Summary

  • Claude first-party Desktop reused only a process-lived picker CA, so each proxy restart replaced the approved root and repeated Certificate Trust Settings authorization. Retain the validated, claude.ai-constrained signing identity in the existing OS credential store, with journaled initialization and no plaintext picker-key fallback. Normal startup restores the same root and inspects trust without installing it. Explicit enable/trust retains the consent path.
  • Skip unsupported picker credential/certificate/proxy effects on Windows and Linux. Defer credential access for unused macOS picker installations, preserve later explicit activation, and guard local intercept CA files with ownership/type checks, bounded descriptor reads, exclusive temporary publication and strict Windows owner/ACL inspection before key writes.
  • Update both structure owners and English plus seven translated guides. This remains one repair covering the requested certificate lifecycle and platform paths; the two security domains received separate reviews.

Verification

  • Main critical picker regression run: 98 passed, 0 failed across store/startup/controller/runtime/CA files; includes two fresh production processes retaining the fingerprint, zero trust mutations for approved or lost-trust restarts, dormant activation, unsafe state and asynchronous disarm.
  • Main local-CA regression run: 69 passed, 0 failed; test-layout guards: 18 passed, 0 failed.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, and git diff --check: passed.
  • Docs build: 561 pages and 78,096 internal links passed.
  • Independent picker and local-CA security reviews: PASS for 9c8b16244e707f9efa58005fb350ffa350964732; subsequent application sources stayed unchanged through the validation-harness commit. Final picker review repair received independent security PASS at d9431665bdee24684b8523e8183ebc157967948f, covering all seven files.
  • Verification repair preserves all assertions: launchd authority and standalone-home fixtures now use the existing fresh-process roster; five real-install doctor cases have 10-second outer budgets for the unchanged 5-second observation. Independent audit passed.
  • Final scoped verification ran each affected file in a fresh wrapped process: 312 passed, 0 failed, 3 platform skips, followed by typecheck, structure and privacy gates. The later review repair passed 79 focused tests and a fresh source-bound receipt with all three gates again.
  • Full local runs were attempted. The first exposed nine harness failures corrected above; later monolithic/batch attempts encountered unrelated Bun child-spawn stalls or shared/installed-home discovery assumptions. Those runs are not reported as passing. Expanding local infrastructure changes or clearing/stopping the developer’s installed proxy was outside this repair; broader validation is supplied by the successful complete hosted Linux shards.
  • Pre-repair Cross-platform CI: run 37322232787, event pull_request, attempt 1, head e994d2ad56998acf372903d5e53315cf2cf6ca93: SUCCESS. All four Linux full-suite shards, storage policy, gates, API usage, structure, docs, Docker, keyring Ubuntu/Windows and npm-global Ubuntu/Windows jobs succeeded. Final exact-head CI run 37333122741, pull_request, attempt 1, head 1193405d46d9c5d4cf11125bddbae196a12852e0: SUCCESS. All expected Linux shards and requested gate/packaging jobs completed successfully; the 22 required PR checks also succeeded. The final test-only commit removed an unused import from the embedded restart child, with 7/0 startup tests and fresh typecheck/structure/privacy receipt. Application source remains unchanged from the independently reviewed d9431665bd. Diagnostic native full Windows/macOS legs remain excluded by the repository’s PR policy; skipped legs are not presented as passing coverage.
  • Credential/trust behavior uses fake boundaries in regression tests; packaged native keychain unlock/access dialogs remain unverified. The guarantee covers Certificate Trust Settings mutations for an unchanged approved identity with an available credential store. Legacy migration can still require its one-time cleanup consent.

Maintainer integration into dev is selected by @lidge-jun under MAINTAINERS.md, without a second maintainer approval. This is not a self-approval; independent scoped security reviews and exact-head CI evidence are recorded above. Outstanding maintainer objections remain blockers.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request adds persistent, credential-store-backed picker CA identity on macOS and changes picker startup and trust handling. It also strengthens local CA file protections, including Windows ACL checks, and updates integration tests, test scheduling, and Claude Desktop documentation in several languages.

