lanes-edit.sh: a write with nothing staged still publishes the local commits origin lacks, so the RECOVERY's re-run of commit pushes the edit it stranded, and the conflict RECOVERY warns that reset --hard drops a peer's commits - #214
Conversation
… not yet run; left: run it, the commit_push fix, both RECOVERY texts, the reset warning, manual lines, PR done: tests/test_commit_push_published_edit_194.py, the proving test for #194, written first and not yet run (the run queued behind another lane's full suite on the shared pytest lock and was stopped for the swap). Six cases: the issue's own sequence end to end (exit 3, the peer commits its file, the printed re-run must publish); a clean checkout with nothing ahead stays a no-op with no network call; a checkout behind origin stays a no-op; a publish past a peer's dirty file keeps the dirty-elsewhere guard; the conflict RECOVERY warns that reset --hard drops a peer's unpushed commit; refuse_dirty_checkout names the act to re-run. left: run the test on unmodified lanes-edit.sh to see it fail; the fix in commit_push (when nothing is staged and origin/<branch>..HEAD is non-empty, go on to the push loop); the two RECOVERY texts (commit_push's dirty-elsewhere exit 3, refuse_dirty_checkout); the reset --hard warning in the conflict RECOVERY; the matching manual lines in docs/README-lanes.md (about :95-97 and :198-211); two test nits (the pull net-call check should not depend on the -C path spelling; the warning/drops line order is provisional until the text is final); then green, push, PR, CI. …inds ahead of origin, so the RECOVERY's re-run of `commit` pushes the edit it stranded (#194) `commit_push` returned at "nothing staged ... no commit made" before its push loop. An edit the loop could not get out (a peer's uncommitted file blocking the rebase, six rejected pushes) is already a local commit, so the RECOVERY's re-run of `lanes-edit.sh commit` staged nothing, exited 0 and pushed nothing. Now, with nothing staged, it reads origin/<branch>..HEAD: empty is today's no-op with no network call; non-empty takes the same push loop (the caller's lock, the dirty-elsewhere guard, the retries) without a commit of its own. The RECOVERY texts say what works: the dirty-elsewhere exit 3 says the re-run pushes the local commits; refuse_dirty_checkout separates what the authors commit from the refused act that is re-run; the conflict RECOVERY lists every unpublished commit by content (`cherry -v`) and warns that `reset --hard` drops a peer's unpushed commit along with the reader's own. docs/README-lanes.md says the same in both places. …ipt, so `log` reaches refuse_dirty_checkout instead of the Amendment 7(b) session refusal The first locked run showed case 6 failing on both trees for that reason, before the checkout was ever read. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… staged finds ahead, and only lane tooling's own; the conflict RECOVERY lists HEAD and stops on a moved checkout
The review measured the blocker: with another lane's unpushed commit in the
shared checkout deleting `scripts/link-estates`, a no-op `replace-in-row`
published it and origin lost the file. Every write with nothing staged took
the push loop; now only `commit` does (CP_PUBLISH_AHEAD, set in its arm
alone and never read from the environment), and every other no-op write is
today's exit 0 with no network call.
`commit`'s publish reads every queued commit first and refuses with 2,
naming the commit and the path, when one deletes a file or touches a path
outside lanes/ and handoffs/. A failed read refuses the same way. Nothing is
pushed.
The conflict RECOVERY lists `cherry -v origin/<branch> HEAD`, which is what
the reset acts on, and adds a STOP for a checkout that moved after the
abort. It also says a LANES(concurrent@…) or LANES(pre-existing@…) capture
names no lane and is not the reader's. The dirty-elsewhere RECOVERY's claim
is qualified ("if lanes/LANES.md is clean") and names the refusal. The
publish list counts what it leaves out. replace_line's contract comment and
the manual say the same.

