Summary

Closes #7307. Running Codex tools can outlive Anthropic's short cache TTL; image pressure can repeatedly change old image bytes or stop a turn instead of compacting complete old context.

confirmed five-minute prefix + verified running own turn → optional renewal at 270s
ended / unknown / expired → stop
26 MiB image base64 / final JSON limit / recoverable image 413
→ summarize complete old units once → keep newest image unit → continue same turn
  • Keep compatible tool/system/history prefixes and stable historical image bytes across append/retry. Generic reasoning replay identity and signature-rejection memo behavior stay identical to dev; renewal and image checkpoints use their own request-owner evidence.
  • Add anthropicCacheRenewal, default off, only for compatible five-minute requests on verified running main/child turns. Natural confirmations replace the timer. Bounded retries stay inside confirmed lifetime. Explicit retention and dev's first-party one-hour default remain authoritative. Configured root/identity/pool token ceilings disable detached renewal.
  • At 26 MiB of image base64 or 32,000,000 bytes of final JSON, compact complete old units under verified ownership and reuse the checkpoint. The shared native Messages allowance is also 26 MiB; its existing image tiers and other processing remain unchanged.
  • An upstream image 413 with compactable old images can perform one bounded compaction/retry on direct, search and media paths. Release the refused response before summarizing; share the original send budget and cancellation. Repeated 413, image-free requests, unverified ownership, exhausted budget or an oversized newest unit do not trigger repeated summaries or degraded historical uploads.
  • Build on upstream fix(anthropic): preserve cache prefixes during routed compaction (#7307) #7749, which already carries routed-summary tool/system preservation and summary validation. Retain its original-choice catalog construction, final wire prohibition for hosted or mandatory tools, and native-summary sidecar bypass. The remaining changes are renewal and image-pressure recovery.

No native Codex patch, installed-runtime change, default background spend, credential migration or CI policy change. Image work reimplements and extends closed, unmerged #4549; attribution is retained below and in branch history.

Evidence

Contract Before / after Boundary
Running-state renewal Offline real-shape large lifecycle records and entry tests cover main/child ownership, 270s renewal, natural replacement, ended/unknown/expired states, cancellation and bounded retries. Disabled mode starts no watcher or renewal. Provider zero-output support, credential ownership and actual savings still require maintainer acceptance. Cancellation after a committed send is not zero cost.
Stable prefixes Upstream #7749 now owns routed-summary prefix preservation. The remaining prefix/image tests cover stable historical bytes, compatible breakpoints and renewal of the actual sent request. The unchanged upstream regression file checks its carried behavior. Necessary compaction makes a new prefix; this does not promise a provider hit on that new prefix.
Image pressure and continuation Four focused upstream-image-413 fixtures failed before this correction. The full entry suite now passes 88/88, including direct/search/media recovery with renewal off/on, streaming/non-streaming, a one-slot pacing lease, newest-image retention and checkpoint replay. One forced recovery only. Repeated refusal, text-only input, cancellation, invalid summary, exhausted budget and irreducible newest context are checked separately.
Unrelated original behavior 8 generic replay/rejection source, documentation and test files are byte-identical to integrated dev. The previous scope-cleanup head passed 299/299 original replay/signature/native compaction/module tests; those historical receipts are not new-head reruns. The added generic replay-identity migration and its parent-compatibility/memo follow-ups are withdrawn. Two tests introduced by that withdrawn branch were removed with it; dev's original assertions are restored unchanged.

All fixtures are synthetic and offline. No production conversation, screenshot, credential or raw usage log is committed; no paid model request was used. Historical unattributed low-hit requests remain unattributed. Rare-scenario natural acceptance is not claimed.

Verification

Current candidate: 3f67ee4a49d09f8ddb374955496d964dafc4fb8c, integrated once with fixed dev baseline 42549ba1b00a7fe792f0c1d87771845ca538c472 to resolve the newly reported conflict. The only manual conflict resolution keeps both cache-lifecycle and provider test shards, without changing their values, loaders or assertions. The overview has 599 lines, within its unchanged 600-line cap. No manual runtime changes were added. Upstream structural tool-turn interfaces and seven protected runtime/test files remain byte-identical to the fixed dev baseline. Relative to this baseline, the PR covers 60 paths. The eight withdrawn replay/signature branch files and .github/workflows/ci.yml are byte-identical to integrated dev. The image allowance remains 26 MiB.

Exact-head full hosted CI passed: unchanged ci.yml, workflow_dispatch, lane=all, run 40486385953. 28 jobs succeeded; 7 skipped jobs are not passes. All nine Windows shards, four Linux shards, three macOS shards, the macOS control and aggregate ci gate succeeded. Fork success does not replace required upstream CI or independent runtime/security review. Fork Actions was disabled after completion; run evidence remains available.

