Edition metadata can outgrow the bounded catalog root as more datasets and years are added. An explicit metadata-v4 format keeps the root small and loads SHA-verified metadata for only the requested editions through the existing DatasetCatalog and DataRelease APIs. Native field identities, source contracts, receipts and artifact dependency closure remain intact; current default writers are unchanged pending real-data migration qualification.
The final revision passed local Ruff, ty, deptry and pytest on Python 3.14.10 and 3.15.2: 1,149 tests passed and one optional PostgreSQL test skipped on each runtime. Independent adversarial review covers the final committed revision. Real-cohort migration and downstream resource qualification remain pending; this draft does not publish snapshots or change production.
