Lifespan of the "splashed" graph #86

Open

Description

@ruthhoffmann

Maybe not an issue but more of a food-for-thought (and something to add into the manual/documentation).

Currently when a graph is visualised using Splash the PDF-file that is generated outlives the GAP session it was generated in. It might be worth thinking if that is the right way of doing it? Maybe it should only live while the GAP session is open and then be closed after? (Although as @fingolfin pointed out since it's opened in a Previewer then closing that window will be hard if not impossible).

Further, something that definitely needs to go into the documentation where is the generated PDF saved?

    Found where the graphs get stored. For info on a Mac that is

    /var/folders/7z/ptq39y1s2wd0t_40t4c_8pgr0000gp/T//gaptempdirjhScVY

    The first 3 folders hashes are generated by MacOS (I believe). The last (after T) is generated by GAP. The mystery is that this folder doesn't exist. Just for fun I checked all the gaptempdir* in T that exist... All are empty.

    So that is slight mystery. 😄

    Would one resolution be to update Splash to accept a filename? And to possibly print the location of any written files as an Info statement? The filename you've written is almost certainly that produced by DirectoryTemporary, the doc for which says:

    GAP will make a reasonable effort to remove this directory upon termination of the GAP job that created the directory.

    Yes that makes more sense.

    Looks like this options already exists (thanks 2024-James!).

    Line 55 in splash.gi could do with a -p flag so that mkdir doesn't complain if you're wanting to create a file in the current directory.

    I think this is now resolved, can we close?

    Happy to close unless you still want to discuss (or have an idea for) the "lifespan" of the splashed graphs beyond the GAP session?
