00:02:25.099 'wmic' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
00:02:25.154 operable program or batch file.
00:02:25.154 Build step 'Execute Windows batch command' marked build as failure
Beginning with Windows Server 2025, WMIC is available as a Feature on Demand (FOD). It can be added with the DISM /Add-Capability command. It will be removed from Windows in a future release.
Feature: WMIC. A Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) command-line utility. Feature on Demand: WMIC - Capability Name: WMIC~~~~
Starting with Windows 11, version 24H2, WMIC is not preinstalled.
It's quite big, so not recommended to do it on the fly, only as a semi-permanent installation.
Not a solution if Jenkins is using cloud-hosted runner images. Only applicable if the machines are under full control of Node.js.
The fixes LGTM; we should land them and see if they work (I expect them to). The part @targos saw in update-windows.yml should also be fixed, but it is only used when provisioning a new VM, so it's less urgent than the other 2 fixes.

PowerShell for WMI replaces the WMIC tool. Use PowerShell or programmatically query WMI as a replacement for WMIC. To learn more about WMIC deprecation, see WMI command line (WMIC) utility deprecation: Next steps.

I've asked an LLM what would it look like to stop requiring it on nodejs/node:

Potential fixes, both llm advised.
nodejs/node#65949
#4463

Can you get #4463 out and so we can resume nodejs/node#65949 to confirm and
[fast-track]afterwards?jenkins,win: replace WMIC in diagnostics (#4463)
StefanStojanovic commentedon Sep 10, 2026
I landed it and resumed the other PR's build here. Let's see what happens.

Looks like it's fixed now (we only need #4464 and we can re-enable
request-ci)
