Closes #7986

Proposed changes

Flow runtimes are no longer returned to the shared pool after a flow template ran in them, so globals changed by one flow template do not reach the next one. Each flow template gets a clean runtime.

Proof

New test TestFlowRuntimeIsNotSharedAcrossTemplates runs two flow templates in sequence and checks that the second one sees a clean runtime. pkg/tmplexec/flow and pkg/js/compiler tests pass.

Checklist

  • Pull request is created against the dev branch
  • All checks passed (lint, unit/integration/regression tests etc.) with my changes
  • I have added tests that prove my fix is effective or that my feature works
  • I have added necessary documentation (if appropriate)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Flow templates now run with separate JavaScript runtimes rather than reusing a runtime across templates. This prevents one template’s execution state from carrying over to another and ensures subsequent templates can produce results reliably.

Walkthrough

Flow execution now returns JavaScript runtimes with reuse disabled. The PutJSRuntime comment describes the replacement behavior. A new test executes two flow templates in sequence and checks that the second returns results.

Flow Runtime Isolation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Disable runtime reuse for flow templates
pkg/tmplexec/flow/flow_executor.go, pkg/tmplexec/flow/vm.go, pkg/tmplexec/flow/flow_executor_test.go
ExecuteWithResults disables runtime reuse. The PutJSRuntime comment describes how reuse: false replaces the runtime. A new test runs two templates in sequence ten times and checks that the second returns results.

Flow runtimes are now discarded after use. The regression test could miss a return of the original defect, so deterministic coverage is a useful follow-up.

Explanation

Issue #7986 requires each flow template to run in a clean runtime. FlowExecutor.ExecuteWithResults now returns the runtime with reuse disabled. The PutJSRuntime documentation states that this discards the used runtime and provides a fresh runtime. TestFlowRuntimeIsNotSharedAcrossTemplates executes two templates in sequence and checks the second template after the first has run.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed production code prevents flow runtime reuse. The comment documents the runtime lifecycle. The new test verifies behavior. These changes directly support issue #7986 and introduce no demonstrated unrelated change.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 3 files.

Make the regression check independent of sync.Pool retention.

The test passes on the original defect whenever the pool does not return the first flow's runtime to the second flow. The first fixture contains // Export, so the original code keeps that runtime in the pool. The second flow then detects leaked globals only if sync.Pool.Get returns that same runtime. Go does not guarantee this. A Put can be dropped (for example, under the race detector) or cleared by GC, and Get can return a fresh runtime instead. The ten iterations make a silent pass less likely, but they do not remove the gap.

A deterministic check needs a controlled pool seam or a direct observation of the runtime passed to PutJSRuntime. The repository does not show an existing seam for this, so the exact change is not established. Make the check independent of pool retention before relying on this test as the guard for the leaked-globals regression.

Make the regression check around the two execute calls deterministic by adding a
controlled pool seam or observing the runtime passed to PutJSRuntime, then
ensure the second flow runs against the first flow’s runtime. Do not rely on
sync.Pool returning a retained runtime across iterations.