Changes

Claude Picker Identity and Interception

Layer / File(s) Summary
Persistent picker CA storage and recovery
src/claude/intercept/picker-ca-store.ts, src/claude/intercept/picker-ca-persistence.ts, src/claude/intercept/picker-ca.ts, src/claude/intercept/picker-ca-startup.ts, tests/helpers/picker-ca-store.ts, tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-ca-store.test.ts, tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-ca.test.ts, tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-recovery.test.ts
Picker CA credentials and public recovery records are validated and published as a persistent identity. Tests cover identity reuse, recovery, invalid credentials, and publication failures.
Picker startup, trust, and platform wiring
src/claude/desktop-picker.ts, src/claude/intercept/picker-runtime.ts, src/claude/intercept/runtime.ts, tests/claude-integration/claude-desktop-picker*.test.ts, tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-startup.test.ts, tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-runtime.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
Runtime prepares persistent picker authority for eligible macOS configurations. Restored profiles disable trust prompts, and picker startup remains pending when trust is not established. Tests cover startup, restart, migration, refusal, and platform behavior.
Local CA file protection
src/claude/intercept/local-ca-files.ts, src/claude/intercept/local-ca-windows.ts, src/claude/intercept/local-ca.ts, tests/claude-integration/claude-intercept-local-ca-*.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
Local CA persistence uses validated and pinned file access, protected staged writes, and Windows ACL checks. Tests cover unsafe paths, permissions, ACLs, and publication races.
Picker behavior and platform documentation
structure/clients/claude-desktop.md, structure/runtime.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/*/guides/claude-code.md
The documentation describes credential-store identity reuse, trust restoration, migration cleanup, and Windows and Linux picker limitations. It also documents local CA file checks.

Test Execution Adjustments

Layer / File(s) Summary
Serial suite and test isolation settings

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 11934

The startup test’s helper path is independent of the child working directory. macOS credential-store prompts or unavailability remain bounded by the documented pending or blind-relay behavior; no concrete product failure is established.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 11934

The inspected design preserves explicit trust consent and rejects unsafe identity or file state. No introduced security defect was established. Persistent signing authority still warrants caution because native credential-store behavior and Windows permission enforcement were not exercised in this review.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Persistence extends the lifetime of exportable picker signing material beyond one process. Its storage identity is bound to the canonical configuration directory, and its certificate-level DNS scope is the claude.ai namespace rather than arbitrary hosts or IP addresses. This bounds authority but does not establish the native credential store's effective access policy.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Local CA access checks owner, type, link count, permissions, and file identity; reads are descriptor-based and bounded. New files are created exclusively and protected before secret writes. Windows inspection requires effective-user ownership and rejects unexpected allow grants; inspection failures reject the path.
  • observed — Startup restore disables trust prompts, while explicit controller activation retains the trust-consent path. The fresh-process regression asserts stable fingerprints and zero trust mutations for approved restarts and lost-trust restarts; its credential and trust boundaries are injected, not native OS integrations.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Picker startup rechecks generation, latch, and stopped state after asynchronous authority preparation. Disarm invalidates the current generation and closes listeners, preventing delayed initialization from activating TLS interception after cancellation.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate packaged macOS credential access under locked-store, denied-access, readback-failure, and interrupted-publication conditions, and exercise Windows owner/ACL checks on native systems. This would reduce the remaining platform-boundary uncertainty without weakening fail-closed behavior.

Review comments at @src/claude/desktop-picker.ts:
- Line 194: Update compensateTrust to call untrustCurrentCa instead of
ensurePickerCa and fingerprinting a newly ensured CA, so cleanup only untrusts
the published certificate without initializing signing credentials. Add a
regression test for a refused CLI enable asserting the picker CA store has no
writes and authority.json is not created.

Review comments at @src/claude/intercept/runtime.ts:
- Around line 220-225: Update the `preparePersistentPickerAuthority` catch block
and the `pickerBlocked` warning so failures report the error’s actual cause; use
the untrust-specific wording only for `picker_ca_pending_untrust` and otherwise
log the reported error code or message. Avoid emitting a second generic untrust
warning for other failures.

Review comments at @structure/runtime.md:
- Line 255: In the runtime documentation sentence describing the macOS picker’s
signing identity, hyphenate “credential-store protected” as the compound
modifier “credential-store-protected”; leave the surrounding contract text
unchanged.

Review comments at @tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-ca-store.test.ts:
- Around line 87-100: Make the symlink-dependent tests in the Claude picker CA
store suite skip on Windows, including the alias, metadata-mismatch, and
unsafe-directory tests. Update the rename failure injector to match the
destination basename rather than a slash-delimited path so injected publication
failures work with Windows path separators.
