Summary

  • Keep the Claude Desktop picker's CA signing key process-scoped: the key is generated in-process and never written to disk. Only the public ca.pem and leaf.pem are published under <OPENCODEX_HOME>/claude-picker/.
  • A persisted picker CA private key plus a predictable loopback proxy port previously allowed a same-user lower-integrity process to impersonate claude.ai and intercept Claude Desktop traffic.
  • Publication is stamped with ca-owner.json {pid, sha256} under a ca.lock.sqlite lifecycle lease: a live foreign owner's CA is left untouched and is only reclaimed after the owner exits; any legacy ca.key is dropped on every ensurePickerCa call.
  • At intercept startup, an outgoing published certificate that differs from this process's authority is untrusted from a private 0600 copy; the picker refuses to arm when the predecessor cannot be untrusted, so the main intercept pair keeps serving.
  • trustPickerCa installs from a private 0600 copy of the caller-verified PEM rather than the shared, swap-prone ca.pem; picker status responses carry the server's caSha256; the CLI fails closed with ca_unverified unless the file fingerprint matches the running server's authority.

Verification

  • bun run typecheck — clean.
  • bun test on the four touched suites — 87 pass, 0 fail (run serially): claude-picker-ca 8/8, claude-picker-runtime 22/22, claude-picker-trust 8/8, claude-desktop-cli 49/49.
  • Note: on Windows each user-scope lifecycle-lock acquisition is a PowerShell SID lookup (~10s); a parallel full-suite run can flake on the shared lock (pre-existing environmental limitation).

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Picker mode now verifies that the certificate being trusted matches the one reported by the live proxy. Outdated or untrusted certificates can prevent picker startup, while the main intercept service remains available.
    • Applied picker profiles are restored after restart when possible; a busy picker port leaves the profile available for a later retry.
  • Documentation

    • Updated picker-mode guidance to explain that macOS may request certificate trust again after each OpenCodex restart. You can approve the prompt or run ocx claude desktop picker trust.

Reworked onto current dev (post constrained-CA landing in the merge train).

The picker CA signing key is process-scoped: generated in-process, only the
public ca.pem and leaf.pem are published, and any legacy ca.key is dropped on
every ensurePickerCa call. Publication is stamped with a ca-owner.json {pid,
sha256} under a ca.lock.sqlite lifecycle lease, so a live foreign owner's CA
is left untouched and only reclaimed after the owner exits.

Restart handling: the lifecycle captures the outgoing published certificate,
untrusts it from a private 0600 copy when it genuinely differs from this
process's authority, keeps the applied Desktop profile row as durable
evidence, refuses to arm the picker when the predecessor cannot be
untrusted, and re-runs the controller enable flow so a rotated authority is
re-trusted and the selection restored.

Trust hardening: trustPickerCa installs from a private 0600 copy of the
caller-verified PEM rather than the shared, swap-prone ca.pem; picker status
responses carry the server's caSha256 and the CLI fails closed
("ca_unverified") unless the file fingerprint matches the authority the
running server owns; a malformed published certificate is treated as
unidentifiable so startup proceeds.

Docs: guides (en + 7 translations) and the SSOT structure doc now describe
per-restart re-trust.

Tests: picker CA/runtime/trust and desktop CLI suites cover the ephemeral
authority, ownership, rotation and verification behavior. On Windows each
lifecycle-lock acquisition is a PowerShell SID lookup, so the two restart
tests use the sibling test's 30s timeout and longer settle loop.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The picker CA signing key now remains in process memory, and picker status exposes its SHA-256 fingerprint. The CLI verifies that fingerprint before installing a CA. Runtime startup handles CA replacement and applied-profile restoration. The documentation and integration tests reflect the updated lifecycle.

