved and untouched by the diff — the underlying interpolation function still assumes ascending bounds with no normalization.
- Author wrote 73% of the modified lines and has 55 merged PRs in these paths (familiarity STRONG).
- 👍 on the PR from greptile-apps[bot].
- Unresolved Greptile P1 comment on metricsViewerLogic.tsx (exponential-histogram negative-bucket ordering) — the diff makes histogram_quantile the default for exponential_histogram metrics without sorting/normalizing bucket bounds first, so charts for those metrics can silently show wrong quantiles.

Problem
A user charting a histogram metric (e.g. server request duration) saw a line that grew without bound and never matched the latency visible in traces. Ingest stores a histogram sample's cumulative observation sum in the scalar
valuecolumn; the distribution lives inhistogram_bounds/histogram_counts. The Metrics viewer defaulted histogram metrics top95, which the backend computed over that scalar column — a percentile of ever-growing sums, not of the recorded values.Changes
histogram_quantile(p95), which interpolates from the bucket counts — the chart shows the actual latency distribution.histogram_quantileis now a selectable aggregation in the viewer ("Histogram p95") and survives "Save as insight" onto theMetricsQuerynode with its quantile.p95default — ingest stores quantile→value pairs for those, not buckets — and the backend now rejectshistogram_quantilefor summary-typed series instead of returning garbage. Why: raised as product feedback that the histogram "shows some kind of summed value of all the samples received" instead of a distribution.
How did you test this code?
histogram_quantileon summary metrics; fullproducts/metrics/backendsuite (382 tests) run locally against the sandbox ClickHouse — all pass.histogram_quantilefor histograms; new tests cover the URL-restore backfill and the saved-node round trip; fullproducts/metrics/frontendjest suite (310 tests) passes./api/projects/:id/metrics/query. The oldp95payload returned the growing sums (20.0, 41.0); thehistogram_quantilepayload returned 0.5 — the real p95 bound.Automatic notifications