…hes, refuses merges, type changes and HEAD off the branch, fails closed on every read, and pushes exactly the commit it read The check found three ordinary checkout states where `commit` still published a deletion of scripts/link-estates, and a race: - a merge's own changes (`log --name-status` prints none); - HEAD on another branch (the fence read HEAD, the push sent the branch); - a local branch named origin/main shadowing the tracking ref; - a commit made between the fence and the push. cp_publish_fence now reads refs/remotes/origin/<b>..refs/heads/<b>, spelled in full, and requires HEAD to be refs/heads/<b>. Its reads are plumbing (rev-list --parents, diff-tree --stdin --always --raw) under --no-replace-objects. It refuses merge and root commits, and passes only an added or modified regular file under the register's derived directory (LANES_PREFIX), its log and alias paths, or handoffs/. Every read and every classification is status-checked, and diff-tree must return one header per commit it was given, because it skips an unreadable commit with exit 0. The push sends <tip the fence read>:refs/heads/<b>. After each pull --rebase, CP_AFTER_REBASE re-reads the queue and re-pins the push. Ordinary writes push the branch as before. Lane renames (a log deleted and re-added) stay refused, by design, and the message says what carries them. Both exit-code tables list the new refusal; the manual describes the rule. …, by its own path, and refuse foreign staged entries and in-progress operations (#197) (#199) Step 2's commit block was `cd ~/projects/brett-wip`, `git add "$handoff"`, a bare `git commit` and `git pull --rebase && git push`, under a paragraph that said "Commit with an explicit pathspec" and "On a rebase conflict: abort". The bare commit took the whole index, so a checkout holding another lane's staged entry published it; the spelled path is not the checkout a lane window writes; and a same-file conflict left the checkout mid-rebase. The block now resolves the checkout ($LANES_REPO first, then the helper's workspace-root, lane-handoff's order), refuses before the add on a staged entry other than the handoff or on a rebase, merge, cherry-pick or revert in progress, adds and commits with -- "$handoff", pulls and pushes origin ${LANES_BRANCH:-main}, and on a failed pull or push aborts any rebase and says NOT PUSHED. The prose names $handoff_file as the same file. tests/test_handoff_skill_commit_block.py runs the block itself, extracted from the skill, against a bare origin and real clones under bash and zsh: 17 cases fail on the shipped block and pass with this one, and 7 keepers pass on both. CI at 5b68127 failed on the capital N, and nothing else. - HEAD off the branch, a merge in the queue, a branch shadowing origin/main, a type change, and bytecode beside a handoff are variants of test_commit_refuses_a_queue_that_is_not_lane_toolings_to_publish, as lane 3 asked. The separate bypass tests are folded in. - The no-op case also runs with CP_PUBLISH_AHEAD=1 exported, which kills lane 2's mutant M01. - The composite assert is split (Sonar S9073). - The fence refuses bytecode, a cache or an environment (#162's list). Its comment and the manual call it a path and kind filter, never an ownership check. - The no-op note says `commit` would publish every queued commit, so read `git cherry -v` first (lane 2's SHOULD 3). - The `commit` usage line and both exit tables name the publish, its refusals and the failed read. … rename and prefix guards and the conflict RECOVERY's two STOP lines Lane openRepoShape-2's take-or-leave items on #214 (6243280936), taken: - A queue that `pull --rebase` empties, because origin already holds every commit in it by content, no longer pushes origin its own tip and prints "pushed". `cp_publish_refence` reads the count it re-fenced (CP_FENCE_AHEAD); at 0 it says so and exits 0, no push. Exit 0's row in both tables names the case. - SHOULD 4: two refusal variants pin the fence's guards. A log renamed out of lanes/ is named as its deletion (red under `-M`), and lanes-archive/ beside lanes/ is not the register's (red without the trailing slash). The fence now adds that slash itself to both register prefixes. - NIT 5: the conflict RECOVERY's "STOP and take it to the lane its subject names" line and its reset line's "only if every '+' line is yours" are asserted word for word, in order. …, byte for byte as on main, and now prints only after the read-back finds the commit on origin, so lane-start, the triad goldens and every caller that reads that line stay right (#198, slice 1b) Stage 2 printed `pushed origin/main: <sha>, confirmed by a read-back (attempt N)`. That moved T018's goldens, which hold c45a452's line `lanes-edit: pushed origin/main (attempt 1)`, in `test_triad_lane_tooling.py` and `test_triad_lane_tooling_handoff.py`. The words are main's again. What changed is when the line prints: since S4 it prints only after `cp_confirm` finds the commit on origin, so "pushed" now means confirmed. A push that cannot be confirmed is never this line: it exits 3 as `pushed, not confirmed: <sha>`. The replay module and #214's module now assert the line itself, and that attempt 1's line never appears once the push replays. Before (at e3b6810): triad 1 failed, 4 passed, 22 skipped; triad handoff 1 failed, 21 skipped. After: replay 28 passed; #214's module 25 passed; triad 5 passed, 22 