Summary

  • Isolate the owner registry under the armed test-home guard: resolve an absent override beneath the selected OPENCODEX_HOME, reject protected-home paths before reads and mutations, and pin a fresh registry in both wrapped and preloaded test sandboxes. Production retains its shared default-home locator. Regression coverage includes child processes without an override, fixture switches, protected overrides, symlink aliases, and production resolution. This follows fix(test): isolate service state from the shared startup home #7161's selected-home isolation rule.
  • Carries fix(cli): refuse uncertain ownership before publishing sibling runtime #7119 (commit c5e17b50b2c3508d023c0ec560c7a1e2ca128812 by @fwkyle).
  • Refuse a new proxy start when cross-home ownership discovery returns an indeterminate verdict, before listener binding, runtime-port.json publication, or shared-client writes. Previously, an indeterminate probe (such as a transient discovery timeout or unverified listener on a managed loopback port) set the one-way process-lifetime sibling mark and allowed the new proxy to bind both its main and data-loopback ports while recording the loopback port as its sibling owner, permanently rejecting management mutations such as POST /api/sync with HTTP 409 sibling_instance until restart.
  • Keep proven cross-home owners marked as siblings and preserve existing same-home sibling recovery during owner downtime (markLiveHomeSibling).
  • Forward discovery options through markLiveHomeSibling and skip the developer's protected real ~/.opencodex default-home fallback when isProtectedHomeUnderTest is armed and no explicit homeDir is provided, so bare bun test runs do not read a live host runtime record when os.homedir() resolves to the real home.
  • Add regression coverage for exhausted discovery budget recovery and end-to-end startup refusal on unreadable or legacy ownership records, and update startup and ownership documentation.

Maintainer security review is required under MAINTAINERS.md for changes touching the startup ownership boundary. The change tightens fail-closed startup behavior and does not relax authentication, attestation, or management-route permissions.

Verification

Follow-up validation at 5a68b3c2f3039c692779e2aab31227d19e96f3af:

  • bun test tests/config/owner-registry-isolation.test.ts — 2 pass / 0 fail (25 assertions). The original code failed the guarded case before the fix.
  • bun test tests/config/owner-registry-isolation.test.ts tests/cli/sibling-home-client-sync.test.ts tests/cli/start-ownership-publication.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/test-runner.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts -t '^(?!a secondary ensure parent)' — 146 pass / 3 platform skips / 0 fail, 1,147 assertions.
  • The same focused command without the name filter failed the existing a secondary ensure parent preserves shared Grok, Codex and Claude agent bytes case at its 30-second deadline. That exact case also fails at unchanged 0774cef77 on this host (30-second timeout, child killed with exit 143).
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, and git diff --cached --check — passed after the final code changes.
  • bun run test:changed — failed: 37,974 pass / 110 skip / 21 fail / 4 errors, across 1,739 files (368 seconds). Failures include service-state/diagnostics and native integration toggles, three live-audio deadlines, and the existing ensure deadline. A six-file focused comparison on unchanged 0774cef77 also failed service SQLite-home binding and the same three live-audio deadlines (332 pass / 4 fail / 3 errors); the follow-up comparison had 329 pass / 7 fail / 3 errors. These comparisons establish existing failures but do not prove every broad-run failure is unrelated. The service-state isolation fix remains in fix(test): isolate service state from the shared startup home #7161.
  • Full exact-head cross-platform CI dispatched with gh workflow run ci.yml -R lidge-jun/opencodex --ref fix/7119-cross-home-owner -f lane=all: run 38742668610, workflow_dispatch, head 1c0a21be3 (origin/dev merged in to clear a test-layout.json union conflict; the earlier queued run 38741455584 on 5a68b3c was cancelled). Queued; not passing evidence yet. Both initial Ubuntu jobs have no assigned runner.
  • A separate unfiltered local full suite was not run because test:changed already selected 38,105 tests, and concurrent worktrees share this host. Cross-platform validation remains pending in the dispatched run. No merge was performed.

Earlier validation retained below (before this registry-isolation follow-up):

  • bun install — passed.
  • PATH="/Users/jun/.cache/rt284-bun/bun-darwin-aarch64:$PATH" bun test tests/cli/sibling-home-client-sync.test.ts — 34 pass / 0 fail (119 expect() calls).

  • PATH="/Users/jun/.cache/rt284-bun/bun-darwin-aarch64:$PATH" bun test tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/structure-ssot.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/repo-hygiene.test.ts — 103 pass / 0 fail (788 expect() calls).

  • PATH="/Users/jun/.cache/rt284-bun/bun-darwin-aarch64:$PATH" bun run typecheck — passed (tsc --noEmit).
  • PATH="/Users/jun/.cache/rt284-bun/bun-darwin-aarch64:$PATH" bun run structure:check — passed (structure/ SSOT checks passed).
  • PATH="/Users/jun/.cache/rt284-bun/bun-darwin-aarch64:$PATH" bun run privacy:scan — passed (Privacy scan passed).
  • cd docs-site && PATH="/Users/jun/.cache/rt284-bun/bun-darwin-aarch64:$PATH" bun install --frozen-lockfile && PATH="/Users/jun/.cache/rt284-bun/bun-darwin-aarch64:$PATH" bun run build — passed (577 pages built, 81,203 internal links checked).
  • git diff --check origin/dev...HEAD — passed.
  • Full bun run test was not run locally because multiple concurrent worktrees share this host; focused regression suites for cross-home ownership, startup publication, management sibling guards, and repository gates were run locally, and full cross-platform validation is left to GitHub Actions CI.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Startup now stops before binding or changing shared client settings when ownership of an existing managed destination cannot be verified. No new runtime is published in this case.
    • A failed ownership check does not permanently mark the new process as a secondary instance; a later start can retry discovery.
  • Documentation
    • The quickstart explains how to retry after connectivity recovers and notes that installed background services retry through their service manager.

📝 Walkthrough

Guarded test processes now isolate owner-registry access beneath the selected home. Cross-home startup now stops when ownership is indeterminate, without marking a sibling or publishing runtime state. Tests and documentation cover registry isolation, startup refusal, and retry behavior.

Changes: Cross-home ownership and test isolation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Owner-registry isolation in tests

Resolve the guarded registry beneath the selected config home when its override is absent. Pin the sandbox registry for inherited children and reject protected paths for reads and retirement as well as publication.

Owner Author

Maintainer integration into dev (MAINTAINERS.md dev maintainer-integration policy; batch integration authorized by @lidge-jun on 2026-10-15).

  • Head: 369ebf4019acd78eb07e0ea68083396810a7862b (tree 1efd7b534cc4233e62a546f04047ea8c8474284a) = this branch merged with origin/dev 9f09568435.
  • Exact-head evidence: GitHub-hosted Actions for this account have not been assigning runners since 2026-10-15 13:30 UTC, so by owner decision the evidence is a full bun run test (Bun 1.4.3 test runner, root and GUI dependencies installed, GUI built) of this exact tree on a maintainer host (macOS arm64): exit 1, 9 min, 4 failing test(s), each also failing in the same host's baseline run of dev 60bf4c7 (environment-only): a secondary ensure parent preserves shared Grok, Codex and Claude agent bytes, connected Desktop uses hub IDs across a cold restart (stored profile=false), live audio readiness and bounded closure > native open and non-readiness events cannot cla, update stops the running proxy before replacing files > npm launcher restarts the stopped .
  • Local gates on the same tree: bun run typecheck, file-size ratchet, test-layout and structure:check.
  • Hosted CI checks for this head may still be queued; they are not claimed as evidence.
