feat(playwright): failure screenshots/traces and shared-browser disconnect diagnostics - #7309
New attribute for a method, a class or an assembly. It is an IScopedAttribute, so the closest one applies. Options: path (default playwright-artifacts), Screenshot (default true) and Trace (default true).
It covers contexts created by ContextTest/PageTest (BrowserTest.NewContext) and by per-test ContextFixture/PageFixture. Tracing starts when the context is created, with screenshots, snapshots and sources.
If the result is anything other than Passed or Skipped, it saves a full-page screenshot of each open page and the trace zip, and attaches them to the result. Passing tests call Tracing.StopAsync() with no path, so nothing is written.
Capture runs before any context or page closes:
BrowserTearDown captures each context before it closes it.
PlaywrightRecordingScope runs every capture before it disposes fixtures.
ContextFixture.DisposeAsync captures first. Captures are idempotent.
File names are <FNV-1a hash of TestId>_<sanitized display name>, plus -attemptN for retries and -pageN when a test has several open pages.
This differs from the issue. The issue suggested <TestId>_<DisplayName>. The raw TestId repeats the namespace, class and parameter types and easily breaks MAX_PATH, so I used a stable 8-hex hash of it. The display name is truncated to 80 characters.
Names are reserved with FileMode.CreateNew, so concurrent writers never collide or overwrite each other.
Captured fixtures use the same per-attempt lifecycle as [RecordVideo]: fresh context and page each retry, cleanup at test end.
Difference from [RecordVideo]: a fixture shared between tests is skipped, not rejected, so [assembly: CaptureOnFailure] is safe with shared contexts.
If a capture fails (for example, the browser is already dead), the reason goes to the test's error output. Capture never throws.
Shared-browser disconnect diagnostics
PlaywrightBrowserMonitor subscribes to IBrowser.Disconnected for browsers launched by BrowserFixture and by the BrowserTest worker. A close that TUnit makes itself is marked as expected.
When a fixture cannot create its context or page after a disconnect, it now throws InvalidOperationException("The shared chromium browser disconnected at <UTC time>, before this failure. ..."). The Playwright error is the inner exception.
When a test fails with a PlaywrightException (including TargetClosedException) after a browser it used disconnected, the test gets the same note in its error output, once. PageFixture/ContextFixture do this as ITestEndEventReceivers, and BrowserTearDown does it on the inheritance path.
New public API:
BrowserFixture.DisconnectedAt
TUnitPlaywrightSettings.RelaunchDisconnectedBrowser (opt-in). When set, a shared BrowserFixture calls InitializeAsync again before the next context, guarded by a semaphore. The BrowserTest path already relaunches after a failed test.
Other
Moved the file-name sanitizer out of PlaywrightVideoRecorder into PlaywrightArtifactNames so both features share it.

relaunch
All 85 Playwright* unit tests pass on net8.0 and net10.0.
Playwright_Library_Has_No_API_Changes snapshots were updated for every TFM (net8.0, net9.0, net10.0, net472). The diff contains only the new API.
Manual end-to-end check against real Chromium (temporary test, not committed): the PNG (20 KB) and the trace zip (11 entries) were written and attached, and closing the browser gave TargetClosedException with the disconnect note.
Doc snippets were not compiled locally, because Verify-DocSnippets.ps1 needs pipeline packages. CI covers them.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added opt-in Playwright failure captures with screenshots and traces. Passing and skipped tests do not produce capture files.
Added configurable artifact paths and capture options, with distinct filenames for retries and tests with matching names.
Added clearer diagnostics for unexpected browser disconnections and an option to relaunch a disconnected shared browser before creating a new context.
Bug Fixes
Teardown and test-hook failures are reflected in test results before late test-end handlers run.
Capture save errors are reported without preventing resource cleanup.
Documentation
Documented capture behavior, configuration, fixture limitations, and browser-disconnection handling.
