feat(sandboxpolicy): enforce the SandboxPolicy network section with a portable egress gadget - #1073
This enforces the network section of SandboxPolicy (egress) with a new portable gadget, built the same way as the privilege gadget: one node-wide instance, a cgroup → policy-slot bindings map, and the policy as map data, so binding changes apply live and a policy change replaces the instance with overlap.
It is stacked on #1068. GitHub can't use a fork branch as the base, so this PR targets #1054's branch and also contains the commits of #1067 and #1068. Please review only the commits after a2c1d9d (19 commits), and merge after #1067 and #1068.
It has two parts, in commit order:
1. The gadget — pkg/ebpf/gadgets/enforce_network/ (portable, no node-agent or Kubernetes concepts)
Policy language (Go types + JSON/YAML, example in examples/policy.yaml): rules with allow/deny, audit/enforce, IPv4/IPv6 CIDRs, ports and port ranges, tcp/udp/any, except CIDRs on deny rules, and an egress default with its mode.
Compiler: one LPM trie keyed by (slot, prefix), IPv4 stored v4-mapped. The longest match carries every rule that covers it, so an except is a more specific prefix without that deny. Merging several policies follows common/merge/CONTRACT.md and passes its shared vectors (including "an audit deny never weakens another policy's enforce deny").
One decision function, two program tiers in the same image, selected by the tier param:
lsm (default): lsm/socket_connect, lsm/socket_sendmsg. Works with the pinned IG fork.
cgroup: cgroup/connect4|6, cgroup/sendmsg4|6 attached once at the host cgroup v2 root. No BPF LSM needed (AKS, Ubuntu defaults) and cheaper per call, but it needs two IG fork changes (see open questions).
Covered: TCP connect, UDP connect and sends with an address (DNS over UDP), TCP Fast Open, io_uring, IPv4-mapped IPv6, and the kernel parser cases (sockaddr_in on an AF_INET6 UDP socket, AF_UNSPEC sends). Deny returns EPERM; audit allows and emits wouldDeny.
Not covered (README): Unix sockets, raw/packet sockets with IP_HDRINCL (left to the privilege section, NET_RAW), SCTP, MPTCP subflows opened by the kernel, ping in the cgroup tier.
2. The node-agent layer — pkg/sandboxpolicy/
The section splitter routes network to a new backend. The privilege node owner (slots, replacement with overlap, pod-scheduled preparation) moves to igbackend/nodeowner.go and both sections use it; privilege behaviour does not change (about 350 of the removed lines are this move).
Translator (network.go): egress rules, ports, protocols, destClass, except, per-direction default and mode. It validates proto, direction and destClass again, because the storage validation doesn't.
Classes are resolved in node-agent, the gadget only sees CIDRs: the fixed local classes from the design (imds, workloadCredentialEndpoint, linkLocal, privateRanges), clusterInternal from Nodes podCIDRs and ServiceCIDR objects with kubeadm-config as fallback (aggregated, last good value kept on a read error, read only when a policy uses it), and backend classes from SandboxPolicyClasses (CIDR members).
Unresolved classes degrade as the ticket says: a deny rule goes to audit; an allow moves the direction default to audit, with Ready=False / ClassUnresolved.
Reported as not enforced, with a reason:listen rules and the listen default, dnsName, DNS-name class members, unknown, unix, icmp.
How to Test
go test ./pkg/ebpf/gadgets/... ./pkg/sandboxpolicy/...
Kernel test, as root on a Linux host: go test -tags network_kernel ./pkg/ebpf/gadgets/enforce_network/runtime/. I ran it on 6.8 (Ubuntu 24.04) and 6.12 (Debian 13), arm64, with the pinned IG fork (LSM tier) and with the two IG fork changes (both tiers; each tier loads only its own programs).
In kind (Kubernetes 1.36, 6.8): enforce deny, imds deny, audit wouldDeny, a live policy edit in about 5 s without restart, kubectl exec and exec probes, a dnsName deny that no longer weakens an enforce default deny, and an unresolved backend class that degrades and recovers.
Open questions
Unresolved class in a deny rule. Degrading the whole rule to audit can make a policy with an enforce default deny less strict: deny [imds, <unresolved class>] makes imds reachable. I'd like to keep the resolved part in enforce and audit only the unresolved part, instead of downgrading the whole rule. To be agreed with the design (Ben).
The cgroup tier needs two small generic IG fork changes: attach CGroupSockAddr programs at the host cgroup v2 root, and don't load disabled programs. Until they merge and the pin moves, node-agent always selects the LSM tier, and tier=cgroup fails at start with nothing loaded.
Storage fields:defaultMode, defaultOrigin and except (design PR send node profile periodically through synchronizer #295) are not in the storage types yet. The translator reads them from a small local mirror type, marked in the code, but today the CRD schema prunes them, so they only reach node-agent after storage adds them.
RBAC: node-agent needs networking.k8s.io/servicecidrs get/list/watch and get on kube-system/kubeadm-config in the helm chart; without them clusterInternal is only partly resolved.
With Cilium or Calico socket-LB, the cgroup tier sees the backend pod address, not the Service address (attach order). The LSM tier always sees the address the application asked for.
Nodes are listed once a minute while a policy uses clusterInternal; an informer is a follow-up.
Tracking: SUB-9584.

