handling in CompactionRetainedRequestsPanel so rejected PUT requests are
described as having an unknown outcome, not as leaving the previous setting
active; reload /api/settings after failure to reflect the persisted state.
Review comments at @src/server/responses/request-prepare.ts:
- Around line 426-433: Add focused regression tests for replay-prefix shrinking
in the retained-requests compaction tests, exercising the behavior around
dropRequestsRetainedBeforeCheckpoint and shrinkPreviousResponseReplayPrefix. Set
a recorded prefix, remove items both inside and outside it, and assert
previousResponseReplayPrefixLength equals the original prefix length minus
removals inside it; also verify the result clamps to zero.

… checkpoint already finished (lidge-jun#6764) After a compaction, Codex's replacement history is the recent user requests followed by one SUMMARY_PREFIX checkpoint message; routed remote compaction v1 returns the same shape. The lidge-jun#7003 continuation note only covers decoded ocx1 items, so this plaintext checkpoint gets no note, and routed models redo a request the checkpoint already reports as finished. Add `compactionDropRetainedRequests` (default off). When on, request-prepare removes plain-text user requests in front of the latest plaintext checkpoint from the raw body before parsing, so translated adapters and the native passthrough see the same input. Context wrappers, non-text content, assistant and tool items, earlier checkpoints and compaction requests are untouched; a replayed previous_response_id prefix shrinks by the removed items. Dashboard Overview gets a switch below compaction routing, backed by GET/PUT /api/settings, with copy in all locales.
…nfirmed save; pin the replay-prefix shrink A failed or timed-out PUT does not prove the server kept the old value, so the dashboard switch now re-reads /api/settings instead of flipping back, and the error copy in all locales says the save could not be confirmed. Move the body-level drop into dropRetainedRequestsInBody and cover the previous_response_id replay prefix: removals inside the prefix shrink it, removals after it do not, and an over-large shrink clamps at zero.

…e switch is stored When the follow-up read also fails, the switch keeps its optimistic value, so the notice in all locales now only says the save could not be confirmed. A panel test covers the save and re-read both failing: the switch locks and Retry restores it.

Reviewed head 8ae651fb6a3990a1267e7a0e2e9c9f5172a71166 against merge base 08bb2e485d56115d2ecd641a15659ff912b69d38, in a dedicated worktree. Current origin/dev has #7003's decoded-ocx1: continuation note, but still leaves plaintext checkpoints outside that contract; this is not already fixed there.
Automated checks pass, but the two correctness findings below prevent approval. The GUI build reports the existing large-chunk warning.
-
[P1] Preserve canonical replay history before projecting the outbound prompt. Mutating
body.inputalso changesparsed._rawBody, which the delivery paths pass torememberResponseState. When a later request carriesprevious_response_idplus the original client history, its prefix no longer matches the shortened cached entry.expandPreviousResponseInputconsequently prepends that entry, duplicating provider output and checkpoints. I reproduced this with the real state and selector functions: the disabled control retains onemsg_review; enabling the option retains two copies of that same provider-issued message ID after the next replay. Shrinking the prefix length inside the current request does not repair the next request's overlap comparison. See the inline finding at line 93. -
[P2] Preserve the details of unfinished requests. Position before a checkpoint does not imply completion. For
[A, B-with-spec-path, checkpoint("A done; B active")], the selector removes the only copy of B's specification path. The existing test also explicitly removes active task B. The summary is a lossy account, so “the summary still records them” does not establish that the active task's requirements survive. See the inline finding at line 76.
My preferred revision is a default-on projection for translated prompts that labels retained requests as historical source context, preserves their verbatim details, and lets the checkpoint describe which work is completed or unfinished. Do not label every retained request completed. Keep canonical raw/cache history intact and preserve native pass-through semantics. Extending a continuation note alone is not proof of model behavior; the revised projection needs the existing model replays plus a fixture with unfinished work and details omitted by the summary. The reported 8/12 quoted-history result is a useful baseline, not evidence that deleting active-task requirements is safe. A destructive global setting and dashboard panel should not be the primary compatibility fix.
Verification on this head:
bun run typecheck: pass.bun test tests/responses/compaction-retained-requests.test.ts tests/responses/continuation-dedup.test.ts tests/config/compaction-drop-retained-settings.test.ts: 29 pass, 0 fail.bun test tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts: 36 pass, 0 fail; no size-cap or layout failure.bun run structure:checkandbun run privacy:scan: pass.- In
gui/,bun run lint:i18n, the new panel's five tests, the 18 locale/parity tests, andbun run build: pass. All 11 registered locale catalogs have the new keys. This checks catalog completeness, not native-language fluency in every translation. - A separate scratch reproducer using the real selector/cache functions: one disabled control passes; enabled replay deduplication and preservation of an active task's unique specification reference fail. No tracked files were changed.
bun run test:changed --parallel=1was attempted but remained queued behind the shared test-runner lock and was terminated while waiting (exit 143, no tests executed). I did not bypass the lock or run the full suite: many triage lanes share the 16-core host. Broader validation remains outstanding; the focused results above are not a claim thattest:changedor the full suite passed.
PR readiness: the body contains both off/on screenshots, and their SHA-pinned assets exist outside this PR's branch. Latest exact-head label, hygiene, resolve-pr, and enforce-target checks are successful; the earlier cancelled checks were superseded. CodeRabbit is successful. However, Cross-platform CI's PR run (the Ubuntu subset), Catalog async contracts, and React Doctor report action_required awaiting fork-workflow approval, so required runtime CI is not green. No macOS/Windows workflows were dispatched.
blocking_issues: replay duplication and loss of unfinished-task requirements.
Verdict: Request changes.

