feat(desktop): open a usage popup from the tray icon - #5452
Conversation
Carries #5436 onto the current desktop shell. The shell renamed the tray menu handle, stopped passing a proxy into install, and moved tray installation and the Linux window decision into the startup sequence, so the change is re-expressed on that shape rather than merged into it. The tray title keeps its existing period and its keep-the-last-value behaviour on a failed read; the popup answers the detailed question instead of changing what the title means. Reserve a nonzero sentinel for the first popup show
When the popup is shown for the first time, process_start() initializes its Instant inside this call, so the millisecond-truncated elapsed value is normally 0; within_focus_grace() interprets that same value as “never shown.” On platforms that immediately emit Focused(false), the first click can therefore close the popup in the exact flash-and-disappear race this grace period is intended to prevent. Initialize the clock earlier or store an encoded nonzero timestamp.

Recheck focus after the grace period
When a platform sends its only Focused(false) event during the 400 ms grace period, this handler discards the event without scheduling a later check. The popup then remains visible, unfocused, and always-on-top; because it is already unfocused, later clicks elsewhere need not produce another focus-loss event, so normal click-away dismissal stops working until the user uses the tray icon or Escape. Defer the hide until the grace expires and cancel it if focus returns.

Include credit-only quota windows in tray rows
AccountQuota supports creditsUsd, and the existing dashboard buildQuotaRows renders it as the Total subscription credits limit, but this new tray projection only includes standard percentages and customWindows. For API-key accounts whose quota probe returns only creditsUsd, parseAccounts preserves a non-null quota while quotaWindows returns an empty array, causing the popup to report “No quota” despite a valid limit. Add the credit row using the same projection as the dashboard.

Remove nonexistent tray menu controls from the guide
The inspected Tauri menu in desktop/src-tauri/src/tray.rs has no Refresh now action, while its title polling reads /api/usage?range=7d and render_title displays one configured metric rather than today's requests, tokens, and cost together; showToday and showCost only control the popup. These newly added instructions therefore send desktop users looking for controls and behavior that do not exist. Rewrite this paragraph for the Tauri shell or implement the documented controls.

The Tray displays estimatedCostUsd, which represents an API list-price estimate rather than an actual charge. The Vietnamese catalog already uses "Chi phí ước tính" for this concept. Replace "Phí ước tính" with "Chi phí ước tính".

The pull_request check runs react-doctor at blocking: warning with no comment, review comment, or commit status, so nine findings failed the PR while being readable only inside the run's job summary. Reproduced with the repository's own pinned scan and fixed at the root rather than suppressed: - import useI18n from i18n/shared instead of through the barrel - hoist the hidden-provider and configured-model lookups into Sets in both the chart filter and filterUsage, keeping models === null as "all models" - move the pure incomplete() helper to module scope - key quota rows by an identity quotaWindows() now assigns That identity also closes a bug the index key was hiding: a provider may report two custom windows under one label, and the row key has to stay unique anyway or React reconciles two different windows onto the same row. The effect's post-await writes keep the single active() guard, which checks both disposal and the AbortSignal. The rule cannot see the property through a helper, so the finding carries a scoped suppression that states the evidence.
The popup sat next to the WidgetKit widget as a flat #202022 rectangle. macOS now gets the active HUD window material at a 12-point radius and Windows gets Acrylic, both through Tauri's own effects builder, so no new dependency is involved. Linux stays opaque: blur there belongs to the compositor and the effects path does not support it. That asymmetry is exactly where a transparent stylesheet would paint a hole instead of a panel, so one cfg constant, VIBRANT_SURFACE, decides both the native builder and the data-tray-vibrancy hook the page reads. The two cannot disagree because neither restates the other. Transparent windows on macOS require the macos-private-api feature and app.macOSPrivateApi; that forecloses Mac App Store submission, which this Developer ID DMG channel does not use. Also restores rustfmt formatting in popup.rs. The desktop shell job failed on the format step, which gates clippy and the Rust tests, so neither had run since the popup landed on the branch.
The popup and the menu bar widget showed the same numbers in two different visual languages. The page now uses the material behind a thin scrim, rounded tabular numerals with the leading figure carrying each section, secondary-tone labels, and separators only where the subject changes. The scrim is what keeps contrast stable across wallpapers; without it a light desktop washes the labels out. Every rule keeps an opaque default and layers the glass on top, so the stylesheet is correct on a platform that never sets the hook. The appended duplicate rules that had accumulated at the end of the file are folded into the blocks they were overriding. gui-tray-vibrancy-surface.test.ts reads both popup.rs and tray.css and fails if the dataset flag and the attribute selector drift apart. Nothing in either toolchain connects them, and a silent rename would either lose the glass or punch a hole.