Changes

Claude desktop picker CA

Layer / File(s) Summary
Process-scoped CA publication
src/claude/intercept/picker-ca.ts:19-150, tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-ca.test.ts:131-219
The CA is cached in process memory. Publication writes the certificate and process owner record, and handles live foreign owners. Calls remove legacy ca.key files. Tests cover cached publication, process changes, and owner handling.
Fingerprint-verified trust
src/claude/desktop-picker.ts:39-238, src/claude/intercept/picker-trust.ts:87-110, src/cli/claude-desktop.ts:139-168,613-646, tests/claude-integration/claude-desktop-cli.test.ts:575-749, tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-trust.test.ts:125-151
Picker status reports caSha256. The CLI obtains the live fingerprint and rejects a local CA when its fingerprint is missing or does not match. Trust installation uses the supplied PEM from a temporary file. Tests cover matching and mismatching fingerprints and temporary-file cleanup.
Restart handling and profile restoration
src/claude/intercept/runtime.ts:183-306, structure/clients/claude-desktop.md:166-179, tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-runtime.test.ts:325-668, docs-site/src/content/docs/**/claude-code.md:135-216
Runtime startup removes a differing trusted CA before picker creation and restores an applied profile through the enable flow. If picker binding fails, the picker runtime stops while the main intercept pair remains available. Tests and documentation describe CA rotation and restart behavior.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d47d2

After a restart where the old certificate cannot be untrusted, or where the picker port is busy, Claude Desktop can lose all network access while OpenCodex runs. CA publication can also race across processes. Fix these before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to d47d2

The new design keeps signing keys out of shared files and verifies certificates before trusting them. However, an interrupted or failed certificate replacement can leave an older certificate trusted without a reliable way to find and remove it. Starting a second process can also revoke trust needed by a picker that is still running.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: Replacement CA publication precedes revocation of the outgoing CA. After a failed removal or interruption, the outgoing certificate is no longer recorded as the current CA; later startup and disable operations target the replacement instead. An older trusted certificate can therefore remain in the login keychain after picker cleanup.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: A fresh process publishes its CA without checking for a live foreign owner, and lock failure falls back to publication without the lease. Startup can then revoke the active process’s certificate before attempting to bind the picker proxy. If that port is occupied by the active process, its Desktop profile remains selected while its certificate is no longer trusted.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected trust and proxy state belongs to the local user’s Claude Desktop picker, not the main authenticated intercept proxy. Abuse of a stranded legacy certificate would require its private key and control of an endpoint used by Desktop; the reviewed code does not establish broader service or tenant exposure.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — If a legacy CA key was copied before upgrade, and predecessor trust remains after a failed or interrupted rotation, that certificate could still authenticate a substitute Claude Desktop proxy. The new cleanup path can lose the predecessor’s identity, so a later picker-off operation need not remove that trust. This is a conditional attack path, not evidence that a key was copied or an endpoint taken over.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The shared ca.pem is not accepted as trust-installation authority by itself: the CLI checks it against the running server’s fingerprint, and installation uses verified bytes from a private temporary file. Startup also blocks picker creation when predecessor removal reports failure, though that does not preserve the predecessor for recovery.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Replacing a live owner before proxy bind couples certificate trust to an uncommitted handoff. A competing startup can leave an existing Desktop selection pointing at a running proxy whose CA has been untrusted, even though the competing startup retains the profile row after bind failure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Record pending predecessor revocation durably before replacing its publication, and retry that revocation on recovery and picker removal. Keep the active owner’s publication and trust intact until a replacement can complete the proxy handoff; do not publish when the lifecycle lease cannot be obtained.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

The undefined lock sentinel cannot tell "lock refused" from "callback returned void". Every publish runs again without the lock.

withClientLifecycleSync returns whatever the callback returns (src/client/lifecycle-lock.ts:109-129). Both callbacks return void:

  • republishUnlessForeignOwned (Lines 116-123)
  • publish (Line 134)

So underPickerCaLock(...) returns undefined even after the locked call succeeds. The === undefined checks at Line 124 and Line 135 are then always true, so each call runs a second time outside the lock.

Consequences:

  1. Cached path (Line 125). The unlocked re-run repeats the read → foreignLiveOwner → publishAuthority sequence with no lock. This is the exact interleaving the lock should prevent (see the JSDoc at Lines 82-86). A peer can publish between the locked run and the unlocked run. The unlocked run then decides against a stale read.
  2. Fresh path (Line 135). publishAuthority always runs twice. The second write is not locked. It can overwrite a peer's certificate that was published in the gap.
  3. Hidden errors. The catch also turns exceptions thrown inside check (for example an EACCES from publishPem) into "lock refused". The unlocked fallback then retries and may throw a different error.

The tests pass because a repeated publish is idempotent when only one process runs.

