ROADMAP Item

#28: dpdk-stdlib-tcp: Sync socket — TcpStream and TcpListener public API
Spec: .kiro/specs/tcp-support/ · tasks 8.4, 8.5

Changes

TcpStream (tcp_stream.rs)

  • enum Inner { Dpdk(DpdkTcpStream), Std(std::net::TcpStream) } with v4→DPDK / v6→kernel dispatch
  • Full std::net::TcpStream surface: connect, connect_timeout, shutdown, peer_addr, local_addr, set_read_timeout/set_write_timeout, set_nodelay/nodelay, set_ttl/ttl, set_linger/linger, set_nonblocking, take_error, peek, try_clone (returns Unsupported on DPDK arm)
  • impl Read/Write for TcpStream and impl Read/Write for &TcpStream (serialized via read_mutex/write_mutex per P0-C)
  • Process-wide TcpContext + init_tcp_context() for engine bootstrapping

TcpListener (tcp_listener.rs)

  • enum Inner { Dpdk(DpdkTcpListener), Std(std::net::TcpListener) }
  • bind<A: ToSocketAddrs> with v4/v6 dispatch
  • accept() -> (TcpStream, SocketAddr)
  • local_addr(), set_ttl(), ttl(), incoming() -> Incoming

SpscByteRing (ring.rs)

  • Added peek(&self, buf: &mut [u8]) -> usize for non-destructive read (used by TcpStream::peek)

Tests Added

  • tcp_stream_try_clone_dpdk_returns_unsupported
  • tcp_stream_peer_addr_and_local_addr
  • tcp_stream_shutdown_sends_command
  • tcp_stream_set_linger_updates_handle
  • tcp_stream_take_error_returns_none_initially
  • tcp_stream_take_error_returns_latched_error
  • tcp_stream_read_write_dpdk
  • tcp_stream_try_clone_std_works (v6 dispatch path)
  • TcpListener bind tests (v4 without context, v6 fallback)

Tradeoffs

  • set_linger/linger on the Std (kernel) arm is a no-op since tcp_linger is unstable in std
  • try_clone() on DPDK arm returns Unsupported — documented divergence; into_split() is the intended concurrent pattern for SPSC
  • peek() on DPDK arm returns WouldBlock when ring is empty (in blocking mode, full blocking peek would require additional condvar wait logic)

All 666+ existing tests pass locally (cargo build && cargo test).

Implement ROADMAP item #28 (tasks 8.4, 8.5):

- TcpStream: enum Inner { Dpdk(DpdkTcpStream), Std(std::net::TcpStream) }
  - connect<A: ToSocketAddrs> with v4→DPDK / v6→kernel dispatch
  - connect_timeout, shutdown, peer_addr, local_addr
  - set_read_timeout, set_write_timeout, read_timeout, write_timeout
  - set_nodelay, nodelay, set_ttl, ttl, set_linger, linger
  - set_nonblocking, take_error, peek, try_clone (Unsupported on DPDK)
  - impl Read/Write for TcpStream and for &TcpStream (serialized via mutex)
- TcpListener: enum Inner { Dpdk, Std }
  - bind<A: ToSocketAddrs> with v4/v6 dispatch
  - accept() -> (TcpStream, SocketAddr)
  - local_addr, set_ttl, ttl, incoming() -> Incoming iterator
- SpscByteRing: add peek() method for non-destructive read
- TcpContext + init_tcp_context() for process-wide DPDK engine context

Synthetic UDP Performance Results

Measures framework overhead: sync dpdk_udp::UdpSocket vs async (std::sync::Mutex + try_recv_from).