Reserve zero only for the uninitialized timestamp.
process_start() is normally initialized inside mark_shown(). The first elapsed().as_millis() value can therefore be zero. Line 63 stores the sentinel value, so within_focus_grace() returns false during the initial opening.
If the platform reports immediate focus loss, the first tray click can show and close the popup in the same gesture. Encode elapsed timestamps as elapsed + 1, and use the same encoding for the current time.

Recheck focus after the grace period.
This branch discards a focus-loss event that occurs during FOCUS_GRACE. Some platforms do not emit a second Focused(false) event. The popup then remains visible after the user moves focus elsewhere.
Schedule a check for the end of the remaining grace period. Hide the popup only if it is still visible and unfocused. Capture the current SHOWN_AT_MS value and verify that it is unchanged before hiding, so a delayed task from an earlier opening cannot hide a newly opened popup.

Preserve credit-only quota data.
AccountQuota.creditsUsd is part of the management API projection, and normalizeQuotaForPlan() preserves it. This array drops it before rendering. An API-key account that reports only credit limits therefore shows an empty placeholder instead of its remaining credit and limit.
Extend the returned row model to include creditsUsd. Render its remaining, limit, percent, and optional expiresAt values in gui/src/pages/Tray.tsx. Add localized labels for the credit row.
As per coding guidelines, “Keep dashboard behavior aligned with the management API and provider configuration model.” As per path instructions, GUI state must stay consistent with management API responses.

Document the Linux menu's fixed anchor. The Linux show-usage path passes PhysicalPosition::new(0.0, 0.0). popup::show uses that value for monitor_from_point and geometry; it does not replace it with a menu position. The popup therefore opens at the selected work area's clamped edge, not at the tray or menu location. Update the documentation to state this fallback, or provide the actual menu position.

