Summary

Catalog healing must compare directory entries without treating an ambiguous hardlink pathname as a proven match or a proven different target. On macOS, native realpath can report another hardlink name, which can interfere with release fences and cached observations.

This preserves the canonical parent and leaf identity for multi-link observations and adds a bounded same / different / unknown comparison with metadata revalidation. Admission and precommit accept only same; a possibly related unknown release fences healing. An unknown owner publication invalidates the generation without adopting a baseline or clearing the release latch, and unknown observations cannot reuse cached data.

Windows native normalization, including 8.3 aliases, and ordinary single-link behavior are retained. The comparison uses at most 64 filesystem API calls and 40 symlink hops, with no directory enumeration or new dependency. These are operation bounds, not a wall-clock guarantee.

POSIX symlink targets now resolve intermediate directories before applying ..; missing and non-directory crossings remain unknown. Intermediate link identities are revalidated within the same budget. Windows keeps its native lexical path behavior. Regressions use distinct-file OS read/realpath oracles and include POSIX literal-backslash and file-link cases.

Limits

Two different leaf names with the same parent and inode remain unknown on macOS, including real sibling hardlinks and case/Unicode aliases. This can defer healing unnecessarily. The comparison deliberately does not enumerate directories; entry relationships without bounded identity evidence remain unknown. This PR does not claim to resolve every alias or provide a physical-file-wide mutation fence.

Related runtime behavior: Bun #44550. That report is context, not proof that it caused every earlier CI failure.

Verification

Current candidate: cf72010f480d607bdf390717c28f62be240b0981, a normal merge of the preserved 9a6973a3 composition and dev 50afcec5. The six PR-owned files are unchanged from that composition; the three production and two test files remain byte-identical to the previously validated public 192687bc.

Runtime and configured test runner are both Bun 1.4.4. On the refreshed candidate, official Bun 1.4.4 on Windows passed:

  • The 40-hop exhaustion regression: 1 case / 5 assertions.
  • Initial unavailable paths versus observed dangling/cyclic links: 1 case / 10 assertions.
  • Layout guards: 29 cases / 579 assertions.
  • Reference TypeScript, structure, generated skill surface, six-file privacy/size and committed-diff checks.

Each selected case ran in its own process with the existing assertions and limits. Native exit, stdout/stderr completion and owned-child cleanup were recorded. The hop test uses its injected read seam to reach 40 hops independently of the production 64-read budget; it does not claim that the production comparator performs 160 reads.

Historical evidence at 192687bc remains separate: self-heal 100 pass / 2 POSIX-only skips / 265 assertions, heal integration 15 / 71, runtime 59 / 212, and successful cross-platform run 40109205588. Those unchanged-source observations were reused rather than rerun, and are not a full-suite result for this new composition.

New exact-head CI is required before merge. Maintainer acceptance of the conservative availability tradeoff remains required. The existing Ready state is preserved; no live catalog, account, service, global configuration or application was changed.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and preserves the existing identity/fence contract.
  • Owning documentation and changed-base interactions were reviewed.
  • Focused validation and historical evidence are distinguished.
  • New exact-head CI and required maintainer acceptance.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Catalog healing now pauses when the relationship between catalog paths cannot be confirmed, preventing reads, updates, or commits against uncertain targets.
    • Publication events establish or restore a baseline only when the catalog target is confirmed as matching. Events with uncertain targets clear tracking; events for distinct targets are handled separately.
    • Catalog changes are no longer treated as successful when the target’s identity is uncertain.
    • Path comparisons account for aliases and links, and ambiguous results are treated as unconfirmed rather than matching.

Walkthrough

Catalog path comparison now distinguishes proven matches, mismatches, and uncertain identity. Healing, candidate commits, and publication handling use those results to gate work. The test-runner Bun pin changes to 1.4.4, and an upload test fixture now checks whether early TLS responses flush before request completion.

Changes: Catalog path healing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bounded catalog path identity
src/codex/catalog/heal-observation.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-catalog-self-heal.test.ts, structure/codex-home.md
compareCatalogHealPaths performs bounded path inspection and returns same, different, or unknown. Tests cover filesystem aliases, hardlink identity, unavailable paths, and bounded lookups. The documentation describes path identity behavior.
Healing and publication gates
src/codex/catalog-self-heal.ts, src/codex/convergence.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-catalog-self-heal.test.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-catalog-heal-integration.test.ts, structure/codex-home.md
Healing and candidate commits require a proven path match. Unknown relationships stop observation reuse or commit processing. Publication and release handling use path comparison results to update tracking and lifecycle state. Integration tests cover suspended heals and a symlink chain that exceeds the comparison bound.