Clarified lifecycle receiver ordering, framework differences, and how late receivers observe or affect test results.
Engine change (TestExecutor): when an [After(Test)] hook or an early test-end receiver fails, the engine now records Failed before the late test-end receivers run. Before this, those receivers saw the body's Passed result. Overridden results are left alone. TestStateManager.MarkFailed still records the final result with every exception. The new LateReceiverSeesTeardownFailure7289Tests covers this. Per-test outcomes of EventReceiverStageTests, LastTestEventReceiverTests, OverrideResultsTests and Bugs._2804 match the previous head.
BrowserTearDown hands contexts to test end while the result still says Passed, so a teardown failure later in the hook chain is still captured.
Capture never throws, including for an invalid path, and resources still close.
Pending fixture setup finishes before captures are collected, so a cancelled setup still gets screenshots before its pages close.
Tests that reuse a shared fixture now get the disconnect note.
Sanitize rejects characters that are invalid on Windows on every OS.
Fixture capture is disabled on netstandard2.0, which cannot read whether a fixture was declared shared.
BrowserTest workers stay out of the pool until deferred captures have closed their contexts.
A shared PageFixture gets a new page when its captured ContextFixture is recreated per attempt.
Relaunching a disconnected browser closes the dead one first.
docs/docs/writing-tests/lifecycle.md: the test-level order was wrong. Early start receivers run before [BeforeEvery(Test)], and [AfterEvery(Test)] runs before the Late end receivers. The page also now says that late end receivers see teardown failures.
…hared-browser disconnects
Add [CaptureOnFailure] (method, class or assembly). It starts Playwright tracing for
contexts created by ContextTest/PageTest and per-test ContextFixture/PageFixture.
When a test does not pass, it saves a full-page screenshot of each open page and the
trace zip and attaches them, named by test id hash + display name + retry attempt.
Passing tests discard the trace and write nothing.
BrowserFixture and the BrowserTest worker browser now record unexpected disconnects.
A fixture that cannot create its context or page names the disconnect time as the root
cause, and failed tests with Playwright errors get the same note in their error output.
TUnitPlaywrightSettings.RelaunchDisconnectedBrowser lets a shared BrowserFixture
relaunch a crashed browser for later tests.

Explanation
The title "feat(playwright): failure screenshots/traces and shared-browser disconnect diagnostics" matches the main changes in the changeset. The PR adds the [CaptureOnFailure] attribute, which captures failure screenshots and Playwright traces, and adds shared-browser disconnect tracking through BrowserFixture.DisconnectedAt and the RelaunchDisconnectedBrowser setting. The title names both main features. It does not mention the engine change for late test-end receivers, but the PR objectives describe that change as secondary. The title is 86 characters, which is longer than the concise style preferred, but it stays clear and specific.

A rabbit saves the trace, Screenshots show the failing page, Names stay clear and unique, A disconnect leaves its time, A fresh browser takes its place.
Overall this is a well-structured PR. Capture ordering is handled in all three places: BrowserTearDown, PlaywrightRecordingScope and ContextFixture.DisposeAsync. CompleteAsync is idempotent. The capture path never throws. File names are reserved with CreateNew, and the hash-based naming is a sensible deviation from the issue. The 17 unit tests cover the interesting edges, and the public API snapshots are updated for every TFM.
Non-blocking observations:
Relaunch leaks the dead browser.GetBrowserForNewContextAsync calls InitializeAsync() and replaces Browser without disposing the old IBrowser. The process is gone, but the Playwright-side objects and the Disconnected subscription stay alive until GC. A best-effort MarkClosing(old) plus CloseAsync() in a try/catch before relaunching would be tidier.
DisconnectedAt is not cleared by a relaunch. It reads from the monitor of the currentBrowser, so this works. Say so in the XML doc, so consumers know the value resets to null after a relaunch.