The GUI lint rule reads a template literal's leading text as UI copy, so both "custom:" and the key-shaped "quota.custom." failed the gates job. A custom window is identified by its own label now, with no literal at all; the de-duplication pass is what keeps that unique, including against the three fixed keys.
* fix(desktop): let the tray's left click reach the usage popup Attaching a menu to a tray icon makes the left click open that menu, and the builder never said otherwise. So on macOS and Windows the click never reached on_tray_icon_event in any visible way: the icon showed the menu, and the menu item that opens the popup is Linux-only. The popup #5452 added had no way to open at all on the two platforms where the left click is the whole interaction. Found by clicking it. The change reads correctly either way, which is why static review kept missing it — the handler is there, the event fires, and the wrong surface appears on top. Linux keeps the default. Its StatusNotifier hosts deliver no usable click event, so the menu is the entire interaction there and releasing it would remove the only way in. The pairing is now a test. Nothing in the type system connects .menu() to show_menu_on_left_click(), and the failure is quiet, so tray.rs reads its own production half at compile time and fails if a menu is attached without releasing the click. It slices the source at the test attribute because the assertions quote the call names they look for, and scanning the whole file would find the test's own literals and keep passing after the real calls were gone. * fix(desktop): give every platform a menu path to the usage popup Releasing the left click is not enough on macOS, and the reason is upstream: tray-icon assigns the menu to the NSStatusItem itself, so AppKit pops that menu on mouse-down before the crate's own click handler runs. show_menu_on_left_click(false) sets an ivar that handler reads, and the handler never gets the chance. Verified by reading tray-icon 0.24.2's macOS implementation after a locally built bundle kept showing the menu with the flag set. So the icon click cannot be the only way in. The Show Usage item was Linux-only because Linux hosts differ in whether a click reaches the application at all; that same reasoning applies to macOS for a different cause, and it leaves Windows as the only platform the icon alone would have served. The item is unconditional now. The click release stays: it is correct on Windows, where it does what it says. The guard covers the item too. Platform-gating it once already left two platforms with no way to the popup, so the test now fails if any line that mentions the item sits under a cfg attribute. * fix(desktop): anchor the menu-opened popup on the tray icon The menu handler passed a zero anchor, which popup::geometry clamps into the top-left corner of the work area. That was tolerable while the item was a Linux fallback; now that the menu is the ordinary way in on macOS, a window in the far corner reads as misplaced rather than as a menu. It reads the tray icon's rect and anchors on its centre. A host that cannot report a rect still gets the clamped corner, which is the best answer available there. * docs(devlog): record the glass popup opening from the tray menu Captured from a locally built bundle on macOS, against a runtime started with an isolated configuration home. The dashboard behind the panel shows through the material at the left edge, and the window is anchored under the icon rather than clamped into a corner. * fix(desktop): satisfy clippy and stop the guard matching its own prose Two things the format step had been hiding. It gates clippy and the Rust tests, so neither had run on the popup since it landed. clippy rejects the nested `if` inside the `Focused(false)` arm; it is a match guard now, with the same behaviour. The left-click guard matched the bare call name, and the comments above the menu explain why that flag is inert on macOS — so the assertion found its own prose earlier in the file than the builder and concluded the order was wrong. It matches the call site now. The ordering comparison is gone: it asserted nothing the presence of the call site does not already say. cargo test --lib tray:: and popup:: pass locally.
Summary
Carries #5436 onto the current desktop shell. A left click on the tray icon now opens a small
anchored window showing today and 30-day usage, the chart, the model rows and per-account limits,
instead of opening the whole dashboard. Reading the current numbers is the reason to look at a
tray icon at all, and the dashboard is still one menu item away.
The original branch could not be merged: the shell renamed the tray menu handle, stopped passing a
proxy into
install(the tray is built before a runtime is resolved, so every use reads thecurrent client from the app), moved tray installation and the Linux window decision into the
startup sequence, and routed Quit and Stop through the exit coordinator. The feature is therefore
re-expressed on that shape rather than merged into it, and three of the review findings on the
original are resolved by construction:
a settings read failed, so a good number became "Unavailable" the moment one request did not
answer. This tree already returns early on a failed read and leaves the last title standing, and
that is kept. The title also keeps its existing period; the popup answers the detailed question,
so adding it does not silently change what the title means.