…ent library
pkg/ebpf/gadgets/common is a small library for BPF LSM enforcement gadgets:
the bindings map (cgroup -> policy slot), policy rank resolution, verdict
base fields and counters, the arming rule, and the Go binding controller of
one node-wide instance. It is taken from the enforce_exec simple engine of
the pinned Inspektor Gadget fork.
pkg/ebpf/gadgets/enforce_privilege enforces the SandboxPolicy privilege
section with BPF LSM, no seccomp: namespaces, mounts, pivot_root/chroot,
capabilities, ptrace, modules, bpf, perf, keys, io_uring, userfaultfd,
mknod, setuid/setgid and capset. Its compiler merges several policies into
one slot per combination.

…cy controller
- CompiledPolicy carries the privilege section; the compiler accepts it
- SectionBackend splits each plan per section; plans without a privilege
section go to the exec backend unchanged
- PrivilegeBackend owns one enforce_privilege instance per node: live
bind/unbind; a new policy combination replaces the instance with overlap
- slots are created when a matching pod is scheduled to the node
- sandboxPolicyPrivilegeImage enables the section; empty rejects it

- each namespace flag of a call resolves on its own (bpf_loop), so an
allow for one flag cannot carry another flag past a default deny
- compat ptrace read-mode access is not judged
- failed arming marks are counted; a deep tree arms instead of matching a
wrong namespace
- transient arming failures are retried and reported
- a binding whose rollback failed stays tracked for Unbind
- reject NUL in mountFsType and duplicate slot generation entries
- the gadget build loop stops on the first failure

The binding cgroup path comes from the container collection, which reads
/proc/<pid>/cgroup in the cgroup namespace of PID 1. node-agent runs in its
own cgroup namespace, where the same file shows a /../.. path, so every
lease check failed with "process cgroup changed" and no container bound.
Check now reads the file in PID 1's cgroup namespace when it differs.

…efix
Gadget eBPF parameters are named operator.oci.ebpf.<key>. The engine set
operator.ebpf.host-mntns-id, which IG ignored, so host_mntns_id stayed 0 and
the program used the global init task's mount namespace. In kind the
runtime runs in the node container's mount namespace, so runc init for
kubectl exec was armed and its setns(CLONE_NEWNS) was denied: every exec
into a bound pod failed.

…active
Without "bpf" in the host's active LSM list, BPF LSM programs attach but
never run (for example default AKS Ubuntu and Azure Linux images), so a
policy could report Ready with no enforcement. The service now reads
<host>/sys/kernel/security/lsm at startup; if bpf is missing it creates no
privilege backend, privilege bindings are refused, and every policy with a
privilege section reports Ready=False with reason BPFLSMInactive.

…an enforcing slot
When an armed task forks and the child's task storage mark cannot be
allocated, the child escaped every rule while the instance stayed ready.
Now an enforcing slot (any enforce entry) refuses the fork with -ENOMEM
(a clone into another cgroup too), and counts a tracking fault per slot
in arming_faults. A lost mark at exec, which cannot be refused, is
counted the same way. Audit-only slots and unbound cgroups allow the
fork. A new thread of an armed group leader is covered through the
leader and is never refused. Moving a container to another slot arms
its running tasks again. The binding controller reads the count with
SlotFaults. A test-only parameter injects the failure for the new
kernel test.

kubescape#1054 now keeps class errors per class name, and a policy fails only on
the errors of the shared classes its exec rules use. Pod plans follow the
same rule, so a class error in an unrelated policy no longer blocks a
pod binding, and the controller builds again with the new base.