Current-head offline validation on Windows, pinned Bun 1.4.4, matching the fixed baseline:

  • bun test tests/responses/responses-anthropic-cache-lifecycle-entry.test.ts: 88 passed, 0 failed.
  • The existing nine-file cache/image group (abort guards, writer-lock runtime records, cache prefixes, renewal, image guard/normalization/retry and account-origin coverage): 170 passed, 0 failed.
  • bun test --timeout 30000 tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts: 29 passed, 0 failed. No source, assertion or upstream timeout was modified.
  • bun test tests/providers/command-code-plan-denial.test.ts: 21 passed, 0 failed. This checks that the automatically merged sidecar refusal path remains intact.
  • Native compact citation integration: 29 passed, 0 failed.
  • Manual compaction integration in a separate process with the existing CI budget: 76 passed, 0 failed.
  • Upstream's forged sibling-env regression: 1 passed, 0 failed. Combo cooldown and compaction integration: 19 passed, 0 failed.
  • Upstream's unchanged compaction-prefix regression file: 29 passed, 0 failed.
  • bun run typecheck, bun scripts/privacy-scan.ts, bun scripts/structure-ssot.ts, and bun scripts/file-size-ratchet.ts passed. Both the complete merge diff and scoped git diff --check passed.
  • Automatically merged reasoning interfaces: Anthropic wire 91 passed, Responses parser 100 passed, and effort policy 49 passed, all with 0 failures.

The unchanged provider-input modalities and vision eligibility files passed42 and10 tests. Upstream structural tool-turn membership, ingress, parallel stream and admission identity files passed134 tests without source/assertion/timeout changes.

Full-suite exception (AGENTS.md, Commands): a complete local suite is not claimed. The bounded local checks above passed 888 tests; broad cross-platform coverage comes from the exact-head full hosted workflow. Live natural acceptance and combined lifecycle/retention owner acceptance remain outstanding.

This delivery fixes one frozen baseline. Unrelated subsequent dev commits do not cause another pre-publication merge/rerun. A real new conflict is handled as a bounded author task. The maintainer's explicit Draft hold remains in force.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way. Revert the feature commits; no transcript or configuration migration is required.

Blast Radius: Anthropic and shared Responses observation/provenance. Renewals and summaries may be billed. Reliable IPC is required; the local writer-lock fallback supports Windows and fails closed elsewhere. Credential-pinned detached transport, hosted-tool prohibition, summary persistence, final byte limits and newest-image semantics need explicit security/runtime acceptance.

The PR remains Draft under the maintainer's explicit intake. Current fork validation and old-head review receipts do not waive that hold or approve the whole PR.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Privacy checks passed; security acceptance remains a maintainer action.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.
  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).
  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.
  • My PR is ready for review.

…e compaction

Preserve own-thread replay identity and stable historical image bytes. Compact
old complete history units at local image/request limits without executing
tools, and resume using an owner-bound bounded checkpoint.

Offer default-off running-turn renewal for compatible five-minute caches,
using confirmed prefixes, early natural usage, bounded retries and verified
main/child runtime state. Keep existing cache retention choices unchanged.

Add redacted request correlation, synthetic offline entry/runtime regressions
and public configuration/structure documentation.

Walkthrough

The change adds opt-in Anthropic cache renewal for verified Codex turns, stable image encoding, and local image-history compaction when request limits are reached. It also adds request-origin diagnostics, Codex runtime checks, and tests and documentation for these changes.

Changes: Anthropic Cache Lifecycle

The default-off setting gates renewal. Valid usage confirms a cache snapshot, and the manager schedules bounded renewal attempts while the Codex turn remains active. Response wrappers preserve usage observation. Request-origin records capture sanitized metadata; tests cover timing, eligibility, identity, and logging.
Stable Anthropic image encoding and wire limits

Anthropic image encoding no longer varies with image age, retry bias, or aggregate pressure. The adapter checks image count, dimensions, aggregate base64 size, and serialized request size. Updated tests expect upstream 413 responses without lossy image retries.
Image-history compaction and prefix-preserving summaries

When image limits require recovery, Responses handling summarizes an eligible older prefix at complete tool boundaries, validates the result, and checkpoints it for reuse. Anthropic routed compaction preserves its tool and system prefix, and summary output is rejected when it is empty, incomplete, or attempts tools.

Image-heavy Anthropic conversations sent through Chat Completions, Messages, or clients without a thread ID now fail with 413 instead of dropping old images and continuing. When opt-in cache renewal is enabled, non-streaming turns that need a continuation can fail to parse. Renewal requests are also not counted against configured spend ceilings. Fix the image fallback and continuation parsing before merging.

Explanation

The PR addresses the coding requirements in #7307. src/server/responses/response-effects.ts preserves the Anthropic compaction tool and system prefix and sets toolChoice to none for hosted server tools. src/responses/compaction-summary.ts and the referenced delivery path reject tool attempts and invalid summaries. src/server/responses/anthropic-image-context.ts tests the serialized request limit, compacts only complete old units, retains the newest unit, binds checkpoints to the provider owner, and reuses valid checkpoints. src/adapters/anthropic-image-normalize.ts and src/adapters/anthropic-image-guard.ts preserve image bytes and perform non-mutating limit checks. src/anthropic/cache-renewal.ts, src/anthropic/cache-renewal-runtime.ts, and the Codex runtime-state modules implement default-off, owner-bound renewal with five-minute expiry, running-turn checks, and stop handling for ended or unknown turns. The listed focused tests cover these behaviors, and the reported typecheck passed.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Most changes support #7307, including request-origin diagnostics, own-thread identity, cache observation propagation, structure documentation, and focused regression tests. However, structure/transports/responses.md also changes the /v1/* routing documentation to state that unknown paths return JSON 404 errors instead of falling through to GUI static serving. The routing behavior is not connected to cache-prefix preservation, image compaction, or running-turn renewal. This is a demonstrated unrelated documentation change.

