[Feature] CldVideoPlayer should support Asset-Saved Settings #663
Cloudinary has an enterprise customer who would like to use asset-saved settings with the next-cloudinary library. Specifically they would like to use custom posters, set in the video player studio.
Hi @eportis-cloudinary , I’d like to work on this issue. I really enjoyed contributing to Cloudinary last time, and it was a great experience. I’ll take this one up and work on implementing support for Asset-Saved Settings in next-cloudinary.
Hi @Zaki-Mohd, thanks for offering to help, great to have you back!
Before this can be implemented, we need to upgrade the Cloudinary Video Player from its current version (1.11.1) to v3.6+, which is when Asset-Saved Settings were introduced. That upgrade is a significant jump and is being planned separately. Once it lands, the async initialization changes Eric describes would be the next step.
I'll update this issue when the player upgrade is ready so you know when to jump in.
I tested this with the player upgrade from #665 (Cloudinary Video Player 4.1.2), using a video with a custom poster saved in the Video Player Studio.
Custom posters work in CldVideoPlayer once #665 is released, with no other code changes. Player v4 loads posters through Cloudinary's poster service, which applies the poster saved on the video. With the current player (1.11.1), the same video shows its first frame instead.
Other saved settings (for example colors or controls) will not be applied yet. Only cloudinary.player() fetches the full saved configuration, and CldVideoPlayer creates the player with cloudinary.videoPlayer(). Supporting those would need the asynchronous initialization change described above.
So the custom poster use case is covered by v7. @Zaki-Mohd, if you'd still like to work on this, the remaining part is switching CldVideoPlayer to cloudinary.player() so all saved settings apply. Please hold off for now: cloudinary.player() only exists in the new player, which isn't merged yet (#665). Once it's in, I'll let you know here, and the pull request should target the beta branch, since that's where the player upgrade lives.
