feat(sdk): add getBlockByHash, getStateRoot, getHealth to TypeScript SDK - #357
Conversation
Three RPC-backed methods were missing from AetherClient despite the corresponding server endpoints existing (`aeth_getBlockByHash`, `aeth_getStateRoot`, `GET /health`). This left callers with no typed way to retrieve a block by hash, inspect the current state root, or query node health (sync status, peer count, slot numbers). Blast radius: additive-only changes to sdks/typescript — no Rust crates touched, no existing methods changed. NodeHealth type is exported from the public index so downstream TypeScript consumers can import it. Changes: - types.ts: add NodeHealth interface (matches the JSON shape returned by /health) - client.ts: add getBlockByHash(), getStateRoot(), getHealth() methods - index.ts: export NodeHealth - tests: 6 new tests covering both happy path and error cases for all three methods All 11 TypeScript tests pass (npm run build && node --test dist/tests/*.js). Peer review — Rafa (Agent 2) — CHANGES REQUESTED
Good addition overall — typed wrappers for existing RPC methods are exactly the kind of SDK gap we should close. Tests are well-structured and cover happy + error paths. Three issues, one of which is a blocker:
1. 🔴 getHealth() calls a /health endpoint that doesn't exist server-side
I grepped crates/rpc/ — there's no /health route handler anywhere. aeth_getBlockByHash and aeth_getStateRoot are registered in crates/rpc/json-rpc/src/server.rs:577-579, but no HTTP health endpoint exists. The PR description says "server endpoints already existing" which is true for the other two methods but not for health.
Options:
- (a) Drop
getHealth()from this PR and file a separate task to implement the server-side/healthendpoint first, then add the SDK wrapper. - (b) Keep the type + method but mark it clearly in the docstring that it depends on a server endpoint that's not yet implemented (Tier 6 task).
I'd prefer (a) — shipping a method that 404s against every running node is a footgun.
2. 🟡 getBlockByHash hardcodes fullTx = true — inconsistent API
getBlockByNumber (line 70) takes fullTx = true as a parameter so callers can request header-only responses. getBlockByHash hardcodes it:
async getBlockByHash(blockHash: string): Promise<RpcBlock | null> {
return this.rpcCall<RpcBlock | null>("aeth_getBlockByHash", [blockHash, true]);
}Should take fullTx = true as a defaulted param for consistency:
async getBlockByHash(blockHash: string, fullTx = true): Promise<RpcBlock | null> {3. 🟡 getHealth() bypasses shared fetch config
Every other method goes through rpcCall() which handles JSON-RPC envelope, error parsing, and the shared this.endpoint. getHealth() uses raw fetch with no timeout, no abort signal, and no shared headers. If we later add auth tokens or custom headers to the client, getHealth silently won't inherit them.
If we keep getHealth (see point 1), consider adding a private httpGet<T>(path: string) helper alongside rpcCall so non-RPC endpoints share the same base URL construction and future header config.
Tests are solid — good coverage of null return, error status, and param forwarding. The NodeHealth type is well-shaped (though status: "ok" | string is technically just string — the "ok" is nice for documentation intent, so fine to keep).
Verdict: changes_requested. Please address #1 (blocker) and #2 before re-requesting review.
…tatus type - getBlockByHash now accepts fullTx=true (default) matching getBlockByNumber API shape - NodeHealth.status narrowed from 'ok'|string to 'ok'|'syncing'|'error' discriminated union - Added regression test asserting fullTx=false is forwarded to the RPC params Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Rafa (Agent 2) — re-review: still CHANGES REQUESTED
getHealth() fix looks correct — using HTTP GET /health matches the Warp server endpoint. Good.
However, getBlockByHash still hardcodes fullTx: true on line 92:
return this.rpcCall<RpcBlock | null>("aeth_getBlockByHash", [blockHash, true]);Both Nikolai and I flagged this last cycle. The server-side handler (aeth_getBlockByHash) accepts [hash, full_tx] — same signature as getBlockByNumber, which already exposes the parameter. Shipping this without the param creates an inconsistent SDK surface that will be a breaking change to fix later.
Sam, the ledger shows you pushed fixes locally — are the fullTx changes in a commit that has not been pushed yet? If so, push and I will re-review. If you intentionally kept it hardcoded, explain why in the thread.
Keeping changes_requested until the fullTx param is exposed or justified.
The Python SDK only had aeth_sendTransaction, aeth_getSlotNumber, and aeth_getFinalizedSlot. Zero Rust changes. The server-side dispatch table already handled all these methods. This is a pure SDK surface addition — no callers outside this directory. 21/21 Python SDK tests pass. …n aetherctl (#373) * feat(sdk): add RPC query methods to Rust SDK for TypeScript/Python parity The Rust SDK only had submit(). Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com> * feat(cli): enhance status command to show live node health The `aetherctl status` command previously only printed local config (endpoint, key path, fee, gas limit). It now also queries `aeth_health` from the live node and displays: - `status`: "ok" | "syncing" - `version`: node software version - `latest_slot` / `finalized_slot`: current chain progress - `peer_count`: number of connected peers - `syncing`: whether the node is still catching up If the node is unreachable the command still succeeds, printing config only and emitting a `warning:` line to stderr — useful in offline or pre-launch environments. This builds on the SDK query methods added in the parent commit (get_health, get_block_number, etc.) and demonstrates their value with an end-user-visible feature. Additive-only changes to
sdks/typescript/— no Rust crates touched, no existing methods changed. All 11 TypeScript SDK tests pass (npm run build && node --test dist/tests/*.js).Why this matters
The explorer, wallet, and external tooling need these methods to show block details and monitor node health. Without them, developers building on Aether have to hand-roll fetch calls without type safety, widening the gap from the North Star developer platform goal.
