Summary

Carries two external PRs that both change src/codex/auth-api/account-list.ts, rebased onto current dev (516aaaaf8) as one change. Original commits keep their authors.

  • fix(codex): list pool accounts without a native home #7450 (@alexalok): list pool accounts without a native home. Before, GET /api/codex-auth/accounts (plain, ?refresh=1, and POST /refresh) failed outright with CODEX_HOME_UNAVAILABLE on a host with no native Codex home, hiding every stored ChatGPT Pool account. Now the native-main observation counts as "unavailable" only when absence is proven (codexHomeIsAbsent), and stored Pool accounts list and refresh normally. Listing does not create a home or change the native account's cached identity or reauth state. Files at the home path, dangling links, untraversable parents, invalid explicit CODEX_HOME, and unsafe OPENCODEX_HOME storage (now validated before the home) still fail closed. Credential mutations keep their strict claim. Docs updated in all eight locales.
  • feat(codex): expose safe account slot identity metadata #7499 (@Plamyth): expose safe account slot identity metadata. Account-list rows (API and ocx account list --json) gain slotId (equal to id), slotKind (native-main | pool), and an optional opaque upstreamAccountKey (uai1_ + 64 hex). Local clients can use it to tell that two registered slots belong to the same upstream user. It is emitted only when consistent account and user claims are observed, and suppressed on conflicting or malformed claims.
  • Carry fix (this PR): the native slot could emit a join key when auth.json's account_id had no supporting token account claim, while Pool rows require a matching access-token claim. The native path now requires one token that claims both the matching account and a user, and every user claim in the token set must agree. Before, an ID token claiming only account A and an access token claiming only user B combined into an unverified (A, B) key that matched a real A/B Pool row. This resolves the open CodeRabbit thread on feat(codex): expose safe account slot identity metadata #7499 and the follow-up Codex P2 on this PR. The unverified account ID still feeds Pool duplicate detection.

Decisions

  • One carry fix, no redesign. Both PRs land as their authors wrote them. The only behavior change on top is the native-claim requirement above, plus test moves required by the ratchet.
  • Native binding rule. Codex suggested either requiring the access token to claim the account, as Pool rows do, or requiring the token that supplies the account to supply a consistent user. I took the second: the key needs one token (ID or access) that claims both the account and a user, and all user claims present must agree. Both options reject the mixed set. The second also keeps a key when a consistent ID token binds the pair, which proves the same pairing a Pool access token does. Anything unproven omits the key (fail closed).
  • File-size ratchet. feat(codex): expose safe account slot identity metadata #7499's CLI JSON case pushed tests/cli/cli-account.test.ts past its 2313-line cap, so it moved to tests/cli/cli-account-slot-identity.test.ts with a small local harness (same assertions, list openai --json). fix(codex): list pool accounts without a native home #7450's layout entry took scripts/test-layout/layout.json to 2000 lines (NEW_OVERSIZED), so it now shares an existing line and the file is back at 1999. The new integration test is registered in the layout-codex-collision.json shard and in test-layout-expected.json.
  • Docs. The public docs already say the key appears only when the proxy can verify both identities, which stays accurate. The precise native-claim rule went into structure/providers/openai-accounts.md. feat(codex): expose safe account slot identity metadata #7499's docs stay English and Korean only, per the repository's practice of not requiring same-PR translation for new English sections.

Security summary

This touches the authenticated Codex account management API (/api/codex-auth/accounts) and the native-home resolution used by credential reads. It adds no new route, dependency, workflow, or logging, and authentication of the route is unchanged.

  • What the response can now contain. slotId is a verbatim copy of the existing id field. slotKind is a constant derived from id === "__main__". upstreamAccountKey is "uai1_" + HMAC-SHA256(key = local admin token, "opencodex-upstream-account-v1\0" + JSON([chatgptAccountId, userId])). It is emitted only when an admin token is configured and both claims are present, consistent and token-backed. It cannot be computed or confirmed without the local admin token, and it changes when that token rotates.
  • Proof by test. tests/codex-integration/codex-account-slot-identity.test.ts drives the real GET /api/codex-auth/accounts handler with distinctive sentinels and asserts that the raw response body contains none of: the upstream account ID, the user ID, the native access, ID and refresh tokens, the Pool access and refresh tokens, every JWT payload and signature segment, or the admin token. It also asserts the key format, that main and Pool keys match for the same user, that rotating the admin token changes the key, and that the rotated token never appears. Existing tests cover conflicting claims, a malformed ID token, a missing user claim, and a missing secret (all omit the key). tests/cli/cli-dto-fidelity.test.ts shows the CLI drops any key that is not ^uai1_[0-9a-f]{64}$ or whose slotId differs from id.
  • Native claim binding. The native key now requires one token that claims both the matching account and a user, with all user claims agreeing, so a mixed or stale token set (account in one token, user in the other) omits the key instead of falsely joining a Pool slot (regression case in codex-account-slot-identity.test.ts).
  • Native-home fallback. Only read-side observation tolerates CODEX_HOME_UNAVAILABLE, and only after codexHomeIsAbsent proves absence. withNativeMainCredentialClaim and credential mutations are unchanged. Storage validation now runs before home resolution, so unsafe OPENCODEX_HOME fails closed even when the home is missing (regression cases in codex-auth-headless-accounts.test.ts).
  • Residual. The key is a stable correlator for anyone who can already read the authenticated account list, scoped to one installation and one admin token. Maintainer security review is still required per MAINTAINERS.md.

