fix(responses): strip max_output_tokens only where the backend rejects it - #5753
Conversation
…s it stripUnsupportedForwardParams ran for every forward provider, outside the isCanonicalOpenAiForwardProvider guard, dropping the caller's max_output_tokens cost cap on self-hosted and third-party gateways that honour it — the turn then generates far more than was authorised. Keep stripping metadata on every forward route; strip max_output_tokens only on the canonical backend that rejects it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>

Document destination-specific max_output_tokens forwarding.
When canonical is false, stripUnsupportedForwardParams removes only metadata. When canonical is true, it also removes max_output_tokens. This changes whether the caller's output cap reaches the destination. Document this behavior in docs-site/, such as docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/proxy-formats.md.

State that output-cap enforcement depends on the destination.
The proxy preserves max_output_tokens for noncanonical forward routes and serializes it unchanged. It does not apply a per-turn output limiter. The destination must enforce the field for the cap to bound the turn.
Suggested documentation fix
-`max_output_tokens` is removed only on that canonical route, which rejects the field outright; every other forward destination receives the caller's output cap unchanged, so a limit set by the caller still bounds what the turn spends.

The /v1/messages ingress deleted max_output_tokens for every provider on the openai-responses adapter, so a Claude Code turn routed to a self-hosted or third-party Responses gateway lost the caller's max_tokens cap and its output spend was no longer bounded. The adapter already strips the field only for the canonical ChatGPT backend that rejects it (lidge-jun#5753), so the ingress delete is dropped and the decision stays with the concrete target. Summary
max_output_tokensis the caller's cost cap on a turn. In forward mode it is stripped from every forward destination, not only the one that rejects it — so on a self-hosted or third-party gateway that honours the field, the cap is silently removed and the turn may generate far more than the caller authorised. The call sits one line outside the guard that exists for exactly this distinction, at
src/adapters/openai-responses/passthrough.ts:326-330:The comment states the rule; the line above it breaks the rule.
stripUnsupportedForwardParamsdropsmax_output_tokensandmetadata(canonical-forward.ts:74-81), and its own doc justifies the removal purely by the canonical backend: "parameters the ChatGPT backend (authMode: "forward") rejects".The repo already treats preserving the cap as correct wherever the backend does not reject it — see the existing test
key-auth mode preserves max_output_tokens and metadata, immediately below the one added here. What this changes
The two fields are split by where each is actually required:
metadata— still stripped on every forward route. Unchanged.max_output_tokens— stripped only whenisCanonicalOpenAiForwardProvider(provider), the backend that rejects it outright with{"detail":"Unsupported parameter: …"}.stripUnsupportedForwardParamstakes acanonicalflag; there is one call site. The allocation-free fast path for the common Codex route is preserved — the body is only copied when a dropped key is actually present. No behaviour change for the canonical ChatGPT backend, and none for key-auth mode.
Verification
Revert proof: with the fix reverted, the added test
noncanonical forward mode keeps the caller's max_output_tokens capfails — the non-canonical gateway body comes back withoutmax_output_tokens. Restored, it passes. No existing test was removed, weakened, or re-pointed. The pre-existing
forward mode strips max_output_tokens and metadatauses the canonical provider fixture and passes unchanged, which is the intended behaviour for that backend. Not run: the full
bun run testsuite. The changed module has one call site and its tests are in the single file exercised above.Checklist