Fix: make the callbacks return a value. Separate lock failure from callback failure.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The temporary copy is created outside the try/finally. A failed write leaks the directory and throws instead of returning a result.

mkdtempSync (Line 96) and writeFileSync (Line 98) run before the try at Line 100. If writeFileSync throws (disk full, or tmpdir quota), two things happen:

  • privateDir stays on disk, because the finally at Lines 109-111 has not been entered yet.
  • trustPickerCa throws instead of returning { ok: false, reason: "declined_or_failed" }. The unchanged catch at Line 107 promises that result shape.

enableLocked catches the exception, but reports it as profile_failed instead of a trust failure.

Fix: move the temporary-copy setup into the guarded block.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

If the picker is blocked or fails to bind, the applied profile still points Desktop at an egress proxy that does not exist. All Desktop traffic then fails, not only the picker.

The applied profile is kept on purpose (Lines 188-195). Its only field is egressProxyUrl = http://127.0.0.1:<pickerPort>. Desktop sends all of its traffic through that proxy (see the structure/clients/claude-desktop.md picker section).

Two new paths leave the picker proxy unbound while the profile stays selected:

  1. Blocked picker (Lines 230-235). If untrustPickerCa fails for the predecessor, picker = null. The if (picker) block at Line 246 is skipped, so startProxy(claudePickerProxyPort(...)) never runs. The port stays free, so every Desktop connection is refused. The user sees ⚠ Claude Desktop picker disabled, but Desktop has no network while OpenCodex is running.
  2. Bind failure (Lines 271-278). The port is held by another process, so Desktop's traffic reaches that process.

Also, controller stays null in both cases. ocx claude desktop picker status shows the offline status and does not say that Desktop is pinned to a dead proxy.

The docs claim that "a failed removal stops the picker arming" and that "a picker proxy bind failure only disables picker mode". In both cases the result is broader: Desktop has no network.

Fix option for path 1: separate "picker terminator allowed" from "egress proxy bound". When pickerBlocked is true, still bind the picker CONNECT proxy. Give it a selectTunnel that keeps the non-browser intercept branch and returns { kind: "blind" } for browser CONNECTs. Desktop keeps connectivity, and claude.ai is never terminated by an untrusted-predecessor setup.

Fix option for path 2: the port is not ours, so log a warning that names the retained profile row. Tell the user to run ocx claude desktop picker off to restore Desktop connectivity.

Sketch for the blocked case
-      picker = pickerBlocked ? null : (options.createPicker ?? createPickerRuntime)({
+      picker = pickerBlocked ? null : (options.createPicker ?? createPickerRuntime)({
         ...
       });
-      if (picker) {
-        const runtime = picker;
+      if (picker || (pickerBlocked && pickerProfileApplied)) {
+        const runtime = picker;
         const interceptPort = listener.port!;
         try {
           pickerProxy = await startProxy(claudePickerProxyPort(options.config, options.publicPort), {
             interceptPort,
             interceptHosts: [],
             selectTunnel: (host, port, request) => {
               if (!isBrowserConnect(request)) { ... }
-              return runtime.selectTunnel(host, port);
+              return runtime ? runtime.selectTunnel(host, port) : { kind: "blind" };
             },
           });

Add a test: set up an applied profile, then make remove-trusted-cert fail. Assert that the picker port still accepts a browser-UA CONNECT example.com:443 with a blind 200.

예전에는 서명 열쇠가 <OPENCODEX_HOME>/claude-picker/ca.key로 남았어요.

안내 문구도 그 뜻으로 여덟 언어와 structure/clients/claude-desktop.md에 반영돼 있어요.

types.ts와 config.ts를 나누는 작업과는 안 겹쳐요.

라인 - src/claude/intercept/picker-ca.ts 60행.

라인 - src/claude/intercept/runtime.ts 235행.

라인 - src/claude/intercept/picker-trust.ts 96행.

테스트 a second process mints a fresh authority도 나중 프로세스가 이긴다고 잠가 두었어요.

Landed on dev in #6073 (merge 7f9f0e53d2) as one squashed commit that keeps your authorship. A follow-up commit (40377e70da) also removes a legacy ca.key on every intercept start, including when the picker or intercept is off, and corrects the lock helper's comment. Thank you. Closing because this repository merges into dev, so GitHub does not close carried PRs automatically.

Follow-up to lidge-jun#6072 from its review. The legacy claude-picker/ca.key was removed only when picker code ran, so an upgrade with the picker or intercept off kept the old signing key of a CA that may still be trusted. startClaudeIntercept now removes it first on every start and never fails startup over it. The underPickerCaLock comment now says what the lock fallback does: a fresh authority publishes without the lock and the displaced peer defers to the new owner record.
