Summary

Recognize supplied OCX keys before falling back to anonymous loopback admission. This lets Direct mode substitute the stored main credential instead of rejecting a valid OCX bearer with HTTP 401.

Preserves keyless local access, caller-owned credentials, dedicated-header precedence, and remote authentication requirements. Retains local listener authority for Reserve and hosted images, and carries the same key identity into history/notes with live revocation checks. Includes focused regression coverage.

Verification

  • 149 focused tests and 9 file-size checks passed.
  • Typecheck, privacy scan, structure checks, and docs build passed.
  • test:changed hit the 180-second limit with Windows symlink failures and Cursor/hook failures; the latter passed an isolated rerun (11 tests). An earlier run also had an Anthropic management assertion failure reproduced before this fix.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs were updated.
  • Auth changes were reviewed for credential handling and unsafe defaults.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Responses requests on local loopback addresses can be admitted without an API key when authentication is not required.
    • OpenCodex bearer authentication can use the stored main login for Direct mode.
    • Proxy keys are accepted on loopback and public listeners; public access still requires valid admission credentials.
    • Local Codex image display now respects loopback authentication and listener origin.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified Direct mode, context-request authentication, proxy-key separation, and loopback access.
  • Tests

    • Expanded coverage for loopback hosts, authentication sources, context ownership, image display, and Responses endpoints.

📝 Walkthrough

Loopback authentication now records listener provenance and can identify supplied credentials. Context-history, Codex Reserve authorization, Responses image handling, documentation, and tests now use the listener-aware admission data.

Changes: Loopback authentication and provenance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Admission resolution and route policy
src/server/auth-cors.ts, src/server/index/serve-options.ts, structure/providers/openai-tiers.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/*
Loopback requests can retain anonymous admission or identify supplied credentials. Remote requests still require valid admission credentials. Context-history routes enable loopback-key identification during entry and revalidation.
Codex provenance and Reserve authorization
src/codex/*, src/providers/openai-sidecar.ts, src/vision/plan.ts, src/web-search/index.ts
Codex authorization carries source and listener. Loopback checks use either field, and dispatch guards snapshot both fields before later policy checks. Related provider interfaces accept the expanded admission shape.
Responses media integration
src/server/responses-hosted-image-display.ts, src/server/responses/passthrough-delivery.ts, structure/data-planes/images.md
Hosted-image eligibility uses structured admission data and receiving-listener provenance.
Authentication and ownership validation
tests/server/*, tests/codex-integration/*, tests/responses/*
Tests cover loopback hosts, credential identity, Direct ingress, Reserve eligibility, hosted-image display, context ownership, and revoked-key revalidation.

@lidge-jun @Ingwannu Could you review the authentication change and apply maintainer-sponsored if it meets the security requirements? I am addressing the automated review findings; the local validation limitations remain documented in the PR.

Updated both owner docs in c314f07 to align Reserve eligibility and context ownership with listener provenance and optional key identity. Structure checks, privacy scan, and git diff --check passed. This commit changes documentation only; the existing partial-test and timeout disclosures remain in the PR description.

Please review 0153589. The metered-combo consent guide and Korean context guidance now match keyed loopback behavior; all three addressed documentation threads have replies. Frozen-lockfile dependency check, docs build (585 pages), internal-link checks, structure check, privacy scan, and git diff --check passed. Existing test failures and timeout disclosures remain unchanged in the PR description.

Thank you for the work here. We're closing this to keep the review queue manageable: it conflicts with dev and fails CI; a focused PR rebased on current dev would be easier to review. You're welcome to reopen this or open a smaller PR against dev.

Thanks for clarifying. Both failed checks (hygiene and enforce-target) report unsponsored_surface: they require maintainer security review and the maintainer-sponsored label we requested above, rather than reporting failing CI tests. The separate local test limitations remain documented. Before we rebase or narrow the PR, do you accept the direction of preserving a supplied OCX key identity on loopback so Direct mode can substitute the main-account credentials correctly?