Review threads on the source PRs

Verification

Run on Linux with Bun 1.4.3 (OCX_TEST_RUNNER_BUN=~/.bun/bin/bun), with HOME, CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR and OPENCODEX_HOME isolated to a mktemp directory. Heavy runs were serialized with flock /tmp/ocx-heavy-test.lock.

  • Focused: bun scripts/test.ts over codex-auth-headless-accounts, codex-auth-api, native-profile-store, native-profile-manager, codex-home-owner, core-lab-boundary, codex-stored-main-duplicate, cli-dto-fidelity, cli-account, cli-account-slot-identity, codex-account-slot-identity, test-layout, test-layout-tooling and file-size-ratchet: 740 passed, 0 failed (14 files) on 88595951f.
  • Red→green: codex-account-slot-identity.test.ts gave 1 pass / 1 fail before the native-claim fix and 2 pass after. For the split-claim fix it gave 3 pass / 1 fail on 27f8feb2d (the mixed token set received a uai1_… key) and 4 pass on 88595951f. The consistent-token case passed on both, so valid keys are still emitted.
  • bun run test:changed on 88595951f (merge base 516aaaaf8): 34,451 passed, 45 skipped, 5 failed across 1,550 files. The 5 failures are in tests/codex-integration/codex-shim-readiness.test.ts (3) and tests/gui/gui-pair-client.test.ts (2). They fail the same way on untouched origin/dev 516aaaaf8 in a clean worktree on this host (25 pass / 5 fail there), so they are host-environment failures and are outside the changed area.
  • bun run typecheck: pass. bun run privacy:scan: pass. bun run structure:check: pass. git diff --check origin/dev...HEAD: clean.
  • Not run: the full bun run test (too heavy for this shared host; test:changed covers the import graph) and the docs-site build (the carried docs edits are fix(codex): list pool accounts without a native home #7450's, built on its source PR).
  • Windows-sensitive: yes. An added line in codex-auth-headless-accounts.test.ts contains process.platform === "win32", which matches the windows-sensitive-diff.sh markers. A Cross-platform CI lane=all dispatch on this exact head is required before merge.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • ocx account list can display saved ChatGPT pool accounts even when no native Codex home is present, including in the dashboard and during refresh.
    • JSON output includes account slot identifiers and types, plus an opaque key when shared identities are verifiable. Matching keys identify a shared upstream user but do not merge slots or quota state; keys may change when the admin token rotates.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Listing accounts no longer creates a Codex home or signs out the native account. Existing native quota observation continues when Codex client integration is disabled.
    • Invalid or inaccessible Codex paths and unsafe storage are reported as errors. Refresh marks the native account as needing reauthentication in specified cases and clears that status after a successful refresh.
  • Documentation
    • Updated account-listing guidance across supported languages.

alexalok and others added 9 commits October 23, 2026 04:19
The native slot emitted upstreamAccountKey when auth.json carried an
account_id that no token claim backed, while Pool rows require a matching
access-token account claim. Require at least one matching token claim before
retaining the native user ID; the unverified account ID still feeds duplicate
detection.

Add a route-level proof that the account-list response serializes no upstream
account ID, user ID, access/ID/refresh token, or administrator token, and that
the key changes when the administrator token rotates. Move the carried CLI
JSON case and the headless layout entry out of files at their size caps.

📝 Walkthrough

Account-list responses now include registered slot identity and, when identity claims qualify, an opaque upstream account key. Listing handles an absent native Codex home without creating one, while invalid Codex paths and unsafe OpenCodeX storage produce errors.

Explanation

The title "fix(codex): list pool accounts without a native home and expose safe slot identity metadata" matches the main changes in the changeset. The raw summary shows account listing and explicit refresh no longer create a missing native CODEX_HOME (structure/providers/openai-accounts.md, src/codex/auth-api/account-list.ts). It also shows that Codex account-list rows now carry slotId, slotKind, and an optional upstreamAccountKey (src/cli/account-api.ts, src/codex/auth-api/account-identity.ts, src/codex/auth-api/account-list.ts). The title covers both primary themes. It is long at 91 characters, and it does not mention the native-claim binding fix or the collision-identity changes, but it still reflects the primary change. The PR objectives describe the same two changes.

🟡 Minor · Reject dangling OPENCODEX_HOME links in… · native-profile-store.ts:207-225

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject dangling OPENCODEX_HOME links in canonicalizeDirectoryPath.

When OPENCODEX_HOME is a dangling symlink, statSync(cursor) returns ENOENT. The current code treats the symlink as a missing path and reconstructs it from its parent. If CODEX_HOME is absent, listing then returns the pool snapshot instead of PROFILE_STORAGE_UNSAFE.

Check the unresolved component with lstatSync only after statSync reports ENOENT. This preserves valid symlink targets.

Maintainer decision (decision:9c21e453, D2): when an explicitly configured CODEX_HOME does not exist, the account list still returns stored pool accounts. The tests in this PR already pin that behavior, and structure/providers/openai-accounts.md documents it. The CodeRabbit objection on src/codex/auth-api/http.ts:22 is answered by that decision; non-directory, dangling and untraversable homes still fail closed.