[P1] Keep canonical continuation history separate from this outbound projection. This assignment changes parsed._rawBody, and adapter-delivery.ts / passthrough-dispatch.ts cache that shortened input via rememberResponseState. On the next previous_response_id request carrying the original client history, expandPreviousResponseInput cannot match the shortened cached prefix and prepends it instead. A reproducer using the real cache/selector functions retains two copies of the same provider-issued assistant message ID with the option on, versus one with it off. The checkpoint is duplicated too. Shrinking the current request’s replay boundary does not fix that next-turn comparison. Preserve the original cache representation and add a two-turn, full-client-replay regression test before enabling this projection. Verification: verified.

[P2] Being before the checkpoint does not establish that a request is completed or that its details were copied into the summary. This unconditionally removes active requests too (the existing fixture explicitly says B is active, then asserts OLD_B is absent). For an active B containing a unique specification path, followed by a summary that only says B remains active, the only specification reference disappears from the next model input. Preserve the retained text as historical source context and let the checkpoint determine status; do not mark all preceding requests completed. Add coverage where the active request contains requirements omitted from the summary. The opt-in prevents changing defaults but does not make an enabled continuation correct. Verification: verified.

Implemented the preservation-based revision in #7138: default-on historical framing before plaintext checkpoints, applied only to translated/routed prompts. Original request text and canonical replay/cache history stay intact; native OpenAI passthrough is unchanged. This reuses your checkpoint detector/context exclusions and credits Robin Bially via a Co-authored-by trailer. Offline evidence: 297 focused tests pass, including unfinished details omitted by the summary and repeated |
Summary
Fixes routed models redoing work after a compaction (follow-up to #6764 and #7003). The fix ships as an opt-in setting that is off by default.
After a compaction, Codex's replacement history is the recent user requests followed by one user message starting with
SUMMARY_PREFIX(codex-rsbuild_compacted_history). Routed remote compaction v1 returns the same shape throughbuildCompactV1Output. The retained requests are still plain imperative user text, and routed models (Claude in particular) pick the oldest one and redo it, although the checkpoint reports it as finished. The #7003 continuation note does not reach this case: it fires only for decoded
ocx1:items, while Design B remote compaction v1 and client-side compaction both produce a plaintextSUMMARY_PREFIXcheckpoint. The #7003 review also showed that a prompt line alone did not move Haiku. This PR adds
compactionDropRetainedRequests(boolean, absent = off):src/responses/compaction-retained-requests.ts: a pure selector that removes plain-text user requests in front of the latest plaintext checkpoint. It keeps the checkpoint, earlier checkpoints, contextual wrappers (<environment_context>,# AGENTS.md,# Context from my IDE), user messages with images or files, assistant and tool items, and everything after the checkpoint. It is a no-op for inputs withcompaction_trigger, for opaque native blobs and for decodedocx1:items.src/server/responses/request-prepare.ts: applies the selector to the raw body before parsing (dropRetainedRequestsInBody), next to the existing spawn-message rewrite, so translated adapters and the native passthrough see the same input. A replayedprevious_response_idprefix shrinks by the removed items inside it (shrinkPreviousResponseReplayPrefix), so the parser's prefix boundary still points at the first client-carried item.GET/PUT /api/settings(boolean only;falsedeletes the key; rollback on save failure)./api/settingsinstead of assuming the old value is still active; if that read fails too, the switch stays locked until Retry.docs-siteconfiguration section and table row, a new structure docstructure/transports/compaction-checkpoints.md(the three owning docs are at their 600-line budget, so they get one linking sentence each), and ADR-7105.Absent or
falseleaves every request byte-identical.Why removal and not another prompt line
These are manual replays of a fixed fixture (completed request A retained before the checkpoint, active task B recorded in it, mock tools only) through a Responses gateway to Claude Opus, Sonnet and Haiku. They are recorded here as motivation, not as test evidence:
A real Codex Desktop thread that switched GPT → Haiku → GPT → Sonnet → GPT across compactions and shell calls kept working with the change applied.
