Summary

A live sideband join holds a turn admission lease from upgrade start until its upstream transport ends. If the client disconnected while the upstream WebSocket handshake was still pending, the lease was released immediately, even though the upstream socket was still CLOSING. Active-turn accounting and account ownership then dropped one turn too early.

The live upgrade path in src/server/index/serve-options.ts now hands ownership over at the upstream dial:

  • While relay and credential resolution run, no transport exists yet, so client cancellation still retires the turn at once.
  • The request-cancellation binding is detached just before the upstream dial. From then on, the lease is released only when the upstream transport reports close or CLOSED. This matches the existing contract for failed handshakes and failed upgrades, and structure/runtime.md records it.

Verification

Windows, pinned Bun 1.4.4, exact head (current dev 81ce59591 merged in):

  • Regression first, in tests/server/server-live-cancel.test.ts, both over a real raw-TCP WebSocket upgrade:
    • "cancels a pending sideband join": fails on dev, where active turns drop while the upstream is still CLOSING. With the fix, the count drops only after the upstream closes, exactly once.
    • "cancels during credential resolution": guards the resolution phase. Admission is released promptly with no upstream dial.
  • 147 tests across live, live-close, audio dictation, metrics, layout, layout-tooling and file-size ratchet: 0 failures. An earlier, broader pass over 27 live, audio, admission and auth files: 773 pass, 0 fail.
  • bun x tsc --noEmit: exit 0. bun run structure:check and bun run privacy:scan: passed.
  • Independent review: two rounds; the final round reported no findings.

Full local suite NOT RUN (shared-host resource exception); hosted Ubuntu shards and a lane=all run on this head cover the rest.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Live sideband connections now keep their admission active while an upstream connection is still pending after a client disconnect, releasing it when the upstream closes.
    • If a client disconnects before the upstream connection begins, admission is released without starting an upstream connection.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for cancellation during both stages of the connection process and for repeated close events.

…ient cancellation

Client cancellation no longer releases the turn admission lease directly. It still stops acquisition through req.signal, and every exit releases the lease when the upstream transport closes, including a join cancelled while its upstream handshake is pending.

Walkthrough

The server now detaches the client-abort binding before the upstream WebSocket handshake. The admission lease remains held until upstream close or CLOSED handling releases it. Tests cover cancellation during a pending handshake and during credential resolution before dialing.

Changes: Live-sideband cancellation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Admission lease lifecycle
src/server/index/serve-options.ts, structure/runtime.md
The server detaches the client-abort binding before the upstream handshake. The runtime documentation describes lease ownership while the upstream join is pending.
Cancellation lifecycle tests
tests/server/server-live-cancel.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout-clients.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
Tests check that cancellation during a pending handshake requests upstream closure and retains admission until closure. They also check that cancellation during credential resolution releases admission without dialing upstream. The layout files register the test under server.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(live): keep sideband admission until the upstream closes after client cancellation" matches the main change. The change in src/server/index/serve-options.ts detaches the client-abort binding just before openLiveSidebandUpstream, so the admission lease holds through the pending upstream handshake. It releases only when the upstream reports close or CLOSED. The title also names the fix type and the affected area (live). It is a single, specific sentence. Its length (86 characters, 11 words) is at the long end but still readable. The added test server-live-cancel.test.ts and the structure/runtime.md doc update both support this main change.

✅ Deterministic PR hygiene checks passed.

…am dial

Keep the request cancellation binding while relay resolution runs (no transport exists yet) and detach it just before the upstream dial, from which point close/CLOSED owns the release. Adds a regression for cancellation during credential resolution.

## Live sideband handshake

`src/server/index/serve-options.ts` establishes the authorized upstream live sideband before accepting the client WebSocket upgrade, and `src/server/index/live-sideband.ts` implements the bounded upstream dial. `openLiveSidebandUpstream` bounds the handshake to ten seconds and retains at most 32 frames and 1 MiB of preamble within the frame limit. `src/server/ws-bridge.ts` defines the runtime handoff carrying captured frames or terminal state. Failed handshakes return 502/504 and client cancellation returns 499; exact upstream 404/410 status is unavailable from Bun's client WebSocket. Admission ownership lasts until upstream close/CLOSED, including failed upgrades and failed attachment. The ordinary Responses WebSocket exchange remains separate.

Release the admission lease at once when no upstream socket exists.

Line 431 says admission ownership lasts until upstream close/CLOSED. It also says that from the dial on, only close/CLOSED releases the lease. Two paths release the lease earlier, and neither has an upstream socket:

  • src/server/index/serve-options.ts:1801-1805: when resolution returns a Response, the code calls releaseAcquisition() before returning. No dial occurs on this path.
  • src/server/index/serve-options.ts:1830-1835: when the upstream handshake fails and upstreamHandshake.socket is absent, the code calls discardUpgrade() after the dial. No close event is needed.

The first sentence needs a socket condition. The second sentence also needs the same condition, because the no-socket handshake failure occurs after the dial.

Make the cancelled-credential test reach the post-resolution path before asserting no dial.

At line 205, expect(dials).toBe(0) runs while held.promise is still pending. The spy on getValidCodexToken returns that promise, and it is rejected only at line 207, inside finally. The request therefore never gets past credential resolution. A regression that dials after a cancelled request receives valid credentials would leave dials at 0, and this test would still pass.

To cover that path:

  • Resolve held with a valid credential after client.destroy(), instead of leaving it pending.
  • Wait until the cancelled request has finished before asserting dials === 0. Use an observable completion signal, not a fixed delay where one is available.

The existing guard that should prevent the dial is the if (req.signal.aborted) check before openLiveSidebandUpstream in src/server/index/serve-options.ts. The test should exercise that guard.

Maintainer integration decision for v2.93.0 (lane L-D1, release-blocking item): merging into dev by squash.

  • CI on the exact head (96d25ab3e38e1c8e64b8d06fe26533fec3b8b207): PR CI 40375131061 passed. Cross-platform lane=all 40375129685 passed with every job green, including the Windows and macOS shards.
  • Independent security review: two rounds. Round 1 found one blocker: dropping the cancellation binding entirely kept a turn admitted while credentials were still resolving. Fixed by keeping cancellation-driven release until the upstream dial and handing ownership to the transport from the dial on. Round 2 passed with zero findings.
  • What this head adds after the review: a merge of current dev and a one-line comment change, made to keep serve-options.ts under the file-size limit.
  • Regression first: "cancels a pending sideband join" fails on dev. "cancels during credential resolution" fails on the first iteration of this PR. Both pass here.
  • Merged with current dev (9a61bd96b) and tested locally on Bun 1.4.4: tsc --noEmit exits 0, the structure check passes, and 147 cancel, live, close, audio, metrics, layout and ratchet tests pass with 0 failures. serve-options.ts is at 1999 lines.
