Summary

messaging-remote-send.test.ts can fail with remote_auth_failed (#7809) because its two co-located fixture owners can receive the same port.

remoteMessagingPair() picked both ports with remotePortCandidate(), which binds port 0, reads the port and releases it. Two back-to-back calls can return the same number: 50,000 adjacent pairs produced 10 duplicates locally. Bun binds both owners to that port without EADDRINUSE, so connections reach the wrong owner. Authentication then fails during the awaited owner setup, which sits outside the sendRemoteMessage receipt mapping. The CI log reported this as LocalMessagingError: remote_auth_failed.

The fixture now holds the first port with an exclusive listener while it selects the second, then releases it. Product code is unchanged, and no retries, sleeps or timeouts were added.

The original CI run (40419760194) did not log the ports, so attributing that failure to this collision is an inference. An event-ordering search (180 forced orderings of socket error, close and timer events in authenticatedRemoteSocket) found no product promise that escapes; zero unhandled or uncaught events were observed.

Closes #7809

Verification

Bun 1.4.4, OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1, Linux (WSL Ubuntu):

  • Regression co-located owners have distinct ports even when released candidates are reused (models an allocator that immediately reuses a released port): 0 pass / 1 fail before the fix, 1 pass / 0 fail after.
  • bun test --isolate tests/codex-integration/messaging-remote-send.test.ts with a preload that forces candidate reuse: 17 pass / 0 fail.
  • bun test --isolate tests/codex-integration/messaging-remote-contract.test.ts: 14 pass / 0 fail.
  • Strict tsc --noEmit, structure:check and privacy:scan entrypoints: exit 0.

These remote transport cases are skipped on Windows, as they were before this change. Both touched files are uncapped.

NOT RUN: full suite and local test:changed (CI runs test changed), macOS, real SSH or native-daemon integration.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed. (Test-only; none needed.)
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. (No product auth code changed.)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added coverage for messaging connections that share a host, verifying that each receives a distinct port even when a recently released port is reused.
    • Improved test setup to hold a reserved port while selecting a port for a second connection, then release it safely.

Walkthrough

The remote messaging fixture now holds a localhost port reservation while selecting the second store’s port. A new integration test simulates immediate reuse of a released candidate and checks that two co-located owners receive distinct ports.

Changes: Remote messaging port allocation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reserve a port and test candidate reuse
tests/helpers/messaging-remote.ts, tests/codex-integration/messaging-remote-send.test.ts
At lines 18–24, the fixture reserves a port while enabling the first store, selects the second store’s port before releasing the reservation, and releases it in finally. At lines 101–126, the integration test intercepts Bun.listen, simulates candidate reuse, checks that the owners receive distinct ports, and restores the spy and closes resources.

Possibly related issues

  • lidge-jun/opencodex#7845 — The fixture change addresses the released-port collision mechanism in tests, but does not change the product paths mentioned in the issue.

Possibly related PRs

  • lidge-jun/opencodex#7740 — Both changes address a released ephemeral port being reused before the intended process or fixture binds it.

The test-only change is mergeable with follow-up: a rare port collision can leave the intended regression untested.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title clearly and concisely describes the main change: reserving distinct ports for messaging test fixtures. It matches the changes in tests/codex-integration/messaging-remote-send.test.ts and tests/helpers/messaging-remote.ts.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #7809 tracks the root cause of the intermittent remote_auth_failed in tests/codex-integration/messaging-remote-send.test.ts. The pull request addresses a concrete, test-specific race. In tests/helpers/messaging-remote.ts, remoteMessagingPair() binds an exclusive 127.0.0.1 listener for the first store, selects the second candidate while that listener remains active, and always stops the reservation in finally. This prevents the two co-located fixture owners from receiving the same released candidate port. In tests/codex-integration/messaging-remote-send.test.ts, the new test intercepts port-0 allocation, forces candidate reuse, asserts distinct enabled-store ports, and restores the listener spy and fixture resources. The reported regression passes after the change, and the linked issue does not require a specific confirmed root cause. The reported attribution remains an inference, but the issue's investigation objective is satisfied by the focused fix and regression coverage.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #7809 and the current PR intent. tests/helpers/messaging-remote.ts changes only the remote test fixture's port-selection sequence. tests/codex-integration/messaging-remote-send.test.ts adds only the imports and regression test needed to model immediate released-port reuse and verify distinct ports. The test also cleans up the spy, owners, and pair. No product messaging, authentication, or transport behavior changes. No unrelated cleanup, retry, timeout, or release change is present.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Assert that the first port allocation reused the candidate.

remoteMessagingPair() exercises the reuse path only when its first port: 0 allocation obtains candidate. If another listener holds candidate at that point, the stub at lines 110-113 falls back to an OS-assigned port. The test can then pass against the old fixture without exercising reuse.

A single flag set by any successful candidate attempt does not detect this. The second remotePortCandidate() call also goes through the spied Bun.listen. If the other listener releases candidate before that call, the second attempt succeeds and sets the flag, even though the first allocation fell back. Record only the outcome of the first port: 0 allocation, and assert it after the pair is created.

Maintainer dev integration (L5 lane), per MAINTAINERS.md.

Decision: squash-merge at exact head 7b0e51d7ebfba6f0b742c95a48a7b018284a74da.

  • Independent review at this exact head: PASS, 0 blocking. The reviewer confirmed the mechanism on its own: Bun 1.4.4 accepted duplicate ports for Bun.serve({ development: false }) on Linux and Windows. Forcing equal owner ports reproduced the original remote_auth_failed stack. Ablating the reservation made the new regression fail at its equal-port assertion. Linux: send + contract 31/0. Windows: 11 pass / 20 skip (these transport cases are skipped on Windows).
  • PR CI at the exact head: Cross-platform CI 40515833640 success, enforce-target 40515833699 success, hygiene success.
  • lane=all 40561824309 at the exact head: all 27 jobs succeeded (macOS, Ubuntu, Windows, desktop). The aggregate roll-up job was still waiting for a runner during the Actions backlog.
  • Current with dev 7deb359f: no newer dev commit touches this PR's two files.
  • Follow-up from the review: the product paths have the same release-before-SSH-bind pattern. That is pre-existing and tracked in [Bug]: remote messaging releases its forward port candidate before SSH binds it #7845.
