ROADMAP Item

#27 dpdk-stdlib-tcp: Sync socket — engine loop and DpdkTcpStream

Spec: .kiro/specs/tcp-support/ · tasks 8.1, 8.2, 8.3

Changes

engine_loop (task 8.2)

  • Selects on rx_readiness | engine_wakeup | timer deadline
  • Dispatches: parse_tcp_packet → on_segment, cmd_rx.try_recv() → on_command, on_tick(clock.now())
  • Handles all three RxReadiness variants (Condvar/PollOnly/Fd)
  • Sends outbound frames via backend.send_frame

connect_v4 + connect_timeout (task 8.1)

  • Resolves dst_mac via NeighborResolver.resolve()
  • Creates ConnectionHandle with SPSC rings
  • Sends EngineCommand::Connect with resolved MACs
  • Parks on oneshot until handshake completes or error
  • connect_timeout uses recv_timeout for bounded wait

DpdkTcpStream (task 8.3)

  • io::Read with P0-B recheck-under-lock pattern (check error → try rx_ring.read → check eof → lock notify_lock → recheck → condvar.wait)
  • io::Write with push to tx_ring, signal engine_wakeup, block if full
  • Honors set_nonblocking (→ WouldBlock) and read_timeout/write_timeout (condvar.wait_timeout → TimedOut)
  • Drop → decrement app_refcount → send Close on last handle

Supporting changes

  • Added clock() and next_timer_deadline() to TcpEngine
  • Added wakeup() accessor to CommandSender

Tests Added

12 new unit tests covering:

  • Nonblocking read/write (WouldBlock)
  • Data delivery from rx_ring
  • EOF flag detection
  • Sticky error propagation
  • Write pushes to tx_ring
  • Read timeout expiry
  • Blocking read wakes on data (threaded)
  • Drop sends Close command
  • connect_v4 resolves MAC and sends command
  • connect_timeout returns TimedOut

Validation

  • cargo build && cargo test: all 1007 workspace tests pass
  • Zero warnings in new code (only pre-existing warnings in upstream dpdk-stdlib)

Implement tasks 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 from .kiro/specs/tcp-support/:

- engine_loop(backend, engine, cmd_rx, wakeup): select on
  rx_readiness | engine_wakeup | timer_deadline; dispatch
  parse_tcp_packet→on_segment, cmd_rx→on_command, on_tick;
  send outbound frames via backend.send_frame.

- connect_v4 + connect_timeout: resolve dst_mac via
  NeighborResolver, create ConnectionHandle, send
  EngineCommand::Connect, park on oneshot response.

- DpdkTcpStream: io::Read with P0-B recheck-under-lock,
  io::Write with push to tx_ring + signal engine_wakeup +
  block if full, honor set_nonblocking (WouldBlock) and
  read/write timeouts (condvar.wait_timeout), Drop sends
  Close on last handle.

Also adds clock() and next_timer_deadline() to TcpEngine,
and wakeup() accessor to CommandSender.

Synthetic UDP Performance Results

Measures framework overhead: sync dpdk_udp::UdpSocket vs async (std::sync::Mutex + try_recv_from).

IPv4 Baseline

Test Payload Sync PPS Async PPS Ratio (sync/async) Async ns/op
TX send_to 64B 11.8M 11.3M 1.1x 88
RX recv_from 64B 3.7M 4.9M 0.7x 204
TX send_to 1400B 1.8M 1.8M 1.0x 552
RX recv_from 1400B 1.2M 1.3M 0.9x 775

IPv6

Test Payload Sync PPS Async PPS Ratio (sync/async) Async ns/op
TX send_to (IPv6) 64B 8.9M 9.0M 1.0x 111
RX recv_from (IPv6) 64B 4.1M 5.6M 0.7x 177
TX send_to (IPv6) 1400B 2.9M 2.9M 1.0x 345
RX recv_from (IPv6) 1400B 1.1M 1.3M 0.9x 798

IPv6 vs IPv4 Comparison (sync path)

Test Payload IPv4 PPS IPv6 PPS IPv4/IPv6 Ratio
TX send_to (sync) 64B 11.8M 8.9M 1.33x
RX recv_from (sync) 64B 3.7M 4.1M 0.89x
TX send_to (sync) 1400B 1.8M 2.9M 0.63x
RX recv_from (sync) 1400B 1.2M 1.1M 1.01x

IPv4 avg sync/async ratio: 0.9x, worst: 1.1x | IPv6 vs IPv4 worst ratio: 1.33x (OK)

OK: IPv6 is 32.6% slower than IPv4 — within acceptable threshold (<50%). Expected due to larger headers (40B vs 20B) and mandatory UDP checksum.

Good: Async wrapper is within 1.1x of sync — minimal framework overhead.

NIC Drops Instrumentation Self-Check

Compares (NIC-FINAL − NIC-BASELINE) one-shot snapshots against the sum of per-tick [PERF] deltas over the reporter's lifetime. These MUST match exactly — a mismatch means per-tick delta bookkeeping is losing data.

Config Status imissed (expected / actual / Δ) ierrors (expected / actual / Δ) rx_nombuf (expected / actual / Δ)
native-dpdk no instrumentation — — —
rust-dpdk OK 0 / 0 / 0 420,477 / 420,477 / 0 0 / 0 / 0
tokio-dpdk OK 0 / 0 / 0 275,054 / 275,054 / 0 0 / 0 / 0
plain-rust no instrumentation — — —

expected = FINAL − BASELINE (raw NIC counter delta across reporter lifetime). actual = sum of per-tick [PERF] delta fields. Any Δ ≠ 0 is a bug in the tick loop's bookkeeping.

plain-rust Kernel NIC Drops (ethtool -S delta)

ethtool snapshots not available — baseline or final file missing in $LOGS_DIR/dut-plain-rust-ethtool-*.txt.

Synthetic UDP Performance Results

Measures framework overhead: sync dpdk_udp::UdpSocket vs async (std::sync::Mutex + try_recv_from).

IPv4 Baseline

Test Payload Sync PPS Async PPS Ratio (sync/async) Async ns/op
TX send_to 64B 11.8M 11.3M 1.0x 88
RX recv_from 64B 3.6M 4.8M 0.8x 208
TX send_to 1400B 1.8M 1.8M 1.0x 558
RX recv_from 1400B 1.1M 1.2M 0.9x 823

IPv6

Test Payload Sync PPS Async PPS Ratio (sync/async) Async ns/op
TX send_to (IPv6) 64B 8.9M 8.9M 1.0x 112
RX recv_from (IPv6) 64B 4.1M 5.6M 0.7x 177
TX send_to (IPv6) 1400B 2.9M 2.9M 1.0x 346
RX recv_from (IPv6) 1400B 1.1M 1.2M 0.9x 823

IPv6 vs IPv4 Comparison (sync path)

Test Payload IPv4 PPS IPv6 PPS IPv4/IPv6 Ratio
TX send_to (sync) 64B 11.8M 8.9M 1.33x
RX recv_from (sync) 64B 3.6M 4.1M 0.89x
TX send_to (sync) 1400B 1.8M 2.9M 0.63x
RX recv_from (sync) 1400B 1.1M 1.1M 0.99x

IPv4 avg sync/async ratio: 0.9x, worst: 1.0x | IPv6 vs IPv4 worst ratio: 1.33x (OK)

OK: IPv6 is 33.1% slower than IPv4 — within acceptable threshold (<50%). Expected due to larger headers (40B vs 20B) and mandatory UDP checksum.

Good: Async wrapper is within 1.0x of sync — minimal framework overhead.
