Summary

  • Carry @colthreepv's feat(pricing): support per-model prompt-length price overrides #6738 from source head f098a981d7e128da14322a3aa215408b6c9e889e onto dev 7640a942b35044c974e534b84d5a8049f4a8ae9a. Conflicting test inventories retain both branches' entries; structure docs retain dev's current topology and API-key reconciliation contracts.

  • Models → Price adds Automatic, Flat rate, and Custom threshold policies. Inclusive prompt tokens count cached reads/writes once and exclude output; selected rates price the entire request. Fast/Priority stack, exclusive, and lower-bound rules remain intact. Automatic Haiku overrides retain dev's >100K, 5× catalog bands.

  • Explicit pricing PUT/reset replaces one complete model row after reconciliation, preserving sibling rows and invalidating estimate caches. CLI base-rate edits carry the selected policy forward. Includes validation, receipts, all locale strings and user/structure documentation.

  • Review fixes preserve valid prompt-length policies during legacy OpenAI migration through pure shared validation, and keep the comparison menu inside the native modal.

Verification

Fix-round head: 207b886bf821c59bd424f200ae6bdaa36bfea763. Merged origin/dev (0b13396af41b66758322c857663e1214b4635379) into the carry branch with a normal merge; no rebase or force-push. Both correct findings are fixed and their review threads resolved.

All tests and proxy runs used isolated OPENCODEX_HOME and CODEX_HOME; the screenshot proxy used non-default port 17460. Backend commands below also used OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 for concurrent lanes and --parallel=1.

  • bun scripts/test.ts --parallel=1 tests/usage/usage-prompt-length-pricing.test.ts tests/usage/usage-haiku-5-5-pricing.test.ts tests/server/model-costs-prompt-length-pricing.test.ts tests/server/model-costs-pricing-cache.test.ts tests/providers/provider-cost-overlay-config.test.ts tests/config/config-load-degrade.test.ts tests/adapters/openai/openai-provider-option-migration.test.ts tests/adapters/openai/openai-provider-option-startup.test.ts tests/lab/core-lab-boundary.test.ts — 330 pass, 0 fail, 9 files. Includes legacy policy migration, strict malformed-policy rejection, key rewriting, idempotence, unchanged input, and a subprocess CLI initialization regression.
  • bun scripts/test.ts --parallel=1 tests/cli/cli-models-prompt-length-pricing.test.ts tests/cli/cli-models-price.test.ts tests/usage/user-cost-overlay-live-reconcile.test.ts tests/usage/user-cost-overlay-coderabbit-regressions.test.ts tests/usage/user-cost-overlay-provider-delete.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts — 50 pass, 0 fail, 6 files.
  • bun scripts/test.ts --parallel=1 tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts tests/cli/cli-models-prompt-length-pricing.test.ts tests/cli/cli-models-price.test.ts — 61 pass, 0 fail, 5 files. The file-size ratchet was also rerun successfully after the validator extraction in the command above.
  • cd gui && bun ../scripts/test-with-pinned-bun.ts --isolate --timeout 30000 tests/model-price-cost.test.ts tests/models-price-editor.test.tsx — 27 pass, 0 fail. The new test verifies that the comparison listbox is inside the modal, selection dismisses it, and focus returns to the trigger.
  • cd gui && bun ../scripts/test-with-pinned-bun.ts --isolate --timeout 30000 tests — 3344 pass, 0 fail, all 343 GUI test files on the final code.
  • Regression RED evidence: the four valid legacy policy variants failed with OpenAiTierMigrationCollisionError before the migration change; the modal test failed with Expected: true / Received: false because the listbox had no dialog ancestor. Both pass after the fixes. The initial validator-registry import also exposed an initialization cycle in a CLI subprocess; the new startup regression failed before the pure-module extraction and passes after it. The intermediate full-GUI run loaded the old cyclic import in eight files; those same eight files passed 150/150 on clean origin/dev, and the complete final GUI run above passes after extraction.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run lint:gui, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, git diff --check, git diff --cached --check — passed. The generated structure index includes the pure validator module.
  • cd gui && bunx react-doctor@0.9.11 . --scope changed --base origin/dev --blocking warning --no-supply-chain -y — 100/100, no issues found, exit 0.
  • bun run build:gui — passed (existing bundle-size warning). cd docs-site && bun install --frozen-lockfile && bun run build — passed, 577 pages / 81,227 internal links.
  • node /tmp/shot-fix-7160/capture.mjs — passed against the real packaged GUI: listbox is inside the native modal; pointer selection, persisted gte after save/reopen, and keyboard selection work. /Applications/Google Chrome.app launch timed out at 15s; the capture used the installed Chrome headless shell 154.0.8037.92. Screenshots are stored only on pr-assets.
  • Full backend suite / test:changed were not rerun this fix round because of concurrent worktree resource contention. Focused pricing, config load, migration/startup, CLI, reconciliation, layout, and core-boundary coverage is recorded above; cross-platform/full backend coverage remains with CI. No unrun suite is claimed passing.
  • Exact-head cross-platform CI: https://github.com/lidge-jun/opencodex/actions/runs/38735021950 — queued, not passing evidence. Older dispatches 38732438460 and 38714066464 were cancelled/superseded. The PR remains ready for review; it has not been merged.

