What problem does this PR solve?

Issue Number: ref #68173

Problem Summary:

Backport #68176 (47eea3d2375a9ed2c9225f1a3a822ba1bb9b8ac6) to release-8.5-20260424-v8.5.6.

Global-sort external readers can remain blocked on the memory limiter while previously loaded data retains the quota pending downstream ingestion. Keeping object-store readers open during the wait can also prevent downstream ingestion from making progress.

What changed and how does it work?

  • Add non-blocking memory acquisition and buffer allocation, leaving buffer state unchanged when quota is unavailable.

  • Close readers and release partially loaded buffers before waiting for downstream data release, then retry the range read. Preserve cancellation and release-signal race handling from the original fix.

  • Adapt the backport to the release branch's br/pkg/membuf, br/pkg/storage, common engine interfaces, and existing loadRangeBatch / readAllData signatures. Do not backport unrelated storage moves or read-offset precomputation.

  • Bring over the required regression helpers and adjust the reader-open count for this branch's per-batch statistics reads. Use the existing context logger API in the log assertion.

  • Backport only br/tests/br_gcs/run.sh from #67142 (0f820cb05d), with no scan-region-limiter or other production changes: add the required fake GCS credential fields, use the endpoint form expected by CI TiKV, and make legacy BR v4.0.8 coverage opt-in via TEST_LEGACY_BR_GCS=true, matching upstream. This addresses the br_gcs failure (missing field private_key_id) observed in BR CI builds 170 and 171.

Compatibility/risk: no persisted metadata, SQL syntax, or configuration changes. Retrying can add object-store reads under memory pressure. If a batch cannot fit and no downstream data can release memory, return the allocation error rather than wait indefinitely.

Check List

Tests

  • Unit test
  • Integration test
  • Manual test (add detailed scripts or steps below)

Local validation (Ready profile):

GO_REPOSITORY_USE_HOST_CACHE=1 make bazel_prepare
go test -p 4 -tags=intest,deadlock ./br/pkg/membuf -run 'TestPool|TestBuffer|TestLimiter' -count=1
go test -p 4 -race -tags=intest,deadlock ./br/pkg/membuf -run 'TestPool|TestBuffer|TestLimiter|TestWaitUpMultipleCaller' -count=1
make failpoint-enable
go test -p 4 -tags=intest,deadlock ./pkg/lightning/backend/external -run 'TestByteReader|TestUnexpectedEOF|TestEmptyContent|TestSwitchMode|TestReadAll|TestReadLargeFile|TestMemoryIngestData|TestChangeEngineConcurrency|TestLoadRangeBatchReleasesReadersWhileWaitingForDownstream|TestMergeKVIter|TestMergeIterSwitchMode|TestReadAfterCloseConnReader' -count=1 -timeout=180s
go test -p 4 -tags=intest,deadlock ./pkg/lightning/backend/external -run '^TestLoadRangeBatchReleasesReadersWhileWaitingForDownstream$' -count=20 -timeout=120s
make failpoint-disable
make lint
git diff --check

Regression evidence: with production sources restored to target-branch base 54bb99ac21 via a Go overlay and only the standalone reader-cleanup regression/helpers added, the test fails at failed memory acquire should close readers before waiting for downstream release. With this backport, the regression and the scoped external-reader tests pass. Failpoints are disabled after testing.

Additional GCS test-only validation (Ready profile):

bash -n br/tests/br_gcs/run.sh
make lint
git diff --check

The script exactly matches the upstream source blob e8f1a8db5a63cb4d0a77eb45587c58f19d039fdf. Isolated, stubbed shell contract checks fail on the previous script and pass after this change: credential fields, default versus opt-in legacy command paths, endpoint arguments, and preserved row-count mismatch failure. These checks do not execute a real BR/GCS cluster; the complete integration case still requires CI. Default CI no longer runs legacy BR v4.0.8 coverage, matching the upstream test behavior.

Not verified locally: customer-scale S3 ingest, cluster upgrade/restart recovery, or full integration/RealTiKV suites.

  • No need to test
    • I checked and no code files have been changed.

Fix a global-sort ingestion stall when external data readers wait for memory held by downstream ingestion.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Data processing can now attempt memory allocation without waiting when capacity is unavailable, returning an error instead.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Data loading now waits for memory held by in-progress batches to be released before retrying, helping processing continue under memory pressure.
    • Failed reads now clear partial results, preventing incomplete data from being retained.
    • Readers are released while loading waits for downstream processing, helping avoid unnecessary resource usage.

📝 Walkthrough

The membuf package adds nonblocking allocation APIs. External readers use these APIs and clear accumulated output after read errors. The external engine tracks in-flight ingest data and retries batch reads after downstream data is released. The BR GCS test script updates credentials and endpoints, and gates legacy checks.