ReportIfDisconnected runs from the BrowserTest teardown hook and from the fixtures' OnTestEnd. The ReportedKey guard makes that safe. A single entry point, such as PlaywrightRecordingScope, would be easier to reason about than three call sites, if you ever consolidate.
State-bag keys and ConcurrentDictionary<PlaywrightBrowserMonitor, byte>. This works. A small typed holder class would avoid the cast and the byte placeholder.
OnTestEnd on the attribute delegates to PlaywrightRecordingScope.CompleteAsync. Confirm that this is a no-op when the scope already ran in the teardown hook. The idempotency suggests it is.
No blocking issues found. LGTM pending CI, which also compiles the doc snippets.
[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no blocking issues remain.
Summary
Adds Playwright screenshots and traces for failed tests, browser-disconnect notes, and optional browser relaunch.
Playwright tests can attach screenshots and traces when they fail.
Shared Playwright browsers report unexpected disconnects and can relaunch on request.
Late test-end receivers see teardown failures as failed results.

- Engine: when [After(Test)] hooks or early test-end receivers fail, record the Failed
result before the late receivers run, so they see the outcome that will be reported.
[CaptureOnFailure] uses this to keep artifacts for teardown failures. BrowserTearDown now
defers capture to test end while the result still says Passed.
- Capture never throws, including for invalid paths, and contexts close regardless.
- Pending fixture setup settles before captures are collected, so cancelled setup still
gets screenshots before pages close.
- Tests that reuse a shared fixture record its browser, so they get the disconnect note.
- Sanitize rejects Windows-invalid file name characters on every OS.
- netstandard2.0 cannot read declared sharing, so fixture capture is .NET-only there.
I read the diff, mainly PlaywrightFailureCapture, the BrowserTest.BrowserTearDown change and the TestExecutor change. I didn't run the tests. No blocking issues.
What looks good
Capture is idempotent, never throws, and always runs before the context closes. The CompleteAsync lock plus the cached _completion task handles the several teardown paths.
FileMode.CreateNew reservation with a hashed prefix avoids both collisions and MAX_PATH problems. Zero-byte placeholders are cleaned up.
Failures to capture go to the test's error output and don't replace the real failure.
The public API snapshots are updated for every TFM, and the PR adds engine, unit and test-project coverage.
Things to consider
Engine change affects every test, not just Playwright.TestExecutor now overwrites a Passed result with Failed before the late TestEnd receivers run, whenever a teardown hook or an early receiver threw. This is the right way to let [CaptureOnFailure] see teardown failures. But it changes what any late receiver observes, and it builds a TestExecutionException that TestStateManager.MarkFailed builds again afterwards. I'd pull the construction into one helper so the two can't drift apart. The new LateReceiverSeesTeardownFailure7289Tests is the right regression guard. A one-line note in the docs or changelog that late receivers now see teardown failures would also help.
Deferred close in BrowserTearDown. When the test hasn't failed yet, the context close is deferred to the recording scope (Register(..., 2)). The magic priority 2 is only meaningful relative to the other registrations. A named constant or a comment next to it would stop a later change from reordering it silently. The context also stays open a bit longer than before. That's fine, but if the scope is never disposed (for example, a hard abort), the browser context leaks until the browser closes.
netstandard2.0 gap. On netstandard2.0, fixtures can't be recognised as shared, so only ContextTest and PageTest are captured. This is documented. A compile-time #if that explains the reason at the code site would be cheap insurance.
TestHasFailed is a snapshot. It reads Execution.Result at one moment. If a later stage can still fail the test after capture ran (for example, a late receiver failing), the artifacts won't be written. The engine change closes the main case. I'd note this limitation in the attribute remarks.
Overall this is a well-reasoned feature. I'd merge after considering item 1.

Replies to the two Claude reviews (13:04 and 13:31).
First review
Relaunch leaked the dead browser. Fixed in afb08ad: GetBrowserForNewContextAsync marks the old browser as closing and calls CloseAsync() in a best-effort try/catch before relaunching. DisconnectedSharedBrowserIsRelaunchedWhenEnabled now asserts the close.
