Summary

Before: [MethodDataSource(nameof(Data), Arguments = new object?[] { null })] failed to build with TUnit0001: Attribute argument types 'object' don't match method parameter types 'int'. This happened even when the data source had a string? overload, or only a string? / int? parameter. Both runtime modes accept that code.

After: a null argument matches any parameter that can hold null: reference types, Nullable<T>, and type parameters without a struct/unmanaged constraint. Overload selection picks the overload that accepts it. A null passed to a non-nullable value type is still reported, and the message now shows null instead of object.

Cause

TestDataAnalyzer reduced each Arguments element to TypedConstant.Type. For a null element of an object?[], that type is object. object has no implicit conversion to string or int, so every overload failed MatchesParameters, and the analyzer fell back to the first method with that name and reported TUnit0001 against it.

Fix

  • Keep the TypedConstants, so a null element can be told apart from a real object.
  • Add a shared ArgumentsMatchParameterTypes check that both overload selection and the final diagnostic use, with null handled by CanAcceptNull.
  • Overload matching tries overloads whose parameters match the Arguments exactly first, and only then ignores a trailing CancellationToken parameter, as the final check does. An earlier Data(int, CancellationToken) therefore no longer hides Data(int).
  • The argument count must equal the parameter count before values are compared, so a missing argument is not mistaken for a null one.
  • A null argument does not match a parameter typed by a generic method's type parameter, because neither mode can infer the type from null.

Merge order

Merge #7143 first. This PR only changes the analyzer. For overloads such as NullRows(int)/NullRows(string?), the execution paths that pick the null-accepting overload (reflection mode's ResolveDataSourceMethodWithNullArgument and the generator's null-aware overload scoring) are added in #7143, along with cross-mode tests for those cases. On main alone, the analyzer would accept that pair while the generated code still calls the first overload. After both are merged, the #pragma warning disable TUnit0001 and the #7168 comments in #7143's DataSourceOverloadParityTests and GenericMethodNonTupleMethodDataSourceTests can be removed.

Tests

  • New tests in tests/TUnit.Analyzers.Tests/MethodDataSourceAnalyzerTests.cs: null into a string? parameter, null into an int? parameter, the issue's int/string? overload pair, and null into an int parameter (still flagged, with null in the message). All 4 fail on main and pass with the fix.
  • Review follow-ups: a missing argument for a string? parameter is flagged, an exact overload wins over an earlier CancellationToken overload, and null into a method type parameter is flagged.
  • Full TUnit.Analyzers.Tests suite on net10.0, net9.0 and net8.0: 873 passed, 1 skipped, 0 failed on each.
  • tests/TUnit.TestProject builds on net10.0 with no new analyzer diagnostics.

Fixes #7168

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved method data-source overload resolution for null arguments.
    • Null arguments are now correctly accepted for reference-type and nullable value-type parameters.
    • Null arguments are rejected for non-nullable value-type parameters with the appropriate diagnostic.
    • Overload selection now favors methods compatible with nullable arguments.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for null argument validation and overload resolution.

…arameters

TUnit0001 compared each Arguments element by TypedConstant.Type, which is
object for a null element, so a null argument failed against every
parameter type and overload selection fell back to the first overload.
A null argument now matches any parameter that can hold null, as in
reflection mode's binder and the source generator.

Explanation

Issue #7168 requires null MethodDataSource arguments to match reference types and Nullable<T>, and requires overload selection to choose an accepting overload. TestDataAnalyzer now preserves TypedConstant values, uses CanAcceptNull for null matching, and applies the shared ArgumentsMatchParameterTypes check during overload selection and diagnostic validation. The implementation also rejects null for non-nullable value types and reports null in TUnit0001. The added tests cover reference types, Nullable<int>, overload selection, and rejection for int.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes are limited to TestDataAnalyzer argument matching and focused analyzer tests. The shared matching logic and trailing CancellationToken alignment support the linked issue's argument validation behavior. No unrelated production or test changes are present in the reviewed diff.

[Medium impact] The change affects compile-time checks for method data sources.

The PR is not ready to merge because the previously reported null-overload execution failure remains.

Summary

Updates MethodDataSource argument checks to distinguish null values from ordinary objects.

  • Method data-source checks now match null to parameters that can accept it.

Review

This is a focused fix for #7168, and I found no blocking issues.

  • Keeping the TypedConstants instead of reducing them to .Type is the right fix. A null element's Type is the array element type (object), so the type alone could never tell null from a real object.
  • ArgumentsMatchParameterTypes is now shared by overload selection (MatchesParameters) and the final diagnostic. This removes the earlier mismatch where the two checks could disagree, which is also why the CancellationToken handling now agrees between them.
  • CanAcceptNull covers the right cases:
    • reference types and Nullable<T> accept null;
    • non-nullable value types are rejected;
    • type parameters are rejected only when they have a struct or unmanaged constraint.
  • The new tests cover the reference type, int?, overload selection and still-flagged int cases. The diagnostic message now shows null instead of object, and the last test asserts that.

Minor, non-blocking suggestions:

  • CanAcceptNull treats an unconstrained T as null-accepting. That matches runtime behaviour, but a test with a where T : struct data source method would pin down the constraint branch.
  • A null mixed with other arguments, such as { 1, null }, would be a cheap extra test for the per-element logic.

LGTM.

…verloads for MethodDataSource

- A missing argument reached the null check as default(TypedConstant),
whose IsNull is true, so too few Arguments passed for a parameter that
accepts null. Compare the counts first, as the check did before.
- Overload selection now tries overloads whose parameters match the
Arguments exactly before ignoring a trailing CancellationToken, so an
earlier Data(int, CancellationToken) no longer hides Data(int).
- A null argument no longer matches a parameter typed by a generic
method's type parameter: neither mode can infer the type from null.

Review

The change looks correct and well scoped. I reviewed the diff by reading it and did not build or run the tests.

  • Keeping TypedConstants lets a null element be told apart from a real object. This fixes the root cause of the false TUnit0001.
  • ArgumentsMatchParameterTypes is now shared by overload selection and the final diagnostic, so the two can no longer disagree.
  • The up-front length check keeps the old behaviour. ZipAll used to pad the shorter side with defaults, which failed the conversion check anyway. It also stops a missing argument (default(TypedConstant).IsNull == true) from passing as null.
  • CanAcceptNull handles reference types, Nullable<T>, and unconstrained type parameters. It rejects method-level type parameters, which neither mode can infer from null.
  • The exact-match-first, then trailing-CancellationToken ordering fixes the earlier-overload-hides-later-overload problem.
  • The tests cover the positive, negative and edge cases, including the null text in the diagnostic message.

Minor points, none blocking:

  • ArgumentsMatchParameterTypes is called twice per overload, and the Select and WithoutCancellationTokenParameter calls allocate each time. Overload counts are tiny, so this is fine.
  • Type-parameter and params parameters are not exercised in the tests. The existing HasImplicitConversionOrGenericParameter path should cover them.
  • As the description says, merge fix(sourcegen): infer generic method types from any MethodDataSource row shape #7143 first, so the analyzer does not accept overload pairs that the execution paths still resolve to the first overload.

LGTM.