IPv4 Baseline

Test Payload Sync PPS Async PPS Ratio (sync/async) Async ns/op
TX send_to 64B 11.4M 11.0M 1.0x 91
RX recv_from 64B 3.4M 3.9M 0.9x 253
TX send_to 1400B 1.6M 1.6M 1.0x 611
RX recv_from 1400B 902.5K 1.1M 0.9x 946

IPv6

Test Payload Sync PPS Async PPS Ratio (sync/async) Async ns/op
TX send_to (IPv6) 64B 8.5M 8.4M 1.0x 119
RX recv_from (IPv6) 64B 3.9M 5.5M 0.7x 183
TX send_to (IPv6) 1400B 2.7M 2.6M 1.0x 380
RX recv_from (IPv6) 1400B 1.0M 1.1M 1.0x 948

IPv6 vs IPv4 Comparison (sync path)

Test Payload IPv4 PPS IPv6 PPS IPv4/IPv6 Ratio
TX send_to (sync) 64B 11.4M 8.5M 1.34x
RX recv_from (sync) 64B 3.4M 3.9M 0.86x
TX send_to (sync) 1400B 1.6M 2.7M 0.62x
RX recv_from (sync) 1400B 902.5K 1.0M 0.89x

IPv4 avg sync/async ratio: 0.9x, worst: 1.0x | IPv6 vs IPv4 worst ratio: 1.34x (OK)

OK: IPv6 is 33.8% slower than IPv4 — within acceptable threshold (<50%). Expected due to larger headers (40B vs 20B) and mandatory UDP checksum.

Good: Async wrapper is within 1.0x of sync — minimal framework overhead.

NIC Drops Instrumentation Self-Check

Compares (NIC-FINAL − NIC-BASELINE) one-shot snapshots against the sum of per-tick [PERF] deltas over the reporter's lifetime. These MUST match exactly — a mismatch means per-tick delta bookkeeping is losing data.

Config Status imissed (expected / actual / Δ) ierrors (expected / actual / Δ) rx_nombuf (expected / actual / Δ)
native-dpdk no instrumentation — — —
rust-dpdk OK 0 / 0 / 0 403,622 / 403,622 / 0 0 / 0 / 0
tokio-dpdk OK 0 / 0 / 0 269,922 / 269,922 / 0 0 / 0 / 0
plain-rust no instrumentation — — —

expected = FINAL − BASELINE (raw NIC counter delta across reporter lifetime). actual = sum of per-tick [PERF] delta fields. Any Δ ≠ 0 is a bug in the tick loop's bookkeeping.

plain-rust Kernel NIC Drops (ethtool -S delta)

ethtool snapshots not available — baseline or final file missing in $LOGS_DIR/dut-plain-rust-ethtool-*.txt.

Synthetic UDP Performance Results

Measures framework overhead: sync dpdk_udp::UdpSocket vs async (std::sync::Mutex + try_recv_from).

IPv4 Baseline

Test Payload Sync PPS Async PPS Ratio (sync/async) Async ns/op
TX send_to 64B 11.4M 11.0M 1.0x 91
RX recv_from 64B 3.4M 4.6M 0.7x 216
TX send_to 1400B 1.6M 1.6M 1.0x 613
RX recv_from 1400B 990.1K 1.1M 0.9x 919

IPv6

Test Payload Sync PPS Async PPS Ratio (sync/async) Async ns/op
TX send_to (IPv6) 64B 8.6M 8.3M 1.0x 119
RX recv_from (IPv6) 64B 3.9M 5.4M 0.7x 183
TX send_to (IPv6) 1400B 2.6M 2.7M 1.0x 376
RX recv_from (IPv6) 1400B 1.0M 1.1M 0.9x 911

IPv6 vs IPv4 Comparison (sync path)

Test Payload IPv4 PPS IPv6 PPS IPv4/IPv6 Ratio
TX send_to (sync) 64B 11.4M 8.6M 1.31x
RX recv_from (sync) 64B 3.4M 3.9M 0.88x
TX send_to (sync) 1400B 1.6M 2.6M 0.62x
RX recv_from (sync) 1400B 990.1K 1.0M 0.98x

IPv4 avg sync/async ratio: 0.9x, worst: 1.0x | IPv6 vs IPv4 worst ratio: 1.31x (OK)

OK: IPv6 is 31.5% slower than IPv4 — within acceptable threshold (<50%). Expected due to larger headers (40B vs 20B) and mandatory UDP checksum.

Good: Async wrapper is within 1.0x of sync — minimal framework overhead.