Resolution

Remove the unrelated unknown-path routing documentation change from structure/transports/responses.md. Keep the Anthropic cache-lifecycle documentation in that file.

Owner

Intake at 14c961c6b2; #7307 remains open. Please make prefix preservation independently reviewable from opt-in renewal and automatic in-flight image summarization. They have different acceptance boundaries: an unchanged sent prefix must survive ordinary compaction/image handling even with renewal disabled; renewal needs exact running-turn ownership, no request after ended/unknown state, cancellation and a stated upstream/cost contract; recovery must preserve complete call/result units and newest image semantics under the final serialized-byte limit. The shared request-origin/runtime-state and transport changes make this more than a cache-marker patch. Keep Draft while owner/runtime review and exact-head functional CI are outstanding. I did not run real turns, synthetic renewals, scans or modify client transcripts.

The managed readiness checklist is now complete on 7e2f8cf; the repository gate marked this PR Ready for Review and added review-ready.

The follow-up changes tests only: own-thread identity in recovery fixtures (including a parent-only non-sharing check), expectations for no lossy 413 retry, and asynchronous fixture teardown. The directly related groups pass 107 + 140 tests, with typecheck, privacy and file-size checks passing. The description retains the full scope exception: the broad Windows import-graph run hit 900 seconds / exit 124 and is not claimed green.

Remaining maintainer actions before merge:

  1. Approve the current-head fork workflow runs: Cross-platform CI, Catalog async contracts, and React Doctor currently report action_required. My account has no repository write/maintain permission.
  2. Review the credential-pinned, default-off renewal transport and hosted-tool prohibition. The security-review checkbox remains open for that review; Ready does not imply security approval or merge approval.

No live paid model requests were used for validation.

src/server/responses/adapter-continuation.ts:684-695
🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The continuation loop still runs the Anthropic image-tier retry, so each 413 continuation is resent once unchanged.

  • This PR turned off the Anthropic image-tier retry in the main recovery loop: adapter-dispatch.ts Line 1759 now checks transportState.activeAdapter.name !== "anthropic".
  • It also stopped passing imageTierBias to normalizeAnthropicImages (src/adapters/anthropic.ts Lines 1034–1036).
  • This continuation branch still calls shouldAttemptImageTierRetry, which returns true only for adapterName === "anthropic" (src/server/image-retry.ts Lines 38–41).
  • It then sets imageTierBias = 1 and rebuilds. The Anthropic adapter now ignores the bias, so the rebuild is byte-identical to the rejected request.
  • Result: every Anthropic 413 continuation re-uploads the same body (up to 32 MB) once before it fails.

Apply the same adapter exclusion here.

I missed your explicit instruction to keep this Draft pending runtime-owner review and exact-head functional CI. Completing the automatic four-box gate did not satisfy that request; I have restored Draft and left the final readiness confirmation unchecked.

I separated the three acceptance contracts in the description and added one directly missing regression receipt: image-count recovery now runs with renewal disabled and enabled. Both modes retain the tool/system prefix and newest image result and reuse the summary checkpoint. Disabled mode additionally advances to 270 seconds and asserts no zero-output request and no runtime watcher. The ordinary compaction prefix test already uses an empty config, independently of renewal.

The updated prefix/lifecycle-entry/native-runtime group passes 90 tests, 0 failures; typecheck, file-size ratchet and diff checks pass. This follow-up changes a test only. Existing byte-stability, ended/unknown/expired-turn, cancellation and retry receipts remain separate; their earlier results are not represented as a fresh full run. The broad Windows run's 900-second timeout and unclassified partial failures remain disclosed.

Current-head fork CI still needs maintainer approval. Could you approve the functional workflows and review the runtime-owner/transport boundary? I will keep Draft until your intake conditions are met or you explicitly accept the focused-validation exception for review. I have not claimed real-provider zero-output support, live acceptance or cost savings, and have not sent paid model validation requests.

[P1] Parse renewal-enabled continuation responses using their actual wire format.

At 62a53c2, src/server/responses/adapter-continuation.ts:293-295 now attaches the natural renewal scope, so src/anthropic/cache-renewal-runtime.ts:100-103 forces eligible upstream requests to SSE. The continuation parser at adapter-continuation.ts:729-734 still selects parseResponse from nextParsed.stream === false; Anthropic's parseResponse reads JSON. A non-stream caller therefore loses a valid continuation when the upstream body is SSE. The initial delivery path already uses the response content type to handle this distinction.