DisconnectedAt after relaunch. Documented in afb08ad: the remarks say it reflects the current Browser and returns null again after a relaunch.
Three ReportIfDisconnected call sites. Left as is. The call sites differ on purpose: BrowserTearDown covers the inheritance path, and the fixtures' OnTestEnd covers composition. Only top-level injected properties receive events, so each fixture type reports for itself. A single scope entry point would need the scope on every test, including tests without [CaptureOnFailure]. The ReportedKey guard keeps it to one note.
Typed holder. Done in afb08ad: a private UsedBrowsers class replaces ConcurrentDictionary<PlaywrightBrowserMonitor, byte>.
Attribute OnTestEnd after teardown. Confirmed no-op: PlaywrightRecordingScope.CompleteAsync takes and clears its lists under the lock, and each capture's CompleteAsync caches its task.
Second review
Engine change affects every test. Agreed it is cross-cutting, so I documented it in afb08ad: docs/docs/writing-tests/lifecycle.md now says late end receivers see Failed after a teardown failure. While there, I fixed that page's test-level order, which was wrong in four places. The engine runs Early start receivers before[BeforeEvery(Test)], and [AfterEvery(Test)]before the Late end receivers. On the shared helper: I left the two constructions separate. The interim exception only exists so that late receivers see the failure. TestStateManager.MarkFailed always replaces it with a result built from the exception that is actually thrown, so drift cannot reach the reported result.
Magic 2. Fixed in afb08ad with PlaywrightCleanupOrder (Page, Context, DeferredContext, WorkerRelease). On hard aborts: a deferred context lives only until the browser closes, so the leak is bounded. The worker now also stays out of the pool until then (see the Greptile thread).
netstandard2.0 #if. The #else branch in PlaywrightFixtureLifecycle already explains the reason at the code site.
TestHasFailed is a snapshot. Documented in afb08ad: the attribute remarks say the decision uses the result after all [After(Test)]/[AfterEvery(Test)] hooks, and that a test-end receiver failing after capture ran still fails the test, but its artifacts were already discarded.
Review of #7309 (CaptureOnFailure for Playwright). I read the diff but did not build it or run any tests. I focused on PlaywrightFailureCapture and the TestExecutor change, and did not read PlaywrightBrowserMonitor or the fixture lifecycle files in detail.
The design looks sound. Capture runs before contexts close, CompleteAsync is idempotent, capture failures never throw or hide the real failure, and artifact names (hash plus truncated display name, reserved with CreateNew) avoid MAX_PATH and collisions.
Points to consider:
TestExecutor: the interim Failed result replacement exists only so late receivers see the real outcome, and MarkFailed records the final one. A comment or a test assertion pinning that would guard against accidental refactors.
If Tracing.StopAsync(Path) throws, the trace is probably left running. Confirm that context disposal tolerates this.
TestHasFailed is evaluated at capture time. Make sure every capture path (BrowserTearDown, PlaywrightRecordingScope, ContextFixture.DisposeAsync) runs only after the result is final, including for timeouts and cancellations. A test for those cases would help.
RecordVideo and CaptureOnFailure keep separate registries. A shared artifact abstraction with a CompleteAsync method would reduce the places that need to know about both.
No blocking issues found. Public API snapshots for all TFMs are updated, and unit and engine tests are included.

Report browser disconnects after teardown failures are recorded.
If BrowserTearDown or a later after-test hook fails with a PlaywrightException, this call runs before the engine changes a passed result to failed. ReportIfDisconnected returns, and BrowserTest does not report again at test end. Add a late test-end reporting path so the failed test receives the disconnect note. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @src/TUnit.Playwright/BrowserTest.cs at line 132:
Add a late test-end reporting path in BrowserTest so
PlaywrightBrowserMonitor.ReportIfDisconnected runs after teardown and after-test
hook failures have updated the test result. Preserve the existing reporting call
and ensure a failed test receives the disconnect note even when the earlier call
ran before the result changed.