usage_summaryis restored for thatreason — the original deleted it.
every Linux start. The startup sequence already probes for a real tray host and shows the window
only when there is none, which is the same intent stated more precisely.
showTodayhid the 30-day figure along with today's.The setting names one column and there is no setting that asks for neither, so each column now
answers for itself.
Two further changes, both small and both about not lying to the user:
it feel like a menu; the cost is that a platform which hands focus back to the shell right after
the click closes it in the same gesture that opened it, and the user sees a flash and no window.
is_tray_url,is_close_urlandis_dashboard_urlrestated the query and fragment that
TRAY_PATH,CLOSE_PATHandDASHBOARD_PATHalreadydefine, so the constants were dead outside tests and a matcher could have kept answering yes
after the page it names moved. These three decide what the popup may navigate to, so a stale yes
is the failure that matters.
The token abbreviation fix comes along unchanged: ten million tokens rendered as
1Mbecause thetrailing zero was trimmed from an integer result.
The popup now looks like the widget it sits next to
It was a flat
#202022rectangle beside a WidgetKit widget that uses the system material, rounded numerals and secondary-tone labels. macOS applies the active HUD window material at a
12-point radius and Windows applies Acrylic, both through Tauri's own effects builder, so no new
dependency is involved.
Linux stays opaque, and that asymmetry is the part that needed care: blur there belongs to the
compositor, and a transparent stylesheet on an opaque window paints a hole instead of a panel. One
cfgconstant,VIBRANT_SURFACE, decides both the native builder and thedata-tray-vibrancyhook the page selects on, so the two cannot disagree.
gui-tray-vibrancy-surface.test.tsreadspopup.rsandtray.csstogether and fails if the flag and the selector drift apart — nothing ineither toolchain connects them, and a silent rename would either lose the glass or punch the hole.
Transparent windows on macOS require the
macos-private-apifeature andapp.macOSPrivateApi.That forecloses Mac App Store submission; this shell ships as a Developer ID DMG, so the door it
closes is one this channel does not use.
The stylesheet also folds in the duplicate rules that had accumulated at the end of the file,
overriding blocks a few lines above them.
React Doctor and rustfmt
Two gates were red and neither failure was visible where a reviewer would look.
desktop shellfailed oncargo fmt --check, which gates clippy and the Rust tests, so neitherhad run since the popup landed on this branch. Fixed;
cargo fmt --checkandcargo checkbothexit 0 locally.
react-doctorreported nine blocking findings, and the action is configured withcomment: false,review-comments: falseandcommit-status: false, so they existed only inside the run's jobsummary. Reproduced with the repository's own pinned scan and fixed at the root: the barrel import,
five array lookups inside loops hoisted to Sets, the pure helper moved to module scope, and the
quota rows keyed by an identity
quotaWindows()now assigns. That last one also closes a bug theindex key was hiding — a provider may report two custom windows under one label, and the row key
has to stay unique anyway or React reconciles two different windows onto the same row. The
post-await state writes keep their single
active()guard, which checks both disposal and theAbortSignal; the rule cannot see the property through a helper, so that one finding carries ascoped suppression stating the evidence.
Verification
rule; hosted CI at the exact head is the authority.
cargo fmt --checkandcargo checkon the desktop crate: exit 0. The pinned React Doctorscan and
bun run lintingui: clean.tauri build --bundles debfinishes with zero warnings and zero errors, which matters because the desktop-shell jobtreats warnings as errors. Two were found and fixed that way: the popup imported a module this
tree does not have, and the two path constants were dead outside tests.
StatusNotifier host, which is exactly why the menu item exists there, so neither the icon click
nor the menu item can be exercised on it. macOS rendering and Escape-to-hide were verified by the
original author; Windows click-then-focus behaviour remains unverified, which is what the grace
period above is for.

Built and run on macOS from this branch. The window is the popup's page, rendered by the bundled
GUI against a runtime started with an isolated configuration home, so the numbers are that
instance's own traffic rather than anything from the machine's real accounts.
Both usage columns are visible together, which is the fix for the setting that used to hide the
30-day figure along with today's.
What the macOS build turned up
Two things worth recording, neither of them introduced by this change:
prepare-sidecarbuilds the standalone binary onlywhen the file is missing, so a bundle built today shipped yesterday's
ocx. The app reported itprecisely — "the bundled CLI's resolve contract has not landed" — which is the startup surface
doing its job, but the packaging step should not be able to produce that mismatch silently.
linker-signed ad-hoc signature is refused;
codesign --force -s -on the binary fixes it. Beforethat the app showed "the bundled CLI could not resolve the runtime (exit no exit code)", which is
exactly what a SIGKILL looks like from the parent's side.