I independently reproduced the existing bot finding using the PR's offline entry harness, with all real connections denied: a non-stream HTTP request, emptyCompletionRetry: true, a function tool (web-search sidecar disabled), an empty first completion and a valid text completion on the second upstream call. With anthropicCacheRenewal: false, two sends produce status: completed and the expected text. Changing only renewal to true still performs two sends but produces status: failed, empty_completion_retry_failed, and no answer. The paired expected-success regression is 1 pass / 1 fail. This is an observed public request failure, not just a parser-shape concern.

Please select continuation parsing from the actual upstream content type/stream contract, preserving the inactivity guard and cache-usage observer, and add this paired entry regression with renewal enabled and disabled. Cover the terminal-guard continuation path using the same parser as well.

The existing four focused lifecycle/prefix/runtime-record files pass independently (139 tests, Bun 1.4.3, Linux, isolated homes and capped cgroup). They do not cover this failure. Full-suite, current-head typecheck and live provider/cross-platform acceptance remain outside this local evidence; required current-head CI and trust-boundary review are still needed. No fork workflow or new scan was started in this review.

The review follow-up is pushed. The three contracts remain separately described; this PR stays Draft under the maintainer's intake request.

  • Fixed the non-stream/SSE continuation parser and the outside-diff Anthropic 413 continuation resend. Direct handleResponses regressions reproduce the previous failures; 413 previously sent three requests instead of two.
  • Detached renewal stops when a root, identity or pool token ceiling is configured, including a ceiling added after confirmation. It does not bypass the limit or pretend to reserve the original workflow budget.
  • Successful image summaries no longer get a failure code. Fixed missing body-byte arguments in tests, switched the image-recovery crypto calls to Bun/Web APIs, and documented Windows-only renewal support.
  • 211 lifecycle/image tests + 85 adjacent tests pass, alongside typecheck, privacy, file-size, structure and diff checks. Documentation build passes with 577 pages and 81,463 checked links. The previously disclosed broad-run timeout remains unresolved; a full-suite pass is not claimed.

Two safety/compatibility points are left for maintainer disposition: I retained rejection of EOF summaries without a normal stop reason rather than inventing end_turn, and retained explicit overflow refusal for ownerless callers rather than silently deleting historical images. Their inline replies explain the tradeoffs; finding-resolution and final readiness confirmations remain unchecked.

Please approve the current-head functional workflows and review runtime ownership/transport. No native Codex or local installed version was changed and no paid provider validation requests were sent.

The P1 continuation finding in your review is fixed, and I added the requested paired entry matrix:

Non-stream HTTP client Renewal off Renewal on
Empty-completion retry completed, expected answer, 2 sends completed, expected answer, 2 sends
Terminal-guard continuation completed, expected answer, 2 sends completed, expected answer, 2 sends

The test enters handleResponses, disables the search sidecar, and returns JSON or SSE according to the actual upstream request. The fix uses response content type in the shared continuation parser and retains the inactivity wrapper and cache observer. Before the fix the direct renewal-enabled empty retry failed; the image-bearing 413 continuation also made three sends rather than two.

Latest lifecycle/image run: 214 passed, 0 failed across 8 files. The preceding 85 adjacent continuation/empty-completion tests and typecheck/privacy/structure/documentation checks remain applicable because this last commit changes only the paired test fixture; file-size and diff checks were rerun. All connections are denied outside the fake upstream. No live paid validation was used.

CodeRabbit has acknowledged the parser/spend/logging/documentation fixes and withdrawn the EOF and ownerless-image fallback recommendations. Those withdrawals are not a substitute for your runtime-owner, compatibility or current-head functional CI review. The PR remains Draft awaiting your review and workflow approval; I have not dismissed your changes-requested review.

Re-review at 7e09e8b: the continuation parser now uses Anthropic's actual response content type while retaining the inactivity wrapper and observer. The requested non-stream empty-retry and terminal-guard matrices with renewal off/on are included. I independently ran the four focused cache lifecycle/prefix/runtime-record files at this head: 149 passed, 0 failed (Linux/Bun 1.4.3, fresh homes, capped cgroup). This resolves the concrete failure in review 5563307655, which I am withdrawing.

The separate no-lossy-image and detached-renewal contracts still require the recorded broader runtime/ownership review and current-head functional CI. I have retained Draft and have not approved fork workflows, dispatched paid calls or started a new scan. The withdrawal closes my specific continuation blocker; it is not a whole-PR approval.

@Ingwannu
Ingwannu dismissed their stale review October 19, 2026 04:26

Concrete non-stream/SSE continuation blocker fixed at 7e09e8b; paired empty/terminal continuation controls are present and 149 focused tests independently pass. Separate whole-PR runtime/ownership review and current-head functional CI remain outstanding.

Reconciled this branch with dev 880127dbd356c720779222a14a97c11adc8cf881. The latest conflict was only the test layout's explicit shard roster; both upstream's chat shard and this PR's cache-lifecycle shard are retained. The preceding integration likewise retained both independent fixture registrations. Runtime changes merged without a manual business-code patch or new behavior.

The diff against new dev still contains exactly the same 62 paths. The eight withdrawn replay/rejection source/doc/test files remain byte-identical to new dev, and the explicitly requested 26 MiB allowance remains. No identity-migration, parent-fallback or rejection-memo branch was reintroduced.

