What happened?
Environment
- OS: CentOS Linux 8
- Linux kernel: 4.18.0-348.7.1.el8_5.x86_64
- OpenScience version: 2.0.140
- Installation method: npm / other
- Architecture: x86_64
What happened
After upgrading to the latest OpenScience version, OpenScience no longer starts on my server.
The previous version(1.3.4) worked on the same server, but the newer version fails because the bundled runtime requires Linux kernel 5.1 or newer.
Error message
Linux kernel 4.18.0-348.7.1.el8_5.x86_64 is unsupported. OpenScience's bundled runtime requires kernel 5.1 or newer.
Upgrade the host kernel or run OpenScience on a newer VM. CentOS 7's stock 3.10 kernel is not supported.
Expected behavior
I expected the newer OpenScience version to run on the same Linux environment, or at least to provide a compatible runtime option for systems using Linux kernel 4.18.
Steps to reproduce
- Use a Linux server running kernel 4.18.0-348.7.1.el8_5.x86_64.
- Install the latest OpenScience release.
- Run:
- OpenScience exits with the kernel compatibility error above.
Additional context
This is an important compatibility issue for users running OpenScience on enterprise Linux systems, where upgrading the host kernel may not be possible because of system administration or compatibility constraints.
Could you clarify:
- What change introduced the Linux kernel >= 5.1 requirement?
- Is this requirement caused by the bundled runtime?
- Is there a supported way to run OpenScience on Linux kernel 4.18?
- Could a release using a compatible runtime be provided for older enterprise Linux systems?
Thank you.