Before (dev, existing baseline):

Before: base-rate pricing dialog

After (fixed comparison menu inside the modal):

After: comparison options inside the native modal

After: saved inclusive threshold reopened

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. Reviewed the pricing validation/display/persistence boundaries; no authentication or permission expansion.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added model pricing options for automatic catalog rules, flat rates, or custom rates selected by a prompt-token threshold. Custom rates apply to the whole request, with applicable Fast and Priority adjustments.
    • Added controls to configure these options in the model pricing dialog.
    • Updated CLI price reporting and editing to include saved pricing policies while preserving them when base rates change.
  • Documentation

    • Expanded provider, CLI, and management API guidance for pricing modes, thresholds, validation, and reset behavior.
    • Clarified that pricing overrides affect displayed estimates, not upstream billing.

Port f098a98 onto dev 7640a94, retaining current topology/API-key reconciliation and test inventory entries.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds automatic, flat, and custom prompt-length pricing policies to model-cost overlays. It updates configuration validation and persistence, CLI price operations, usage estimates, and the pricing dialog. Documentation and tests cover policy behavior across these paths.

Changes: Prompt-length pricing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Policy types, validation, and persistence
src/types/provider.ts, src/types.ts, src/usage/user-cost-overlays.ts, src/config/schema/leaf-validators.ts, src/config/live-reconcile.ts, src/server/management/model-routes.ts, tests/server/model-costs-prompt-length-pricing.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/management-api.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/*/reference/configuration/providers.md, structure/pricing.md, structure/*
ProviderCostOverlay supports an optional policy. Validation, display sanitization, management API persistence, and live reconciliation handle policy rows and resets. Tests cover policy validation, persistence, reconciliation, and failure cases.
CLI price operations
src/cli/models-runtime.ts, tests/cli/cli-models-price.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-models-prompt-length-pricing.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/cli/providers-accounts.md
Price reads accept policies while effectiveCost reports base rates. Manual rate updates preserve the target model’s saved policy, and receipt checks compare policies.
Usage estimate pricing and cache behavior
src/usage/cost.ts, src/usage/expected-prices.ts, tests/usage/usage-prompt-length-pricing.test.ts, tests/server/model-costs-pricing-cache.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
Estimates apply flat and custom policies alongside catalog context pricing. Custom threshold selection counts prompt input and cache tokens, and estimate results expose when custom rates apply. Tests cover Priority behavior, per-attempt Combo pricing, and cache refresh after policy writes.
Pricing dialog and localized controls
gui/src/components/ModelPriceDialog.tsx, gui/src/components/model-price-cost.ts, gui/src/components/model-price-dialog.css, gui/src/i18n/*.ts, gui/tests/model-price-cost.test.ts, gui/tests/models-price-editor.test.tsx
The dialog supports automatic, flat, and custom modes, validates draft values, and checks policy data in receipts. Localized strings describe the controls and validation, and tests cover editing, saving, reopening, and resetting policies.

Reuse pure shared model-cost validators during OpenAI tier migration, preserve valid policies, and retain strict rejection of malformed rows. Keep the pricing comparison menu inside the native dialog and cover policy migration, CLI initialization, and modal selection regressions.