Current merge db134eedde9b7be1e0eb9101d35d0950a44a1d0a passes 115 offline tests: lifecycle entry 88 and test-layout guards 27, with zero failures. Typecheck, privacy, structure, file-size and whitespace checks pass. The prior 303/648-test receipts remain historical; a local full suite, live natural acceptance and real-provider savings are not claimed.

Exact-head hosted validation passed: original release-gates run 39869279388, 18 successful executed jobs including all three macOS test shards; eight lane exclusions/skips are not counted as passes. Previous candidate results remain historical. Observed dev f210595 is nine commits ahead of the integrated baseline. I am publishing this validated head instead of repeatedly merging a moving tip before each publication. Any remaining integration conflict is recorded separately; this does not claim the branch is ready to merge. The PR remains Draft under the explicit maintainer hold; fork success does not replace current upstream required CI or combined lifecycle/retention owner acceptance. No installed runtime was changed or restarted, no paid model validation was sent, and no CI policy was changed by this PR.

Triage note (2026-10-24, against dev at 2494848).

Needs fixes before this can land: resolve current dev conflicts, accommodate the capped provider document, and establish upstream functional CI on the resulting head, including ci.yml lane=all for Windows IPC/FFI writer-lock behavior. Preserve Draft until independent runtime/security review and owner acceptance cover credential pinning, billed renewal, retention and image-summary publication.

Still needed on dev: yes at 2494848f56. Routed compaction still deletes tools (src/server/responses/response-effects.ts:89–95); image normalization remains age-tiered (src/adapters/anthropic-image-normalize.ts:86–88), and aggregate overflow still textifies images (src/adapters/anthropic-image-guard.ts:248–260). The current allowance is 20 MiB (src/adapters/anthropic-image-guard.ts:45), versus this PR’s proposed 26 MiB.

Exact-head CI at triage time: db134ee — upstream functional CI missing. Rollup: 10 success, 2 cancelled (label, enforce-target); successful checks cover metadata/CodeRabbit, not functional execution. No pending checks or failed checks shown. Exact-head fork release-gates passed (run 39869279388), but Windows shards were skipped. lane=all on exact head: no.

Please refresh onto current dev when addressing these; heads older than dev need a fresh exact-head CI run before review.

Addressing the author-side requests in #issuecomment-6378339452: the fixed candidate is now 2163d2aa2a02bb151d37ae36068801b5e0ab5193, integrated with the requested dev baseline ceef4889e4666dc0492a375d272eafa5b785361e. Both test registrations are retained and the provider overview remains at its unchanged 600-line cap.

The original, unchanged ci.yml completed successfully with lane=all on this exact head: run 40066154540. 28 jobs succeeded, including Windows 1–9, Linux 1–4, macOS 1–3, macOS control and the aggregate gate; six skips are not passes. The PR body distinguishes this hosted result from mixed supplemental local runs.

Scope remains running-state cache renewal and image-pressure compaction/continuation at 26 MiB. The eight withdrawn generic replay/signature branch files and the CI workflow are unchanged from the integrated baseline. The fork Actions entrance has been disabled after validation; run records remain available.

Please authorize/run the required upstream functional CI for this exact head, including lane=all. Fork success is supporting evidence only. This PR remains Draft pending the requested independent runtime/security and combined lifecycle/retention review and owner acceptance. No Ready transition or merge is requested by this update.

Resolved the new conflict against fixed dev 0aeaf0c and published 5130c28. The manual merge keeps both documentation changes; no runtime behavior or withdrawn replay scope was added. The image allowance stays 26 MiB.

Local checks: 285 tests and four static gates passed. Exact-head original ci.yml lane=all passed: run 40109279689, 28 successful jobs and 6 skips, including all Windows shards and macOS control. Fork Actions is closed again.

Please approve and establish the required upstream functional CI on this head, including lane=all. Keeping Draft for the independent runtime/security and combined lifecycle/retention review and owner acceptance.

Preserve the upstream Command Code plan-refusal documentation and this PR's stable Anthropic image policy. No manual runtime logic changes.

Validate the merge with Bun 1.4.4: 308 focused tests and four static gates
passed. Keep the 26 MiB budget and withdrawn replay changes unchanged.

The new conflict is resolved in candidate 808c98b, against fixed dev 323a5e1. The only manual resolution keeps both provider-document changes. The document remains 599 lines, the PR still covers the same 62 paths, and the image allowance remains 26 MiB. Local Bun 1.4.4 validation passed 308 tests and four static gates. No manual runtime changes or withdrawn replay changes were added.

The original ci.yml lane=all run 40159149593 completed with failure: 25 successful jobs, 6 conditional skips, and 3 failed jobs. The failures are Windows 5/9, Windows 9/9 and their aggregate ci gate; no other job failed. All jobs remain part of this single attempt.

Windows 5/9 failed at tests/ci-workflows/test-runner.test.ts:378: the PowerShell known-folder child was expected to exit with 0, but its exit code was null after 30,085.55 ms. This failed before the test checked the returned folder path.