skipped; triad handoff 1 passed, 21 skipped; hygiene 247 passed. …rea, and add the lines for #263, #289, #294 and #296, the changes after a42946e (#228) `docs/release-notes/v1.1.0.md` takes the fixes of lane 3's review of d8a349d (#293 comments 6314185715 and 6314529807, the second of which replaces three of the corrected texts of the first) and the lines for the changes after a42946e. The review's fixes: - Line 45 (#255, #271) no longer says that `lane-reconcile` and `lane-handoff` read a dependency nested in a leg: only the sweep and `lane-end` do. It says that a leg directory this account cannot search is unreadable and never `absent`, that a nested dependency is unreadable to the sweep and `lane-end` too, and that the sweep still reads a declared leg beneath such a directory as `absent` (#272, open). It also says NOT POLLED where the tool does. - Line 46 (#280, #283): an `awk` exits, it does not return, and the sentence on a status of 0 or 8 is gone. - Line 61 (#214): the fence never checks whose a local commit is, only that it adds or changes a register or handoff file. - The `<other-changes>` item counts 44 of the 53, because the openRepoShape pin's line (#233) is in the list, and the other 9, not 43 and 10. The milestone item names #247 and lists the six entries of 2026-10-20. - #209 is not tests-only: its `-e` fixes `lanes`' stderr filter under macOS's BSD grep, so it moves from the test suite to the lane area, and its one line there carries its test changes too. It is cited once. The lines for the changes after a42946e, each in its area and worded from its squash commit and description: #263 (d9065df) and #289 (fb2cf36) under the register and `lanes-edit.sh`, #294 (acc89ea, which closes #292) under `lane`, `lane-start`, `lane-end` and the name guard, and #296, which pins every Ubuntu runner to ubuntu-24.04, under the test suite and its checks. #296 has not landed yet: lane 3 lands it right before #293. The `<other-changes>` item says the lines were added on 2026-10-21 and are not in its counts, and the placeholder stays for #293 itself. … 1.1.0 and list, by area and from the squash titles of aaa7bc8..a42946e, what else changed on main since v1.0.0 (#228) (#293) Part of #228. It brings `docs/release-notes/v1.1.0.md` up to date on main: first on `a42946e`, as lane 3 asked on Brett Heap's word (#228 comment 6303608345, the section for lane openRepoTools-2, task 1), then with lane 3's review of `d8a349d` (comments 6314185715 and 6314529807 on this pull request), with the lines for the three changes that landed after `a42946e`, and with the line for #296, which landed right before this pull request. It is one file, changed in two commits (`d8a349d` and `bebb77d`), 59 insertions and 4 deletions against main. Lands last before rehearsal D's freeze; lane 3 reviews and merges it (#228 6303608345) **What changed** - **Lane 3's review is applied,** in the second commit: - **The line on #255 and #271** no longer says that `lane-reconcile` and `lane-handoff` read a dependency nested in a leg, since only the sweep and `lane-end` do. It says that a leg directory this account cannot search is unreadable and never `absent`; that a dependency nested in a leg whose directory, or one above it, it cannot search is unreadable to the sweep and `lane-end` too; and that one known gap remains, #272, where the sweep reads a declared leg beneath such a directory as `absent`, so `lane-end` does not hold on it. It also says NOT POLLED where the tool prints it, and it says that the item closes two gaps in #246, where it said "both gaps" with nothing before it to refer to. - **The line on #280 and #283:** an `awk` exits and does not "return", and the sentence on a status of 0 or 8 is gone, because a reader of the notes cannot act on it. - **The line on #214:** the fence passes a local commit only when it adds or changes a register or handoff file, and never checks whose it is, so the line no longer says "the lane tooling's own". - **The counts in the `<other-changes>` item:** the pin's line (#233) is in the list, so the list carries 44 of the 53, and the other 9 have their lines under "What 1.1.0 adds", not 43 and 10. The item says "the openRepoShape pin" where the runner pin of #296 could be taken for it. - **The milestone item** names #247, so it lists the six entries the milestone held on 2026-10-20. - **#209 is not tests-only.** Its `-e` fixes `lanes`' stderr filter under macOS's BSD `grep`, so it moves from the test suite to the lane area, after #208's, and its one line there also carries its test changes: the `repoG#8` assertion and the count of bash files in prose. It is cited once. - **Lines for the changes after `a42946e`:** #263 (`d9065df`), #289 (`fb2cf36`) and #294 (`acc89ea`, which closes #292) landed on 2026-10-21, from 11:28Z to 11:30Z. Each has a line in its area, worded from its squash commit and its description: #263 and #289 under "The register and `lanes-edit.sh`", and #294 under "`lane`, `lane-start`, `lane-end`, the name guard and their helpers". - **#296 has its line too,** last under "The test suite and its checks": CI and the release workflow run on `ubuntu-24.04`, because `ubuntu-latest` is now Ubuntu 26.04, and `macos-latest` is unchanged. It landed right before this pull request, as `5afba4a`. - **"What 1.1.0 adds" gains two lines,** after the annotated-tags item. They are for the three entries that