🚀 Thanks for opening this pull request! We appreciate your effort in improving the project. Please let us know once your pull request is ready for review.

Tip

  • Keep pull requests small. Large PRs will be rejected. Break complex features into smaller, incremental PRs.
  • Use Test Driven Development. Write failing tests before implementing functionality. Ensure tests pass.
  • Group code into logical blocks. Add a short comment before each block to explain its purpose.
  • We offer conceptual guidance. Coding is up to you. PRs must be merge-ready for human review.
  • Our review focuses on concept, not quality. PRs with code issues will be rejected. Use an AI agent.
  • Human review time is precious. Avoid review ping-pong. Inspect and test your AI-generated code.

Note

Please respond to review comments from AI agents just like you would to comments from a human reviewer. Let the reviewer resolve their own comments, unless they have reviewed and accepted your commit, or agreed with your explanation for why the feedback was incorrect.

Caution

Pull requests must be written using an AI agent with human supervision. Pull requests written entirely by a human will likely be rejected, because of lower code quality, higher review effort and the higher risk of introducing bugs. Please note that AI review comments on this pull request alone do not satisfy this requirement. Our CI and AI review are safeguards, not development tools. If many issues are flagged, rethink your development approach. Invest more effort in planning and design rather than using review cycles to fix low-quality code.

Do not use a Delete operation object as a deduplication constraint.

When appIdentifier is { __op: 'Delete' }, line 1493 adds that object to delQuery. When the matched installation has no non-empty appIdentifier, line 1556 does the same. Neither query can match normal String values, so conflicting installations can remain after a device-token cleanup.

  • src/RestWrite.js#L1492-L1493: add appIdentifier only when typeof this.data.appIdentifier === 'string'.
  • src/RestWrite.js#L1553-L1556: select the incoming string or idMatch.appIdentifier, then add the constraint only when the selected value is a string. Do not fall back to this.data.appIdentifier for a Delete operation.

Based on learnings: appIdentifier must accept { __op: 'Delete' }, but deduplication must use a string value rather than the operation object.

@coderabbitai Addressed in e5d8d93, with one part of the suggestion adopted and one declined. Replying here because the comment was outside the diff range and has no inline thread.

Adopted: a Delete operation object must never be used as a deduplication constraint. The previous commit still fell back to it when no scope was available, which produced a 500 Database adapter error rather than a useful cleanup. That is fixed.

Declined: the suggestion for the branch at L1492-L1493 was to add appIdentifier only when typeof this.data.appIdentifier === "string". That is the exact change flagged as Major in the earlier review on this PR: it drops the constraint that scopes the cleanup, so the cleanup reaches installations of other applications. Measured on that branch, gating on typeof alone deletes the other application's installation, so restoring it would reintroduce the problem.

What was done instead: never place a non-string in the query, and where no application scope is available, skip the cleanup rather than run it unscoped.

scenario before e5d8d93 after
matched installation has appIdentifier 200, scoped 200, scoped
matched installation has no appIdentifier 500 200, cleanup skipped
no matching installation 500 201, cleanup skipped
ordinary string appIdentifier 200, stale row removed 200, stale row removed

This resolves the correctness concern: no query is ever built from an operation object, so there is no query that silently matches nothing. Ordinary deduplication is unchanged and still removes stale rows, which is verified by an existing spec in the block. Skipping is limited to the case where the request both changes the device token and unsets appIdentifier in the same operation, which returned a 500 before this PR.

Verified on MongoDB 8.0.4 and PostgreSQL: 11 specs in the new block and 181 related specs across ParseInstallation, InstallationsRouter, InstallationDedup, Parse.Push, PushController, PushWorker, AudienceRouter, Idempotency and ParseSession, 0 failures on both. Lint clean.

@mtrezza Confirmed at e5d8d93.

The current logic does not place the Delete operation object in delQuery. When the request has no string application scope, it skips cleanup. When an installation matches, it uses the incoming string appIdentifier or the matched installation's string appIdentifier.

This preserves the appIdentifier constraint for cross-application isolation. It also prevents the 500 Database adapter error from an operation object used as a query value.

The existing repository guidance for src/RestWrite.js aligns with this implementation. The concern is addressed.

When an existing installation changes `deviceToken` and deletes `appIdentifier`, the cleanup query must use the incoming `appIdentifier` if it is a string; otherwise it must use `idMatch.appIdentifier` to preserve application scope. The sibling no-`idMatch` cleanup branch has no stored `appIdentifier` fallback and remains fail-closed for this Delete-operation input.

Learning: In `src/RestWrite.js`, `RestWrite.prototype.handleInstallation` must accept `{ __op: 'Delete' }` for `_Installation.appIdentifier` so that `DatabaseController` can unset the optional field. It must still reject non-string `deviceToken`, `installationId`, and arbitrary non-string `appIdentifier` values. Deduplication queries must include `appIdentifier` only when `typeof this.data.appIdentifier === 'string'`.

@coderabbitai Applied the assertion tightening in d27ed9d. The test now asserts the full installation set rather than a single membership check, matching the sibling test, so the "cleanup is skipped" claim is fully provable.

All review findings on this PR are now addressed:

  • Preserving valid appIdentifier Delete operations
  • Preserving the application scope so cleanup cannot reach other applications
  • Never using an operation object as a deduplication constraint
  • Full-set assertion in the skipped-cleanup test

Coverage of the changed lines was also completed: codecov/patch passes, with no uncovered statements remaining in the diff.