Comparison evidence:

  • The test, scripts/test.ts, scripts/test-run-lock.ts, and src/codex/user-identity.ts are byte-identical between this candidate and fixed dev 323a5e1.
  • With Bun 1.4.4, the exact test passed once on a pristine detached 323a5e1 control and once on the candidate, without changing assertions or timeouts. This does not reproduce or explain the hosted timeout, and it is not a passing full-suite control.
  • No job was retried and no additional candidate run was dispatched. Fork Actions was disabled after the full run finished, and the disabled state was read back. The run and logs remain available.

A second completed shard, Windows 9/9, failed in tests/cli/cli-start-journal-order.test.ts: "a direct start cannot claim sibling status with only a forged port env". It timed out waiting for the sibling runtime record before reaching the sibling-identity assertion.

The exact test also fails on pristine fixed dev 323a5e1: 0 pass / 1 fail, with the same "timed out waiting for sibling runtime record" result. The candidate control is also 0 pass / 1 fail at that step. The test, CLI entry, process-state and sibling-start/handoff modules, and service state-record module are byte-identical. The local watchdog differs from the hosted Windows watchdog; neither timeout nor assertion was changed. This reproduces the waiting-stage failure on the unmodified base, but does not establish why the child failed to publish its record or exclude every startup-graph interaction.

Please state whether you want an upstream repair, documented acceptance of these limitations, or further evidence. I am holding the candidate off the PR branch while full CI is failing. No unrelated sandbox or CLI repair, timeout change, or assertion change was added. The PR remains Draft; independent runtime/security review and owner acceptance are still required.

Update, October 26: upstream merged the sibling-port fixture repair. The repaired exact test passes on pristine dev and the candidate under the repository's existing CI watchdog. The PowerShell timeout root cause remains unknown; upstream dev's Windows 5/9 job has successful hosted evidence.

Candidate ab77111 integrates fixed dev 852bf9d and resolves a new test-layout conflict by preserving both cache-lifecycle and combo shards. No manual runtime changes were added. The PR still covers 62 paths, the provider document has 599 lines, and the image allowance stays 26 MiB. Bun 1.4.4 passed 433 focused tests and four static gates. Initial direct invocations with shorter non-CI deadlines failed; separate candidate checks with the existing CI budget passed. The pristine-dev manual-compaction control exceeded its wrapper budget after a test-lock wait and partial execution, so it is not claimed as a passing full control. The raw failures remain recorded.

The concrete upstream repair and this actual conflict justify one new exact-head original ci.yml lane=all run. This is not a retry of 808c98b. Full CI is still pending. The original PR branch remains 5130c28 until the new run passes. Fork Actions is temporarily enabled for this run and will be disabled at its terminal state, preserving logs. The Draft hold and independent owner review remain in force.

Preserve both upstream quota/citation documentation and this PR cache lifecycle
entries in the structure registry and test layout. No manual runtime changes.

Bun 1.4.4: 337 focused tests and four static gates passed. Preserve the
26 MiB image budget and withdrawn replay behavior. Full CI for this head
is not run; prior Windows baseline failures await maintainer disposition.
Resolve the test-layout registry conflict by keeping both upstream combo and
cache lifecycle shards. No manual runtime changes. Preserve the 26 MiB budget.

Use the upstream merged sibling-port fixture fix unchanged. Candidate checks
pass 433 focused tests and four static gates under the recorded local/CI
budgets. Preserve the initial shorter-budget failures and incomplete baseline
control. Full exact-head hosted CI remains required before PR publication.

Resolved the new conflict against fixed dev 852bf9d and published ab77111. The manual resolution keeps both the cache-lifecycle and upstream combo entries in the test-layout shard registry. No manual runtime changes or withdrawn replay scope were added. The image allowance stays 26 MiB.

Local checks: 433 tests and four static gates passed. Exact-head original ci.yml lane=all passed: run 40305084310, 28 successful jobs and 6 skips, including all Windows shards and macOS control. Fork Actions is closed again.

The previous 808c98b run failed two Windows tests. Upstream merged the sibling-port fixture fix unchanged in the upstream repair. The repaired exact test passes on both pristine dev and this candidate with the repository CI watchdog. The older PowerShell timeout root cause remains unknown; the unchanged upstream Windows 5/9 lane has successful hosted evidence. The initial direct local invocation used shorter non-CI deadlines and recorded failures; separate candidate checks under the existing CI budget all passed. The pristine-dev manual-compaction control exceeded its wrapper budget after a test-lock wait and partial execution, so it is not claimed as a passing full control. No assertions or repository timeouts were weakened.

Please approve and establish the required upstream functional CI on this head, including lane=all. Keeping Draft for the independent runtime/security and combined lifecycle/retention review and owner acceptance.

Routed Codex compaction on the Anthropic Messages adapter keeps the client tool catalog, system prompt and tool options byte-identical to the ordinary request so the prompt-cache prefix survives. Hosted server tools or a mandatory choice make the adapter send tool_choice none after building tools and system from the caller's choice; a summary guard drops tool events and fails tool-bearing or empty summaries. Image normalization and 413 recovery are unchanged. Refs #7307; partial carry of #7308.

