Sometimes you want to only ping people who are part of both roles only. This command should generate and assign a temporary role that is the intersection, which can be pinged in announcements.
I'm unsure of a use case for this that doesn't cause more overhead versus pinging a few people individually worst case. Could you give more details on thoughts you had with this?
I think the idea came from someone else, I can't remember. I think the idea was to be able to ping e.g. academic 1st years only, instead of the whole lot. I agree it's probably not worth the effort, but was raised as an idea to target pings more precisely