Bun test-runner version

The test-runner pin changes from Bun 1.4.3 to 1.4.4. Tests cover matching and differing caller versions and an incorrect override. CI comments and documentation describe independent runtime-role validation and candidate promotion checks.

Buffered upload early-response test

Layer / File(s) Summary
Early TLS response fixture
tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-upload.test.ts
The fixture adds a half-open TLS mode that records request completion and response flushing. The buffered early-response test asserts that the response flushes before the request completes.

Independent source review (gpt-6.1-sol, dispatched by the triage manager, 2026-10-24) at head ab8dfda3ed:

VERDICT: MUST-FIX
LANE_ALL_REQUIRED: yes

Reviewed current head ab8dfda3ed1cb76bf185a42c3f7e306b92e8f323.

  • P1 — Symlink targets are normalized before filesystem resolution. src/codex/catalog/heal-observation.ts:42: with /a/link -> bridge/../catalog.json and /a/bridge -> /b/subdir, the actual target is /b/catalog.json; resolve() instead selects /a/catalog.json. If both files exist, comparison can incorrectly return different, causing catalog-self-heal.ts:263 to ignore a matching release. Resolve intermediate directories with filesystem semantics within the budget, or return unknown. Add regressions for this topology and missing/../catalog.json. Verified by source tracing; not executed.

  • P2 — Exact-head platform validation remains missing. tests/codex-integration/codex-catalog-self-heal.test.ts:515 models platforms by replacing process.platform. Current-head CI succeeded with Windows/macOS skipped; no exact-head workflow_dispatch exists. Require ci.yml lane=all on the final head and native identity/fencing coverage. Maintainer acceptance of the documented conservative availability tradeoffs also remains outstanding.

All six changed files reviewed. Existing tests remain registered; layout.json is 1,999 lines; the updated owner doc is 600 lines; no changed-file ratchet violation found. PR template complete, zero unresolved threads, 4 commits behind current dev, mergeable without conflicts. No additional credential/auth/workflow/dependency findings.

NOT RUN: tests, typecheck, builds, validation scripts, native reproduction. No edits or GitHub mutations.

This is a read-only source review; merging still requires the gates named above (exact-head CI, lane=all where marked, and maintainer acceptance where required).

…tics

A relative symlink target containing .. was normalized lexically, so a symlinked intermediate directory made the comparator follow the wrong parent. Walk each intermediate component within the existing read budget: resolve symlinked or missing directories with realpath, treat non-directories and failures as unknown, and keep the leaf for the next lstat hop.
Measured OS behavior splits by platform: Windows normalizes .. lexically across junctions/reparse points and even past missing components, while POSIX resolves each directory and refuses a missing crossing. Keep lexical resolve on Windows; on POSIX walk each intermediate component inside the read budget, record intermediate symlinks in the revalidation snapshot, and treat missing or non-directory crossings as unknown. Regressions assert the independent readFileSync/realpathSync result before the comparator verdict, and the POSIX-only literal-backslash case is an explicit platform skip.
A symlinked intermediate that resolves to a regular file must fail the traversal with ENOTDIR on POSIX; dirname() after realpath would have accepted the wrong catalog. Stat the resolved intermediate inside the read budget, require a directory, and record the resolved identity in the link snapshot so revalidation also catches a target swap.

Addressed the path-resolution finding in 0b443cc6f7e1b1f07ba364b8e7af7bc9a7869815.

POSIX link targets now resolve intermediate directories before applying .., within the existing read budget; missing/non-directory crossings stay unknown, and intermediate symlink identities participate in revalidation. Windows retains native lexical normalization. Distinct-file readFileSync/realpath oracles showed that Windows handles these paths differently, so the regressions check the actual platform contract rather than assuming POSIX behavior everywhere. Literal backslashes and symlinks resolving to regular files have explicit POSIX cases.

Official Bun 1.4.4 Windows verification passed 115 related tests before the final POSIX-only guard; unchanged Windows behavior was not rerun. Type, structure, privacy and diff checks passed on the final candidate. Independent source review cleared the delta. Native POSIX execution and exact-head lane=all remain pending, so the PR stays Draft and the platform-validation requirement is not marked complete.

Maintainer decision for v2.93.0 release prep: DEFERRED_POST_RELEASE (independent security review: MUSTFIX).