closed in the v1.1.0 milestone after the draft was written: - **#255,** fixed by #271: the lane tools name what they could not read in a triad's legs. `lane-handoff` names every tree-inventory record that is not a whole schema-1 one, and a leg directory this account cannot search is unreadable and never `absent`. Only the sweep and `lane-end` also see a dependency nested in such a leg, since `lane-reconcile` and `lane-handoff` read declared legs only, and #272 stays open as the known gap. - **#280,** fixed by #283: `lane-handoff` reads the lane's lifecycle whole and parses it afterwards, so an `awk` that exits early can no longer turn `lane-state`'s SIGPIPE into a lifecycle that could not be read. - #283 is #280's pull request, so the three numbers make two lines. Each line cites the issue and its pull request, as the hook-pair line does for #237 and #247. - **"What else changed since v1.0.0" is drafted** from `git log aaa7bc8..a42946e`, which is 53 squash commits, one pull request each and no merge commit. It is grouped by area, one line each, and each line ends with its pull request. It lists 44 of the 53: the pin's line (#233) at its head and 43 by area, as 4 on the estate commands, 10 on the register and `lanes-edit.sh`, 11 on `lane`, `lane-start`, `lane-end` and the name guard, 6 on the handoff and its skill, 1 on the lane tools in a triad's legs (#246), 9 on the test suite and its checks, and 2 on the triad migration's records. - **The other 9 are accounted for elsewhere:** the package series of #228 (#262, #267, #268, #269, #270 and #284) is covered by #228's lines, and #247, #271 and #283 have the lines above. - **The lines added on 2026-10-21** are for the four changes after `a42946e`: #263 and #289 on the register and `lanes-edit.sh`, #294 on `lane`, `lane-start`, `lane-end` and the name guard, and #296 on the test suite and its checks. The areas now hold 47 lines, one for each of 47 pull requests, and #233's line at the head of the list makes 48. - **The list is redone at the tag.** It is drafted from the squash titles only. - **"Before the tag" is updated in three items:** - `<pr-count>` gives the count at `a42946e`, which is 53; - `<other-changes>` says what was drafted, which 9 pull requests have their lines under "What 1.1.0 adds", that the lines for #263, #289, #294 and #296 were added on 2026-10-21, and what is left to do at the tag; the placeholder's own line now stands for the changes after `a42946e` that have no line above; - the milestone item names the six entries the milestone held on 2026-10-20: #228 still open, #237 closed by its pull request #247, #255 closed, and #280 closed by its pull request #283. **Not added:** nothing that has landed. #296 landed right before this pull request and has its line. This pull request itself, and whatever lands after it, is what the `<other-changes>` placeholder stands for. None of #263, #289, #294, #296 and #292 is in the v1.1.0 milestone, which still holds the six entries of 2026-10-20. **How this keeps the draft's rules** - **One-line paragraphs:** every added line is its own list item, and none is wrapped. - **References:** every reference above "Before the tag" is spelled `opensoft/openRepoTools#N`, with no bare `#N`, since the notes are published from another repository after the migration. - **Placeholders:** `<other-changes>` stays as a named placeholder in code font, as the closing line of the list and as its checklist item. `<pr-count>` is unchanged apart from the drafting-time count. - **The file's closing lines are untouched:** the self-naming last line stays last. **Tests** - **T023's verify command** passes: the last line names `openRepoTools-spec` and `docs/release-notes/v1.1.0.md`, `## Before the tag` is there, and so is `pipx install --force openrepotools`. - **Coverage:** a script over `git log aaa7bc8..acc89ea`, 56 commits and no merge, finds each pull request cited above "Before the tag" except the six of #228's package series, which #228's lines cover. That is 46 by area, #233 at the head of the list, and #247, #271 and #283 under "What 1.1.0 adds". #296 is not in that range, and its line cites it. - **Hygiene:** by grep over `tests/`, no test names this file. The two that read its content scan every tracked file, and both are in `tests/test_repo_hygiene.py`. The only other test that names `release-notes` is in `tests/test_release_workflow.py`, and it reads `release.yml`, not the notes. All of `tests/test_repo_hygiene.py` was run on the file, through `tests/run.sh` with every `LANES_*` and `TMUX*` variable unset: ```text -k 'repo_hygiene' -v collected 2933 items / 2696 deselected / 237 selected 237 passed, 2696 deselected in 2.59s ``` - **Not run:** the whole suite. CI's `tests` job is the suite of record. This pull request's own runs on `bebb77d` went red on `ubuntu-latest`, which is Ubuntu 26.04, for the reasons #296 gives, because #296 was not yet on main. The record is lane 3's queue run over main, #296 and `bebb77d`, on `ubuntu-24.04` (below). **Where the draft's rules left room, and lane 3's answers (comment 6314185715)** - **Which section holds #255 and #280:** "What 1.1.0 adds", because the milestone is Brett Heap's scope for the release and #237 with #247 already sit there. - **`<other-changes>` stays** as a closing placeholder after the drafted list, since this pull request itself lands after `a42946e`. - **How