ref #1209

Bridgy Fed gives a site's bridged Bluesky account a handle like index.example.com.ap.brid.gy. It can switch it to example.com once the domain resolves to the account and the account DMs username example.com to the Bridgy Fed bot, but Ghost has no way to send that DM, so publishers were stuck on the default handle.

After the handle is confirmed, the service now claims the site's domain:

  • it serves the bridged account's DID at /.well-known/atproto-did, checks the domain serves it, and sends the username DM, reusing the "stop" DM code
  • it never claims a domain that already points at another atproto account via DNS or HTTPS (eg the publisher's own Bluesky account), and stops if DNS can't be checked - DNS takes precedence over HTTPS in handle resolution
  • sites on www. prefer the root domain, then fall back to the www. host
  • without the proxy route the domain is not_reachable and nothing changes, so this ships without proxy config changes
  • existing accounts are switched the next time their handle is confirmed
  • publishers can switch back to the default handle (or retry) via /v2/actions/bluesky/domain-handle
  • when a site moves to another domain, the old account stops serving its DID

Handle confirmation now looks the account up by DID instead of searching for an .ap.brid.gy handle, so it keeps working after the handle changes.

Bridgy Fed gives a site's bridged Bluesky account a handle like
`index.example.com.ap.brid.gy`. It can switch it to `example.com` once the
domain resolves to the account and the account DMs `username example.com` to
the Bridgy Fed bot, but Ghost has no way to send that DM, so publishers were
stuck on the default handle.

After the handle is confirmed, the service now claims the site's domain:

- it serves the bridged account's DID at `/.well-known/atproto-did`, checks
the domain serves it, and sends the `username` DM, reusing the "stop" DM code
- it never claims a domain that already points at another atproto account via
DNS or HTTPS (eg the publisher's own Bluesky account), and stops if DNS can't
be checked - DNS takes precedence over HTTPS in handle resolution
- sites on `www.` prefer the root domain, then fall back to the `www.` host
- without the proxy route the domain is `not_reachable` and nothing changes,
so this ships without proxy config changes
- existing accounts are switched the next time their handle is confirmed
- publishers can switch back to the default handle (or retry) via
  `/v2/actions/bluesky/domain-handle`
- when a site moves to another domain, the old account stops serving its DID

Handle confirmation now looks the account up by DID instead of searching for an
`.ap.brid.gy` handle, so it keeps working after the handle changes.

Walkthrough

The change adds persisted domain-handle state and workflows that resolve bridged Bluesky identities, validate domain ownership through DNS and HTTPS, and request handle changes through Bridgy Fed. It adds API responses and operations for viewing, retrying, and opting out of domain handles. A new well-known route serves the DID during eligible claim states, with proxy configuration for development and Nginx.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 7c5d9

The previously reported risk of serving another site’s DID is addressed. No merge-blocking issue remains from this review.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 7c5d9

Concurrent handle changes or interrupted opt-out operations can leave the published identity inconsistent with the publisher’s choice. Administrative restrictions and conditional database updates limit exposure, but they do not coordinate the remote handle change with local state.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new lifecycle does not coordinate remote username commands with persisted serving authority. After entering claiming, an operation can pause while opt-out sends the default command and persists opted_out, then resume and send the domain command. Conversely, interruption after the default command but before persistence can leave an active row serving the DID. Database compare-and-set guards protect several transitions but not these external side effects, and settled states are not automatically reconciled. The resulting remote state depends on Bridgy Fed processing; no cross-account authority gain is established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated lifecycle inconsistency concerns the affected publisher’s bridged identity and domain proof. The mutation entrypoints require administrative roles and operate on the contextual account; the inspected path does not establish authority over another publisher. Resolver traffic executes from the shared service network, whose production private-network reachability remains unknown.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An overlapping authorized claim and opt-out can submit contradictory username commands after local revocation. A process interruption or persistence failure after the default command can instead preserve DID-serving authority. These are new identity-lifecycle failure paths; remote processing semantics and an exploitable cross-tenant outcome are not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The DID endpoint permits anonymous reads, while administrative mutations enforce role metadata through the route registry. Role verification uses the requested host’s signing keys, and account loading is scoped by site host.
  • observed — The resolver validates every HTTPS hop, limits redirects, and permits the private-address bypass only in local environments. The inspected validator checks resolved addresses but returns no transport binding; fetch is invoked separately. This leaves connection-time rebinding protection unestablished, not a verified SSRF exploit. DNS errors other than no-record responses abort claiming.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Recovery is incomplete when local serving authority and remote identity diverge: confirmation returns settled active or opted_out rows without refreshing them, and repeating opt-out from opted_out sends no corrective command. Normal successful opt-out is covered, but it does not demonstrate recovery from external-command/persistence splits.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Represent desired handle changes durably, coordinate per-account command ordering, and reconcile remote identity against the latest desired state. Revocation should survive interruption and suppress stale claim commands rather than depend solely on database transition guards.
  • proposed — Bind public-address validation to the actual connection for each redirect, or establish equivalent production egress enforcement. Verify transport behavior under changing DNS answers while retaining TLS verification.

getDomainHandleDid so counterpart lookups only return a DID when the stored
domain_handle matches the requested host, while the primary lookup remains
unrestricted. Preserve iteration to allow a valid counterpart when the primary
root row is released, and add regression coverage for an unrelated counterpart
and a released primary root row.

Review comments at @src/integration/atproto-handle.resolver.ts:
- Around line 65-73: Update resolveHttps to handle redirects manually with a
bounded number of hops, validating every redirect target before requesting it:
require HTTPS and reject hosts resolving to private, loopback, link-local,

null-on-failure behavior.

Review comments at @src/integration/bluesky.service.ts:

including unavailable and opted_out retry states, through
confirmHandleForAccount and claimDomainHandle to tryDomainHandle; condition the
claiming update on that expected status, including null status. If the
conditional update affects no row, stop before sending the claim. In
tryDomainHandle, guard both cleanup updates with status claiming and the exact
claimedAt timestamp created for that claim.
- Around line 563-592: Update the HTTPS conflict check in tryDomainHandle so it
returns taken for a different HTTPS DID only when dnsDids is empty; when DNS
provides the account DID, let DNS take precedence and continue the existing
flow.

Review comments at @src/site/site.service.ts:
- Around line 71-84: Update claimDomainHandle and checkDomainHandleClaim to
carry a site-ownership or operation-generation value through their asynchronous
work and require it to remain current when writing claiming or active,
preventing stale operations from restoring a released handle. In the release
transaction, invalidate that value for the old owner; keep retries valid for the
current site owner.

Addresses review feedback on the domain handle claims:

- `/.well-known/atproto-did` lookups only follow redirects to HTTPS URLs on
public addresses, like the service's other outgoing requests, since the
domain is set by whoever runs the site
- a DNS record for the account now wins over a different DID served over
HTTPS, as it does in atproto handle resolution
- claim, cleanup and confirmation writes only apply if the domain handle is
still in the state they started from, so overlapping confirmations can't
claim twice or undo each other
- a site moving to another domain releases its old account's domain handle
whatever its status, so a claim in progress for it is dropped
- the root/`www.` fallback only serves the other site's DID if it claimed the
requested domain, so it can't make a sibling site's claim look `taken`