Release triage for v2.93.0: the narrow compaction prefix-preservation part of this PR landed on dev as #7749 (squash 162beb3d1509291e52f808bd4f11e389bf17c06f), with a Co-authored-by trailer crediting you. It keeps tools, system and options on Anthropic routed summaries; hosted or mandatory choices send tool_choice: none only after tools and system are built, and a summary guard drops tool events.

The carry needed several fixes found in review. Changing the choice must not change the advertised catalog: allowed-tools, named-choice downgrades, hosted-tool collisions and the OAuth / escaped wire names all had to match. An Anthropic completion without stop_reason must stay valid. The final design lives in src/adapters/anthropic.ts behind _summaryProhibitsToolCalls.

Not carried, deferred until after the release, so this PR stays open for them: the optional running-turn renewal, the image-context recovery and size policy, and the sidecar refactor. Please rebase those onto current dev on top of #7749 when you pick this up.

Preserve upstream lidge-jun#7749 summary validation and final wire tool-choice ordering.
Keep the remaining running-turn renewal and 26 MiB image recovery paths.
Align owned entry tests with native-summary sidecar bypass and valid missing
stop_reason. Retain the upstream regression file and all failure boundaries.

Fixed candidate 911166c remains unpublished. Original full ci.yml lane=all run 40538108650 ended on attempt 1 with 24 successful jobs, 7 conditional skips, Windows 9/9 plus aggregate CI failing, and two macOS jobs cancelled. Fork Actions is now disabled and the evidence is retained. The earlier published 3f67ee4 and its successful full CI remain unchanged.

The Windows failures are both in unchanged tests/cli/cli-start-journal-order.test.ts:

  • The healthy-owner test expected Proxy already running but received a spend-ledger ownership refusal.
  • The sibling lifecycle test timed out in startOwner while waiting for the owner runtime record, before its sibling assertions.

I ran those two exact test names once on clean fixed dev e25be53 and once on 911166c, with pinned Bun 1.4.4, CI=true, bun test --timeout 60000 and separate temporary homes. Both trees failed 0/2 with matching local signals: the healthy-owner test received Proxy appeared before bind, and the sibling test reached a cross-home owner classification refusal. Those local failure stages differ from the hosted signals, so this is evidence of baseline failure in the same cases, not proof of the hosted root cause. Seventeen direct test/startup/ledger files match fixed dev byte-for-byte; the complete transitive startup graph is not ruled out.

Both macOS 1/3 and widget cancellation annotations state that no hosted runner acquired the job and cite macOS arm64 capacity constraints. Neither cancelled job is counted as passed. Other completed gates, including macOS control, remain recorded individually.

The subsequent upstream Desktop cold-start change affects handleEnsure after the failing direct-start/owner setup stages. I found no evidence that it fixes these failures, so I did not merge another dev tip or retry this workflow. No CLI, test assertion, timeout or CI policy was changed. Candidate checks for the two feature goals remain 985 focused passes and four static gates, with the 26 MiB allowance intact; the complete workflow has not passed.

Please specify the upstream fixture/startup fix or required hosted comparison, or explicitly confirm whether a Draft update with these baseline failures disclosed is acceptable. I am preserving the fixed candidate and failure evidence rather than expanding this PR into unrelated startup ownership work. The post-release Draft hold, independent runtime/security and combined lifecycle/retention review, and owner acceptance remain in force.

Keep the cache-lifecycle and upstream credit-renewal shard entries.
Retain upstream reasoning-interface changes without manual runtime edits.
The prior hosted CLI timeout remains pending maintainer disposition.

Resolved the new conflict against fixed dev d610ccc and published 707928e. The manual conflict resolution keeps both the cache-lifecycle and upstream credit-renewal entries in the test-layout shard registry. No manual runtime changes were added. The withdrawn replay scope remains absent. The image allowance stays 26 MiB.

Local checks: 702 tests and four static gates passed. Exact-head original ci.yml lane=all passed: run 40389160120, 28 successful jobs and 6 skips, including all Windows shards and macOS control. Fork Actions is closed again.

Upstream #7749 already carries the narrow summary prefix fix with attribution. This candidate preserves that implementation and integrates one actual shard-registry conflict without manual runtime edits. The prior d815e47 full run40331038659 failed CLI startup before identity assertions and four macOS jobs had hosted-runner capacity cancellations. Precise local controls passed on pristine b8ba848 and d815e47; the hosted startup cause remains unknown. Those old-head results remain historical evidence. This is the first full CI for this fixed candidate, not a rerun of d815e47; no assertions or repository timeouts were weakened.

Please approve and establish the required upstream functional CI on this head, including lane=all. Keeping Draft for the independent runtime/security and combined lifecycle/retention review and owner acceptance.

No manual runtime changes were added. The withdrawn replay scope remains absent. The image allowance stays 26 MiB.

Local checks: 754 tests and four static gates passed. Exact-head original ci.yml lane=all passed: run 40411518303, 28 successful jobs and 6 skips, including all Windows shards and macOS control. Fork Actions is closed again.

