fix(engine): apply max parallelism cap to keyed NotInParallel tests - #7084
Conversation
ConstraintKeyScheduler started every test whose constraint keys were free without consulting --maximum-parallel-tests, so [NotInParallel] tests with distinct keys all ran at once. Keyed tests now take a slot from a semaphore sized to the same cap the unconstrained phase uses, acquired after their keys are held. Fixes #7074

The unconstrained and keyed NotInParallel phases (and dynamic test batches) run concurrently, but each drew from its own --maximum-parallel-tests budget, so a mixed suite could run up to twice the cap. Both paths now take a slot from one session-wide MaxParallelismLimiter, acquired just before entering TestRunner so a slot is never held while waiting on constraint keys and dependencies run inline in their dependent's slot. Also await the After(TestSession) hooks and static property disposal when the phases throw (fail-fast cancellation), so shared fixtures are not disposed while a session hook is still running.

The grouping sort does not define a relative order for these equal-priority tests. The keyed scheduler starts every distinct-key test, and each test then waits for the shared maximum-parallelism slot. If

…arallel-max-parallelism
… limiter Give the failing keyed test Critical priority so it takes the only parallelism slot first and fails while the other keyed tests are still queued, and assert that fail-fast cancels at least one of them. Make the MaxParallelismLimiter constructor parameter on ConstraintKeyScheduler required, so a missing limiter cannot silently fall back to a different cap than the engine's. …arallel-max-parallelism
…throw On the fail-fast path ExecuteAllPhasesAsync can throw (cancelled slot waits) before the dynamic queue is completed and awaited, so session teardown could dispose shared fixtures under a still-running dynamic test. Complete the queue and await the dynamic processing task on the exceptional path too. Also pass a MaxParallelismLimiter in ConstraintKeySchedulerTests, added on main.
Fixes #7074
Root cause
ConstraintKeySchedulerstarted every keyed[NotInParallel("key")]test as soon as its constraint keys were free. It never consulted the--maximum-parallel-tests/TUNIT_MAX_PARALLEL_TESTS/TUnitSettingscap. Unconstrained and[ParallelGroup]tests go throughParallel.ForEachAsyncwithMaxDegreeOfParallelism, so they were capped. Keyed tests with distinct keys were not, and all of them ran at once (8 concurrent with a cap of 2 in the issue's repro). An explicitParallelLimiterstill worked becauseTestRunneracquires it.Fix
ConstraintKeySchedulernow holds a lazily createdSemaphoreSlimsized to the resolved max parallelism. Each keyed test takes a slot after it holds its constraint keys and before it entersTestRunner, and releases the slot before its keys are released.TestRunnerregisters the dependency-dedup ledger entry means a dependent that reaches the test first still runs it inline. It does not wait behind a slot.Lazy<int>built inTUnitServiceProviderand shared byTestSchedulerandConstraintKeyScheduler, so both schedulers use the same value and it is logged once.GetMaxParallelismis nowinternal, and nothing else in its logic changed.WaitAsynccompletes synchronously, so this adds no allocation in that case. The change only affects scheduling, so it behaves the same in source-generated and reflection modes.Tests
tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/7074: eight distinct-key[NotInParallel]tests, plus the same set inside a[ParallelGroup](the constrained-group keyed path). Each test records peak concurrency. It asserts against the cap only whenTUNIT_7074_EXPECTED_MAX_CONCURRENCYis set, so normal suite runs are unaffected.tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/Scheduling/KeyedNotInParallelMaxParallelismTests: runs both classes with--maximum-parallel-tests 2and expects 8/8 passing.--maximum-parallel-tests 2failed with "Observed 8 concurrent keyed tests" in both source-gen and reflection modes. After the fix, both classes pass 8/8 in both modes.KeyedNotInParallelMaxParallelismTests,KeyedNotInParallelCrossPhaseTests,ConstraintKeySchedulerConcurrencyTests,GlobalNotInParallelDependsOnTests,ParallelismValidationEngineTestsandTransitiveDependenciesTestsall pass.TUnit.Enginebuilds with 0 errors for all TFMs, including netstandard2.0.