much to list:** the tests-only and migration-record lines stay through the tag, because the check that every pull request has a line depends on them. If Brett Heap wants a shorter body, they fold into one line that still lists every pull request number. - **Issues and pull requests:** the milestone lines cite both, and the area lines cite the pull request only. **Lane 3's re-check of `bebb77d`** (#293 6315668503) is MERGE AFTER FIXES. - **What holds:** every line lane 2 listed, the recount behind line 140 (44 of the 53 pull requests in `aaa7bc8..a42946e`, and 56 in `aaa7bc8..acc89ea`), the file's rules, and T023's verify commands. - **One SHOULD and two NITs, all wording:** - line 45's sentence on a dependency nested in a leg, where "one above it" reads as a directory above the leg, which is #272's case. The text was lane 3's own; - "One known gap" in the same line; - line 74's last clause. - **Why they wait:** lane 3 merges the notes as tested and carries the three fixes into the notes' final pass at the tag. A push here would cost another CI round while lane 2 is out of usage until 15:30Z, and the notes are edited again at the tag in any case. Before the landing, lane 3 merged main into the branch, so that its own checks ran over main with #296; the content is unchanged. …HEAD is not replayed, so a commit another writer made on top of it in the same checkout is never dropped by the replay's reset; both are kept on HEAD and named, exit 6 (#198, slice 1b) Until slices 2b and 3, lane-start's stamp, lane-handoff's commit and the skill's commit are made in the same checkout with no lock. While routing is off, that checkout is W, every lane's checkout. One of those commits could land on top of this write's commit while its push was in flight. The replay's `reset --keep refs/remotes/origin/main` then dropped that commit and its file, and the write exited 0 with nothing said. The carry form's `reset --mixed <sha>^` would have done the same. `cp_replay` now first asks for HEAD. If HEAD is not this write's commit, it names both commits and `git -C … log --oneline <sha>^..HEAD`, and exits 6 before either reset. Every later write from that checkout then refuses under S3's unpushed row until the commits are published (the publish act) or archived. Exit row 6 names the new cause, in the code's table and in the manual. Test: `tests/test_a23_publish_replay.py::test_a_commit_made_on_top_before_the_replay_is_kept_exit_6`, which follows rv1b's probe. - Before: it failed on 3905009's helper, exiting 0 where it expects 6. - After: it passes, and the replay module has 29 passed in this commit's own tree. - On the worktree together with MUSTs 1-2 (the next commit), these all passed: replay 32, guard 122, #214's module 25, a23_write_routing 46, deferred_97 9, hygiene 247 and a23_lock 24. …om the top on origin's new tip when S3's fetch finds it moved under their own checks, so a rival's claim, a peer's retirement or a peer's row that lands before S3's fetch is never written over (#198, slice 1b) `claim`'s holder checks and `add-row`'s retirement and duplicate checks run before the lock, on what `log_sync` or an earlier fetch last saw. A rival's CLAIMED, a peer's retirement of the name, or a peer's own row for it, could land between that read and S3's fetch under the lock. S3 then fast-forwarded onto it, and the write was pushed on top at attempt 1. The results were two lanes holding one object, a retired name reissued, or a second row. S4's replay never ran, because the push was not refused. The base's rescan after every `pull --rebase` went with the pull. - `CS_RECHECK`, set at load and never read from the environment, is set by `claim` (beside its replay env, before `write_event`) and by `add-row` (before its lock). - `checkout_sync` reads `refs/remotes/origin/<branch>` before and after its fetch. Where that ref moved, nothing is written yet. `cs_recheck` then runs the verb again from the top on the new tip, with the lock held, as S4's replay does with `exec` and `LANES__ATTEMPT`: `claim`'s rescan comes first (CLAIM-LOST 7, or 9), and `add-row`'s checks refuse (2). This stays inside S4's six attempts, and at the sixth it refuses (2) with nothing written. - No other verb opts in. The row verbs, `rename-lane` and the sweeps read what they check after S3. An opt-in for every verb would add a fetch and an `exec` to every write made from a checkout behind origin. Tests, in `tests/test_a23_publish_replay.py`, after rv1b's probes: - `test_a_rival_claim_landing_before_S3s_fetch_loses_exit_7`; - `test_an_add_row_whose_name_lands_before_S3s_fetch_refuses[retires-it|adds-it]`. Before: all three failed on 3905009's helper, each exiting 0. After: all pass. On this tree these passed: replay 32, guard 122, #214's module 25, a23_write_routing 46, deferred_97 9, hygiene 247 and a23_lock 24. …he stray copy a case-only rename leaves, not two logs for 15(d)'s hand merge; the 1312Z case asserts the stamp's first push; and slice 1b's composite asserts are split (#198, slice 1b) NIT 2. Amendment 23 S3 fast-forwards before `ensure_log` runs, so the state a failed case-only rename leaves (the canonical file here, untracked, and the old-cased one still published) reaches the two-logs check with both files in the working tree. Its recovery was 15(d)'s hand merge, and a commit of the stray copy would publish a second file for one lane. Where exactly