Upstream #7749 carries the narrow summary prefix fix with attribution. The unchanged upstream provider-modality tests passed 42 cases and vision eligibility passed 10 cases locally, in addition to the 702 focused regression tests and four static gates. No product-code edit, assertion change, repository-timeout change or further dev refresh was made.

Resolved the new conflict against fixed dev 4111e93 and published 37ba1ce. The manual fixture conflict resolution preserves every upstream registration and moves only the four PR-owned cache registrations from the shared insertion header to the existing Anthropic test group. Decoded key/value mappings are unchanged. No runtime, test-harness or assertion changes were added. The withdrawn replay scope remains absent. The image allowance stays 26 MiB.

Upstream #7749 carries the narrow summary prefix fix with attribution. The published dea2691 passed full original CI 40411518303 after one bounded Windows 3/9 retry; its initial unchanged offline npm startup fixture timeout and pristine-dev/candidate controls remain disclosed, with hosted cause unknown. This candidate integrates one actual fixture conflict against fixed dev 4111e93. Replaying the actual previous three-way fixture inputs showed a conflict before moving the four PR-owned entries and a clean merge afterward, with identical decoded mappings. This demonstrates only the observed shared-header insertion case, not every possible future conflict. Unchanged upstream provider-modality tests passed 42 cases and vision eligibility passed 10, within the 754 focused local tests. No further dev refresh, runtime edit, assertion change or repository-timeout change was made.

@lidge-jun, I need a concrete disposition for fixed conflict-resolution candidate 911166c, without repeatedly merging dev or rerunning unchanged failures.

The full lane=all run failed: 24 jobs succeeded, 7 were conditionally skipped, Windows 9/9 and the CI aggregate failed, and two macOS jobs were cancelled for hosted arm64 capacity. This is not a passing full run.

The two failures are in unchanged tests/cli/cli-start-journal-order.test.ts: healthy-owner classification and sibling owner startup. With Bun 1.4.4, CI=true, bun test --timeout 60000, the same two test names and separate temporary homes, clean fixed dev e25be53 and candidate 911166c each failed both cases. Seventeen direct test, startup and ledger files are identical between the trees. The paired local failures match each other but occur at different stages from the hosted failures. That demonstrates a baseline problem in the same tests; it does not establish the hosted root cause or exclude every transitive interaction. The detailed evidence summary records those limits.

Can you choose the next action?

  1. Accept updating this existing Draft PR to fixed 911166c, with the failed and cancelled jobs explicitly disclosed, and run the required upstream functional CI on that head. This would not mean CI passed, review was accepted, or the PR was ready to merge.
  2. Require another check first. Specify the upstream fixture or startup fix, or the exact hosted baseline comparison needed to decide whether these failures belong to this PR. I can execute that bounded check without changing unrelated CLI ownership logic, assertions, timeouts or CI policy.

Your intake requirement requires full upstream functional CI before landing. I am asking about a disclosed-failure Draft update, not a waiver of that merge requirement. The currently published 3f67ee4 has passing full fork CI, but its upstream Cross-platform CI and Catalog check still require approval and have not executed.

Update after the repository CI-policy change: dc0ed96 now defines lane=all as a batched dev check. It prohibits per-PR dispatch without an explicit maintainer request, limits an exception to one exact pre-merge head, and prohibits re-dispatch merely because a head moved or rerunning to green. I will follow that policy and will not trigger another full per-PR run. Does your older intake request still require a specific exception for this PR, or should we proceed with the disclosed-failure Draft update and ordinary upstream PR CI? The historical failed run remains failed under either answer.

I have frozen 911166c and disabled fork Actions after collecting the logs. No additional dev merge or CI retry is queued. The running-turn cache renewal and image recovery scope, including 26 MiB, stays unchanged. The independent runtime/security, lifecycle/retention and owner-acceptance Draft hold remains in force.

Maintainer triage (2026-10-28, against dev e1976da):

The prefix-preservation portion is already integrated through #7749 (162beb3), with attribution. The remaining renewal and image-recovery work is still open. The previously withdrawn continuation-parser finding remains closed.

Please:

  1. Keep the remaining scope explicit and preserve fix(anthropic): preserve cache prefixes during routed compaction (#7307) #7749’s implementation. The outstanding policy change includes src/adapters/anthropic-image-guard.ts:41 and the opt-in renewal entry at src/anthropic/cache-renewal-runtime.ts:26.
  2. For the next agreed candidate, resolve the layout roster, src/server/responses/core-options.ts, src/server/responses/sidecar-execution.ts, and generated structure/INDEX.md conflicts. Preserve current dev’s admission-scope additions at core-options.ts:100 and sidecar-execution.ts:197.
  3. Preserve all four cache-lifecycle test registrations and the existing structure-document caps.
  4. Update the exact-candidate validation record with Bun 1.4.4, retaining failed/cancelled results and distinguishing baseline comparisons from established root causes.

Your recent request for a disposition on unpublished candidate 911166c is acknowledged; it has not been evaluated in this triage. A maintainer should select the candidate and any bounded comparison needed, authorize ordinary current-head PR CI, and complete the outstanding runtime/security and owner acceptance. Keep Draft meanwhile. Current policy treats lane=all as a batched dev check; no additional per-PR dispatch is requested here.
