FYI: there are be some test files available at https://github.com/MPEGGroup/FileFormatConformance/tree/767a5bcb9fa4841d1b3bb0ca112a6e7d4c6bf067/data/file_features/under_consideration/event_message, but not sure if it's worth to copy any of them, since the don't contain a silb box and the rest of the evte box is straight forward

Review in Change Stack →

Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius.

Walkthrough

The change adds Evte as a sample-entry atom and Silb as a scheme-list atom. Evte supports metadata and optional btrt and silb children. Silb encodes and decodes scheme entries and checks the declared count against the remaining buffer before allocating. The codec can now decode and encode Evte. Tests cover round-trips and rejection of an oversized scheme count.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 278b3

Scheme strings can fail to round-trip correctly, and the event-track documentation and duplicate-child handling still need attention. These bounded issues warrant fixes or explicit acceptance before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 278b3

Support for a new media sample entry expands what supplied files can cause the library to decode. The new path appears to retain the existing size checks and rejects impossible scheme counts before allocation. No security issue was established, but deployment exposure is unknown.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Callers that supply media sample-entry bytes to the public decoder can now reach Evte and Silb parsing. The evidence does not establish which services or users supply those bytes in deployment.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Atom-size and body-consumption checks remain on the path into the new decoders, while Silb rejects an impossible entry count before vector allocation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The scheme-count check returns OutOfBounds for an impossible count and limits initial vector capacity to 16; decoded strings still consume input-dependent bytes from the bounded body.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Correct the event-track sample format description.

An event-track sample contains one or more EventMessageInstanceBox boxes, or one EventMessageEmptyBox. It is not itself a serialized Emsg box. Update this sentence so callers do not encode the wrong sample format. (cdn.standards.iteh.ai)

Reject duplicate optional child boxes.

If an evte contains two silb boxes or two btrt boxes, these assignments discard the first box without an error. Each child is specified as optional, not repeatable. Return Error::DuplicateBox for a repeated child instead of silently changing the decoded metadata. (cdn.standards.iteh.ai)

@paroga Any idea if silb can be repeated? I assume they're meant to be packed into one instance (and flagged if they definitely do occur, or there might be others). However 23001-18 doesn't do the cardinality AFAICT.

as far is i understand the spec, i'd say no. it wouldn't make sense to have multiple silb boxes with e.g. different other_schemes values

Some minor suggestions, otherwise LGTM.

If there can only be version == 0 (which I infer, but again, 23001-18 does not appear to specify), can probably just do the shortcut.

Reject embedded NULs in scheme strings.

str::encode writes embedded NUL bytes unchanged, while String::decode stops at the first NUL. A value such as "a\0b" can shift the following field during decoding.