one of the two is tracked, the refusal now says which is which: it names the tracked log and the untracked copy, the `diff` that compares them, the `rm -- <copy>` and the re-run, after which the write renames the tracked log once, inside its own commit. Every other two-logs state keeps 15(d)'s words. `ensure_log`'s published-path guard is unchanged; it still answers where the published log is not in the working tree. SHOULD 2. `test_the_1312Z_shape_is_pushed` asserts the stamp pushed on its first attempt and met no refused push, as two asserts. Without S3's fast-forward the stamp edits the stale tree, its push is refused, and the replay catches up, so every other assert held and m1b's S10 survived. SHOULD 3. The 16 composite `assert A and B` in slice 1b's own lines are split, one condition per assert (Sonar S9073): the replay module 10, #214's module 3, the guard module 2, the routing module 1. The routing module's other 10 are slice 1a's lines and are left to it. Tests: - New: `tests/test_a23_guard_refusals.py::test_a_stray_copy_from_a_rename_that_never_landed_is_named_as_one`. Before (HEAD's helper): 1 failed, with the "Merge them by hand" refusal rv1b quoted. After: passed. - S10 against the strengthened 1312Z case: KILLED, at the first-attempt assert (the stamp's stderr shows `push refused (attempt 1 of 6)`). - The set on this tree, one pytest process per module: the guard module 123 passed, the replay module 32, the routing module 46, #214's module 25, hygiene 253, guard_launch_mode 13. The shell suite's repoDrop cases are re-pinned to the new refusal in the stage 4 commit, with the rest of the suite's rewrite. …row` compare origin's tip with the tip their checks read, so a move another process made in a shared checkout while they waited on the lock re-runs them too, and the six-attempt bound has a test (#198, slice 1b) MUST-N. B35 asked only whether S3's own fetch moved `refs/remotes/origin/<branch>`. In a checkout several writers share (W, every lane's while routing is off), another process moves that same ref while `claim` or `add-row` waits on the lock after its checks: a reader's `log_sync`, a peer's push, its read-back. S3's fetch then found nothing new, so no re-run happened: two lanes' claims of one object both exited 0, and a peer's retirement fetched in by another write was answered by reissuing the name. The base settled both, through its rescan after `pull --rebase`, so this was a regression of 10169f3. Now `log_sync` records the tip it leaves (`cs_seen_mark`, `CS_SEEN`), once per process and never from the environment, and `checkout_sync` re-runs a `CS_RECHECK` verb when origin's tip after S3's fetch differs from that tip, or from the one just before the fetch (the old test, kept). The first tip is kept, not the latest: a later `log_sync` could only make a move seen twice, never missed. The re-run is B35's own: the replay's `exec` with the lock held, so `claim`'s rescan comes first (CLAIM-LOST 7, or 9) and `add-row`'s checks refuse (2). SHOULD B. `cs_recheck`'s six-attempt bound had no test, and rv1b-c's MB1 (`if false` for it) survived the replay module. Tests (`tests/test_a23_publish_replay.py`): - `test_a_rival_claim_a_reader_fetched_into_the_shared_checkout_loses_exit_7` and `test_an_add_row_whose_name_a_reader_fetched_into_the_shared_checkout_refuses`, modelled on rv1b-c's probe and made exact: a third write holds the checkout's lock at its push; the write under test is seen waiting in `mutex_try` (a `sleep` it started, read from /proc), so its checks have run; the rival claim lands from another clone, or the peer pushes the retirement; a real reader (`who`) in the shared checkout moves its `origin/main`; then the lock is let go. On 92fbe46's helper both fail (`assert 0 == 7`, `assert 0 == 2`: each pushed at attempt 1); here both pass. - `test_a_claim_that_meets_a_move_at_every_S3_fetch_stops_at_six_exit_2`: exit 2, "on each of six attempts", exactly six moves, the five attempt notes, nothing published. It passes on 92fbe46's helper, as the bound worked there, and kills MB1 (1 failed: the counter wraps to "attempt 1 of 6" and the claim goes on). - The set on this tree, one pytest process per module: the replay module 35 passed, the guard module 123, the routing module 46, #214's module 25, deferred_97 9, hygiene 253, a23_lock 24. …r writer rewrote is named as rewritten, not as kept on HEAD; a commit that lands during the replay's reset is put back; and exit rows 2 and 6 name the re-run's bound (#198, slice 1b) SHOULD A. Until slices 2b and 3, lane-start's stamp and lane-handoff rebase and push in the same checkout with no lock. One that runs while this write's push is in flight rebases this write's commit, and may push its copy. `cp_replay` then said "it and the commit on top of it are kept on HEAD", but the sha is on no branch there, and the change may already be on origin. Where HEAD is readable and does not contain the commit, `cp_rewritten` now says another writer rewrote it, and points to `git cherry -v origin/main HEAD`. That read tells whether its copy reached origin. The exit is still 6, and nothing is replayed. NIT 2. The replay's HEAD check and its reset are two git calls, and an unlocked commit landing between them was dropped with this write's commit, with exit 0. After either reset, `cp_reset_check` reads ORIG_HEAD, which `reset` writes with or without a reflog. Where