An independent security/correctness review (gpt-6.1-sol, high reasoning) of head cf72010f480d607bdf390717c28f62be240b0981 merged onto origin/dev c2f3d8b42be found two blocking regressions against current dev. Each was reproduced with a deterministic scratch regression that fails on this PR and passes on the origin/dev modules:

  1. High: src/codex/catalog/heal-observation.ts:117. Revalidation of observed links, entries and parents only runs on Darwin. On Windows, if a leaf symlink is retargeted from A to B after readlinkSync and before native resolution, the comparison still returns same against A, even though native realpath and the file contents prove B. The same schedule returns different on dev, so this widens the target-admission TOCTOU window. Repair: revalidate on every platform within the shared read budget, and return unknown on drift or exhaustion.
  2. Medium (availability): src/codex/catalog-self-heal.ts:269 (also :166). If the old custom catalog becomes a dangling symlink, switching to and successfully publishing a new regular catalog never recovers healing. The old-target comparison stays unknown, publication clears state, and later ticks keep rejecting the obsolete target (0 convergence calls, versus 1 on dev), until a restart or a repair of the old path. Repair: a proven owner publication that matches the currently selected target should invalidate the old generation and establish a fresh target and baseline, while unproven publications stay fenced.

Requested focused files pass (148 pass / 3 skip / 0 fail on Bun 1.4.4), and ratchet, structure and typecheck are clean. Those tests do not cover the two schedules above. Because this is a filesystem-identity security boundary and both findings regress dev, it will not ship in v2.93.0. After the release, please address both items with regression tests that reproduce the schedules, then request a fresh review. The exact-head lane=all dispatch for this head was cancelled together with this decision.

Maintainer integration decision (L-B lane, v2.93.0 release prep, release-blocking): MERGED into dev by squash, through the dev maintainer-integration path in MAINTAINERS.md. Supersedes the earlier DEFERRED_POST_RELEASE comment. This is a security-boundary change (filesystem identity).

Review history. Each round was a fresh independent gpt-6.1-sol review at high reasoning. Fixes were pushed as normal commits; nothing was rebased or force-pushed.

Round Head Result Resolution
r1 cf72010f MUSTFIX: (a) on Windows, a symlink retargeted between readlink and native resolution still compared same; (b) a dangling old catalog path wedged re-anchoring d951d71b: every platform revalidates links, entries and parents; a proven current-selection publication re-anchors
r2 d951d71b MUSTFIX: (c) the fresh publication read went through a repointed selected junction and adopted an unpublished catalog fdee9698: the handler reads the published entry, retains its identity (bigint/ns signature) and requires a post-read match with the selection
r3 fdee9698 MUSTFIX: (d) identity was captured after the first comparisons 574f9294: identity capture precedes every comparison and carries through the read and acceptance
r4 574f9294 PASS, 0 blocking / 0 non-blocking (a)–(d) closed. 130 real-junction retarget schedules and 32 paired hardlink cases pass. The 64-read and 40-hop limits are enforced.

Behavior notes (documented in structure/codex-home.md). Outside an active convergence, a publication with unknown identity now preserves prior state instead of clearing it; r3 and r4 judged this safe, with release fences intact. Renaming onto a pre-existing hardlink with the same inode, parent and metadata is accepted, because it is the same file; r4 judged this acceptable. The behavior is a cooperative observation, not an atomic filesystem lease.

Exact-head evidence on 574f9294d85dca2a678944234ee2a18a61fcb3d7:

  • PR checks: all 29 passed, including Cross-platform CI run 40364363119 and Catalog async contracts.
  • lane=all workflow_dispatch run 40364373402: success, including all Windows shards and macOS. It was dispatched through ci/pr-7610-laneall-574f9294 at the same SHA.
  • Combined tree, merged with current origin/dev d610cccb, Bun 1.4.4: catalog self-heal, heal integration, reanchor regressions, both layout guards and the file-size ratchet 174 pass / 2 POSIX-only skips / 0 fail. tsc --noEmit, structure:check, skill:surface:check and privacy:scan pass.

The regression tests in tests/codex-integration/codex-catalog-heal-reanchor.test.ts failed on each previous head and pass at this head.

NOT RUN: full local suite (resource exception; parallel release lanes), native macOS/Linux local runs (CI covers macOS), real Windows 8.3 alias qualification, network filesystems, installed Desktop/live-provider validation.

Child #7688 follows: retarget to dev, merge current dev, then its own review, CI and lane=all.
