Amendment 16 tooling: lane-rename <old> <new> — lanes-edit.sh rename-lane (row + log + handoff in one commit), RENAMED verb, lanes/aliases.tsv resolved by every reader, one GitHub comment per held object #35
Tooling half of Lane Collision Protocol Amendment 16 — brettheap/new-workstation#30 (governing), #31 (DRAFT text). Brett Heap, 2026-09-14, verbatim: "we need the ability to rename a lane. maybe lanes --rename ." → "lane-rename (Recommended)", "Row + log + handoff + aliases (Recommended)", "Yes, one comment per held object (Recommended)".
Acts (by lane openRepoTools-3, in this repository, with or after the Amendment 12/13/15 items #25/#29/#31):
lanes-edit.sh rename-lane <old> <new> [--verbatim] [--no-github] — ONE commit, refused or whole. Refusals first, nothing written: no row under <old> (any case); a row under <new> (any case); <new> not <repo>-<n> unless --verbatim; a LIVE session holding <old> in another window (live-holder); two rows under <old> differing only by case; an unreadable register/records (fail closed, naming the read). Then: the row key cell → `<new>` with *(ex , renamed <UTC>)* beside it; git mv lanes/log/<old>.md lanes/log/<new>.md + append RENAMED — lane <new>, session <uuid>@<ws>, <UTC>, lane:<new> ← lane:<old> — <why>; git mv the handoff the row names to …-lane-<new>.md + Rule 3 stamp RENAMED from <old> by <uuid> (lane <new>) at <UTC>, row's handoff column follows; lanes/aliases.tsv += <old>\t<new>\t<UTC>; commit (explicit pathspecs) + pull --rebase + push; THEN one GitHub comment per HELD object (who --lane <new>'s open partition), citing the commit sha — skipped by --no-github.
RENAMED added to VERB_LIST as a lane-kind verb (with Amendment 13's NOTED/RULED): changes no object's state; every last-line reader skips it.
Alias resolution in every reader that takes a lane name — row_of_lane/row_line, who, lanes, live-holder, history, Rule 6 append-line attribution, lane-start's lookup, session_start_block, the Amendment 12 guard — through lanes/aliases.tsv, case-insensitively (Amendment 15's canon_lane is the natural seat: resolve alias → canonical row); chains resolve to their end; a cycle is refused at write time.
lane-rename <old> <new> — the word on PATH: resolves its window (here_context), calls rename-lane, renames the tmux window when it is named <old>, and types /rename <new> into the pane when run inside the lane's own window (Amendment 12(h) M1); from elsewhere it prints what the lane must do at its next prompt. Installed by openRepoTools --install (artifact count +1 everywhere it is stated).
lanes --rename refuses with the one word to type (Amendment 11(j) stays read-only).
Tests in tests/test_lane_helpers.sh: each refusal; the four moves land in ONE commit; an old name resolves through the alias in who, lanes, Rule 6 attribution, live-holder and the hook block; a chain; a cycle refused; --no-github; the window rename logged by the fake tmux.
Docs: docs/README-lanes.md (the rename act, the alias table, the two hand renames of 2026-09-14 regularised by running the command on Brett Heap's word).