Support both security_bpf hook signatures.
On kernels with the current four-argument security_bpf signature, Hooks["bpf"] remains 3, while ig_priv_bpf declares only cmd, attr, size, and ret. checkKernel() runs before operator creation, so this mismatch can make the complete enforce_privilege section unavailable.
Provide three-argument and four-argument ig_priv_bpf variants, and select the variant that matches kernel BTF before loading.
If variant selection is not possible, exclude only ig_priv_bpf when its signature does not match and report that syscall: [bpf] rules are not enforced. Do not reject the other hooks.

Right, thanks. The kernel argument came in 6.15 (not 6.9), and perf_event_open lost its attr argument in the same release. Fixed in #1067 (ec17414): both programs now read ret at the right position for the running kernel, chosen at load with a CO-RE type match against security_list_options. The BTF check returns a result per hook and accepts both signatures for these two. The other 21 hooks have the same argument count from 6.1 to 6.18.
…ntainer
A parent cgroup bound before its containers start (a pod cgroup) also
covered the OCI createContainer and startContainer hooks: runc init forks
them inside the container mount namespace, so they were armed and judged
as workload. A strict policy then stopped the container from starting (for
example kind's own createContainer hook, a bind mount).
A task is no longer armed at exec when its parent is unarmed, outside the
runtime mount namespace, and in the same mount namespace and cgroup as the
task: it was forked by a runtime helper inside the container. The workload
and exec commands are execed by runc init itself, whose parent is in the
runtime mount namespace, so they stay armed, and their children inherit
the mark as before. An unknown runtime namespace trusts no parent.

… of Linux 6.15
Linux 6.15 added `bool kernel` to the bpf hook and dropped the attr
argument of perf_event_open, so the previous-verdict check refused every
6.15+ kernel (and the old perf_event_open program would not load there).
Both programs now read `ret` at the position of the running kernel: a
CO-RE type match against security_list_options picks the branch at load.
The BTF check returns a result per hook (LSMHookArgMismatches) and
accepts both signatures for these two hooks. The other 21 hooks have the
same argument count from 6.1 to 6.18 (checked in lsm_hook_defs.h).

setns into a namespace checks CAP_SYS_ADMIN twice (the namespace user
namespace and the caller's). Audit lets the first check pass, so one
audited setns gives two identical verdicts; enforce stops at the first.
A per-syscall dedupe is not reliable in an LSM hook (there is no syscall
instance id, and a time window would merge real calls), so the README
documents it and a kernel test pins it down. The test fixture now records
the fields of each verdict.

The kubescape#1054 base moved to storage v0.0.388: PrivilegeTarget has no path,
fromImage or fsType fields any more, and Rule.Origin is a pointer. The
translator follows: it rejects actor and pathClass as before, now also
rejects except (the gadget has no exceptions, and they were ignored
before), and maps a missing origin and an empty one to no origin.

… storage types
kubescape/storage now has the network fields of the SandboxPolicy design
(sandbox-policy-crd.md section 6.1): NetworkSection.DefaultMode,
NetworkSection.DefaultOrigin and NetworkRule.Except. Use them and remove
the local NetworkExtras mirror and the pre-decode split of the raw spec.
- TranslateNetwork and validateNetwork take the spec only.
- An except entry is validated with NetworkException.Validate, so an
entry with an empty actor and no target is rejected, as in storage.
An except list on an allow rule is rejected also when it is empty.
- defaultOrigin is still not carried: the gadget default has no origin.

The first command of a new container could connect before its own
network binding existed. Pod bindings closed this gap for privilege
only.
Make pod bindings generic in the node owner:
- Controller.PodPlans builds the pod plan per section: a section is in
it only when every declared container of the pod gets the same
nonempty set of that section's policies. A pod can have a network
pod binding without a privilege one, or both.
- nodeOwner exports BindPods, so the network backend is a PodBinder.
SkipArming is a section setting (privilege arms, network does not).
- SectionBackend.BindPods forwards to every available section, and
the service does pod work when any section can bind pods.
The gadgets look up the nearest bound cgroup first, so the container
binding decides once it exists; the pod binding has the same slot.