that is not this write's commit, the reset is undone, but only while HEAD is still where the reset put it, so nothing that landed after it is touched. Both commits are kept on HEAD and named (6). Where HEAD has moved on, nothing is touched, and the reflog is named. NIT 1. Exit row 2, in the code's table and the manual, gains `claim` or `add-row` meeting origin moved under its own checks on each of six attempts, before any edit. Row 6 says the bound is a sixth refused push, and that S3 finding the sixth move before any edit is 2. It also names SHOULD A's rewrite and NIT 2's put-back. Tests (`tests/test_a23_publish_replay.py`): - `test_a_commit_another_writer_rewrote_is_named_as_rewritten_exit_6` (rv1b-c's probe): exit 6, "rewrote this write's commit", no "kept on HEAD", the named sha not on HEAD, its copy on origin, nothing unpublished. On 92fbe46's helper it fails at the words. - `test_a_commit_landing_during_the_replays_reset_is_put_back_exit_6`: a `git` first on PATH commits on top just before the replay's `reset --keep`, which makes the window exact. Exit 6, the reset undone, the other writer's commit on HEAD over this write's, both unpublished. On 92fbe46's helper it fails with `assert 0 == 6`: the other commit was dropped, and the write pushed at attempt 2. - The set on this tree, one pytest process per module: the replay module 37 passed, #214's module 25, hygiene 253, the guard module 123, a23_lock 24, the routing module 46, guard_launch_mode 13. …y form's compare-and-swap and a put-back that cannot be made each have a case, so neither refusal of the replay's drop can be lost without a test failing (#198, slice 1b) NIT 3 found two branches of the replay's drop that no test reached. SHOULD C (c71621f) replaced both with the compare-and-swap, so the two cases are aimed at what it made: - `test_a_commit_landing_before_the_carry_forms_drop_is_never_dropped_exit_6`: `commit`'s carry form, with an unlocked commit landing on top just before its drop. git refuses the compare-and-swap and nothing moves: the hand-edit commit and the one on top are kept on HEAD and named (6), the working tree is clean, nothing is replayed, and the branch's reflog has no drop. - `test_a_drop_whose_tree_step_and_put_back_are_both_refused_is_named_off_HEAD_exit_6`: the drop moved the branch, the tree step after it is refused, and an unlocked writer commits on the branch in that moment, so the put-back's compare-and-swap is refused too (`cp_lost_hold`). The other writer's commit stays HEAD, and this write's commit is named as off HEAD with `reflog -5`, never as kept (6). A `git` first on PATH makes each moment exact (`_git_shim`). Red before: on an export of d9ff4e6 with this module (`runs/c5-nit3-red.log`), 2 failed. The carry-form case fails at the words: d9ff4e6's ORIG_HEAD undo kept both commits too, but said "while the replay dropped it". The put-back case cannot fire there: d9ff4e6's drop is one `reset` with no tree step, so its `fired` assert fails. Mutants, one pytest run each (`runs/c5-mut.log`): - B14, the put-back without its old value: KILLED by the put-back case (the branch is put back over the other writer's commit, and the words say "kept on HEAD"). - B15, new, the carry form's drop without the compare-and-swap (the keep form keeps it): KILLED by the carry-form case (exit 2 after a replay that dropped the stamp's commit). Its control B15c, the same mutant against the keep form's case alone, SURVIVED, which is why the carry form needs its own case. After, on this tree, one pytest process per module, paced (`runs/c5-nit3-set.log`): the replay module 41 passed (39 and the two new cases), the guard module 123, routing 46, #214's module 25, hygiene 253, a23_lock 24. … for a log published under one case and held here under another no longer says "Pull first, or merge them": it tells the rename's stray copy from a rename committed here, and gives each its recovery (#198, slice 1b) The migration's scan skipped such a lane with "a case-only rename whose commit never landed. Pull first, or merge them (15(d))". No writer pulls now, and a hand pull in a shared checkout is the 1312Z hazard; a hand merge of a stray copy would publish a second file for one lane, which is why `ensure_log` stopped advising it (B36, 3c6b240). The dry run reaches this line only with the checkout at origin's tip (its behind test refuses first), so the other name is this checkout's own, in one of two states, and the line now says which: - NOT TRACKED: the copy a rename's two `mv`s left when its commit was never made. B36's recovery: compare it with the published log, re-run as its own write any line only the copy holds, remove the copy, put the published log back (`checkout HEAD -- <it>`) and re-run; the lane's next write renames it once, inside its own commit. - committed here and not on origin: the publish act refuses it (#214's fence takes no rename, which deletes and re-adds the log) and no later write carries it, so it is archived and dropped (S6.3: the archive push, then `reset --keep origin/main`) and the dry run re-run. Tracked is asked with `core.ignorecase=false` (`CP_EXACT`), as the other pathspecs here are. Test (`tests/test_a23_guard_refusals.py`): `test_a_migration_dry_run_names_a_rename_that_never_landed_and_never_says_pull`, for both states: the line names the state and its recovery, the output has no "Pull first", the line no "merge them", the dry run writes nothing, and the recovery it gives, followed, leaves no row skipped. Red before, on 948e1e0's helper with this module (`runs/c5-nit4-red2.log`): 2 failed, each at "Pull first". Mutant B16 (the tracked test made `false`) is KILLED by the committed case (`runs/c5-mut.log`). After, on this tree, one pytest process per module, paced (`runs/c5-nit4-set.log`): the guard module 125 passed (123 and the two new cases), the replay module 41, routing 46, #214's module 25, hygiene 253, a23_lock 24. …write edits in place, so a refused push whose origin no longer has that file keeps the commit on HEAD and names it, instead of replaying into nothing and dropping the write (#198, slice 1b) Slice 2a's A37: a `write-handoff --stamp` or `--prepend` that loses its race to a peer's delete of a TRACKED handoff is dropped by the replay with its commit, and the re-run finds no file and says "Nothing was written", so the write is only in the commit the replay dropped. The check belongs to 1b's `commit_publish`, as A11's and A26's did, so 1b makes it, and slice 2a's `write-handoff` sets the global for those two modes (2a uses it; no verb of 1b sets it). - `CP_KEEP_IF_GONE=""`, set at load beside the other CP_* and never from the environment: the path a write edits in place. - `cp_replay`, after its HEAD check and before the bound and the drop: where the global names a path this write's base (`<sha>^`) had and origin, just fetched by the read-back, does not, the commit is kept on HEAD and named (6), with the look and the S3 unpushed-row notes the bound gives. Asked of the base, so a file the write itself created is never "gone". Asked after the HEAD check, so "kept on HEAD" is said only of a commit HEAD is (`cp_not_head` answers otherwise). A file its base had and origin lacks means origin moved, so the origin-unmoved refusal before it can never be this case; the check sits in `cp_replay` rather than beside 2a's S4.4 block, which keeps the two textually apart for 2a's merge of this head. Exit row 6 is not reworded here: its "kept on HEAD and named" already covers the case, and the verb that reaches it is 2a's, whose row-6 clause (A27, A32) can name it. Test (`tests/test_a23_publish_replay.py`), slice 1b's own: `test_a_file_the_write_edits_in_place_deleted_on_origin_keeps_the_commit_exit_6`, on a copy of the helper whose one load-time line names the lane's log (`_helper_naming`; asserted to occur once; the shipped `repos.tsv` beside it), with `log` as the write: - `deletes-it`: a peer's `git rm` of the log lands at the push: 6, the words, `kept on HEAD: <sha>`, no replay, the write in this checkout's log, origin without the file, one commit unpublished; - `keeps-it`: a peer's empty commit lands: replayed and pushed at attempt 2 (0); - `never-had-it`: the global names a path neither the base nor origin has: replayed and pushed (0). Red before: the check made `if false &&` (mutant A01) fails `deletes-it` with exit 0, the log re-made by the re-run and pushed at attempt 2 (`runs/c5-mut.log`, `runs/c5-a37-red.out`); at 948e1e0 the global does not exist, so the copy cannot be made. Mutant A02 (the base test made `true`) is KILLED by `never-had-it` (`runs/c5-mut.log`). After, on this tree, one pytest process per module, paced (`runs/c5-a37-set.log`): the replay module 44 passed (41 and the three new cases), the guard module 125, routing 46, #214's module 25, hygiene 253, a23_lock 24, guard_launch_mode 13, deferred_97 9. If the fence passes, it lists the commits (ten, then… and N more), makes no commit of its own, and takes the existing push loop.CP_PUBLISH_AHEADis set to 0 among the globals (:1106–1114), so an exported value is overwritten. It is set to 1 only in thecommitarm (:13869–13871).cp_publish_fence(:1966–2053) andcp_publish_refence(:2055–2072)The fence reads the objects the push will send, and nothing else. It is a path and kind filter: it vouches for where a change lands and what kind of change it is. It never checks whose a commit is; it reads no subject, author or trailer.

The register's directory is derived (LANES_PREFIX, plus its log and alias paths), not a hard-codedlanes/, and matched with its trailing/, which the fence adds itself:lanes-archive/besidelanes/is not inside it. Bytecode, a cache or an environment (lane-worktrees sweep: one act that archives, rescues and removes a lane's abandoned worktrees, branches, scratch and killed-suite sandboxes after an ungraceful swap — dry run first, rescue branch or bundle before any removal, never a live writer #162's list) never passes, even there.diff-tree --stdinsilently skips a commit it cannot read and exits 0, so it must return one header per commit it was given, or the fence refuses.<sha> <status> <mode> <path>or<sha> is a merge commit. Nothing is pushed and no network call is made.pull --rebasethen drops them all, and the push used to send origin its own tip and print "pushed".cp_publish_refencenow reads the count it re-fenced (CP_FENCE_AHEAD). At 0 it says so, sends no push and exits 0, the code of the no-op it now is.Lane tooling's own lane rename stays refused, deliberately. It deletes and re-adds its log, with the log and handoff edited in the same commit. A deletion is the one change origin cannot get back, and the fence keeps one rule for it. The refusal says so and names what carries it: the next register write from this checkout.