Changes: Memory allocation and external loading

Layer / File(s) Summary
Nonblocking membuf allocation
br/pkg/membuf/limiter.go, br/pkg/membuf/buffer.go, br/pkg/membuf/buffer_test.go
The limiter and buffer add nonblocking acquisition and allocation APIs. Tests cover unavailable quota and verify that a failed allocation leaves buffer state and limiter quota unchanged.
Reader allocation handling
pkg/lightning/backend/external/byte_reader.go, pkg/lightning/backend/external/reader.go, pkg/lightning/backend/external/byte_reader_test.go, pkg/lightning/backend/external/BUILD.bazel
External readers use nonblocking buffer allocation and return allocation errors. Read errors clear accumulated output state. Tests cover a concurrent read that cannot acquire memory.
Batch release and read retry
pkg/lightning/backend/external/engine.go, pkg/lightning/backend/external/engine_test.go, pkg/lightning/backend/external/iter_test.go
The engine tracks in-flight ingest data and retries reads after release signals. Final data release invokes a callback. Tests cover retry behavior, wait logging, and reader closure while waiting.

BR GCS test script

Layer / File(s) Summary
GCS credentials and legacy test gating
br/tests/br_gcs/run.sh
The script adds credential fields and changes current-version backup and restore endpoints. Legacy backup, restore, and row-count checks run only when TEST_LEGACY_BR_GCS is "true".

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 55c6f

The GCS backup and restore test can fail against its emulator. Restore the API path in both endpoints before relying on that test; this is a bounded test-workflow risk.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 55c6f

The inspected changes do not demonstrate expanded privileges, credential exposure, or a new externally reachable interface. The main residual risk is concurrency and recovery behavior in the revised ingest pipeline, where memory-pressure retries depend on downstream cleanup.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The production change affects resource availability in external ingestion: configured object-store files feed engine-local buffers, which downstream region jobs consume. Retry can repeat reads of the same configured range. The inspected changes do not establish new tenant, service, or data-store authority; upstream input authorization and deployment-wide isolation remain outside the established coverage.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The routed credential and endpoint changes belong to a localhost, in-memory GCS emulator test. The added project and key identifiers are dummy metadata; the test key and localhost token URI predate this PR. Although the storage client accepts an explicitly configured endpoint, the changed harness supplies localhost rather than a new attacker-controlled destination.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The revised failure-containment path waits for reader workers to finish and cleans partial output before waiting on downstream release. The wait accepts cancellation and returns a quota error when it observes no in-flight data and no release signal. Final ingest cleanup uses compare-and-swap to prevent duplicate buffer destruction and duplicate release callbacks.

cloud.google.com/go/storage v1.39.1 option.WithEndpoint endpoint path storage/v1 client implementation

💡 Result:

In **`cloud.google.com/go/storage` v1.39.1**, `option.WithEndpoint` is treated as the endpoint override for the **JSON API** client. `NewClient` passes options to the HTTP transport, uses the selected endpoint (`ep`) to construct the raw `google.golang.org/api/storage/v1` service, and derives the XML host and scheme from it. Without an override, the default endpoint ends in `/storage/v1/`. ([github.com](https://github.com/googleapis/google-cloud-go/blob/storage/v1.39.1/storage/storage.go))

So include the API path in your custom endpoint, for example:

```go
option.WithEndpoint("http://localhost:8080/storage/v1/")
```

That is consistent with the implementation: it passes the chosen endpoint through to the generated raw client rather than appending `/storage/v1/` to a user-supplied endpoint. **Inference:** supplying only `http://localhost:8080` may make requests target the wrong paths. ([github.com](https://github.com/googleapis/google-cloud-go/blob/storage/v1.39.1/storage/storage.go))

One distinction: when `STORAGE_EMULATOR_HOST` is set, v1.39.1 explicitly sets its path to `storage/v1/` itself; that behavior is separate from a caller-provided `WithEndpoint`. github fsouza fake-gcs-server v1.44.0 routes /storage/v1/b API endpoint

💡 Result:

In **fsouza/fake-gcs-server v1.44.0**, `/storage/v1/b` is the JSON API’s bucket collection route:

- `GET /storage/v1/b` — list buckets
- `POST /storage/v1/b` — create a bucket

The same routes are registered under the `/storage/v1` prefix for the configured public-host matcher. The bucket-specific route `/storage/v1/b/{bucketName}` supports `GET` and `DELETE`. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/fsouza/fake-gcs-server/v1.44.0/fakestorage/server.go))

The v1.44.0 implementation is the source for these route details; the project README also shows `GET /storage/v1/b` as a working example. ([github.com](https://github.com/fsouza/fake-gcs-server?utm_source=openai))

Append /storage/v1/ to the current GCS endpoints.

NewGCSStorage passes the configured endpoint to option.WithEndpoint. In cloud.google.com/go/storage v1.39.1, this override is the complete JSON API base. The client does not append /storage/v1/. The current backup and restore commands therefore can request paths such as /b instead of the emulator’s /storage/v1/b, which breaks this test workflow.
