Solved: mpv-handler:// links trigger "No Apps Available" in browser (Ubuntu/Debian) #122

Closed

Description

@muse90673

Environment:

  • OS: Ubuntu 26.04 / Debian 13.5 (both are running in VirtualBox)
  • Browsers: Chrome, Firefox

Issue Description:
I followed the Linux installation steps in the README and executed all commands. However, when trying to launch MPV from Chrome and Firefox via window.open(url, "_self");, a "No Apps Available" dialog pops up. Interestingly, running xdg-open directly from the terminal works perfectly fine.

Solution:
After some troubleshooting, I found the fix. It turns out the desktop database needs a manual refresh after registering the xdg-mime.

Running the following command resolves the issue:

update-desktop-database $HOME/.local/share/applications

After a system reboot, the browser can open MPV successfully. This fix has been tested and verified on both Chrome and Firefox (Ubuntu 26.04 and Debian 13.5).

    Thanks for testing. Normally, xdg-mime default should be sufficient.
    However, I will still add this step to the README to prevent issues like the one you encountered.
    Thanks.