…e cleanup
After failure capture disposed a per-attempt ContextFixture, its lifecycle kept the
completed initialization. A later test reusing a shared PageFixture got that cached
initialization back with a null Context, and page setup threw. Clear the cached
initialization once per-attempt cleanup disposes the fixture.
Also: pin that the reported result keeps the teardown exception in the engine test, and
qualify the lifecycle docs (Stage ordering is .NET 8+ only; late end receivers see the
result before the late stage, not necessarily the final one).
Pin the interim result. Done in ab27b86. LateReceiverSeesTeardownFailure7289Tests now also asserts that the reported error message contains the teardown exception (Teardown failed on purpose). That fails if a refactor lets the interim Failed result become the reported one. The TestExecutor code already has a comment on why the interim result exists and that TestStateManager.MarkFailed records the final one.
Tracing.StopAsync(Path) throws. No change needed. Tracing belongs to the browser context, and closing the context ends it. Capture catches the exception and reports it to the test's error output. The caller then closes the context in every path: BrowserTearDown closes it outside the capture call, and the scope disposes fixtures after captures. CaptureFailureIsReportedWithoutFailingTeardown and the invalid-path tests check that the context is still closed after capture fails.
Capture only after the result is final, including timeouts and cancellations.TestExecutor sets Timeout, Cancelled and Failed results before any test-end receiver or After(Test) hook runs. Teardown failures are recorded before the late stage since the earlier commit. BrowserTearDown captures immediately only when the result has already failed; otherwise it defers to the late-stage scope. ContextFixture.DisposeAsync runs after test end. Unit coverage: BrowserTestAttachesScreenshotAndTraceWhenTestDoesNotPass runs for Failed, Timeout and Cancelled, and CancelledSetupStillCapturesBeforePagesClose covers cancellation during setup. The remaining gap, a late receiver failing after capture ran, is documented in the attribute remarks.
Shared artifact abstraction for [RecordVideo] and [CaptureOnFailure]. Not in this PR. The two have opposite timing: capture must finish before the context closes, but video files only exist after it closes. PlaywrightRecordingScope already orders them in one place (captures first, then disposal, which finalizes videos). A shared interface would need two hooks per artifact. I'd rather revisit that if a third artifact type arrives.
Solid PR. I read PlaywrightFailureCapture and the TestExecutor change. I did not run the tests.
What looks good
Capture is idempotent through the lock and the cached _completion task. It never throws, and failures go to the test's error output instead of replacing the real failure.
Reserving file names with FileMode.CreateNew avoids collisions. Using a hash of the TestId keeps paths short and sidesteps MAX_PATH.
Capture runs before contexts and pages close, in BrowserTearDown, PlaywrightRecordingScope and ContextFixture.DisposeAsync.
The engine fix is narrow. It only replaces a Passed, non-overridden result when teardown hooks or early receivers failed, so late receivers see the real outcome. That is what makes the capture trigger on teardown failures.
Suggestions (non-blocking)
In TestExecutor, the result is rewritten with new TestExecutionException(null, hookExceptions, earlyStageExceptions), and TestStateManager.MarkFailed later overwrites it. If MarkFailed rebuilt the exception from the same inputs through one shared helper, the two couldn't drift apart.
The tests in LateReceiverSeesTeardownFailure7289Tests cover this change. Please confirm they run in both source-generated and reflection modes, since AGENTS.md requires identical behavior in both.
In SaveAsync, the empty-placeholder cleanup swallows IOException and UnauthorizedAccessException silently. That is fine for cleanup, but a stray zero-byte file in the artifacts directory would be hard to explain. A short comment saying it's best-effort would help.

Overall this is a well-designed feature. Cleanup ordering is explicit (capture before any context or page closes), capture never throws, file names are collision-safe (FileMode.CreateNew), and the MAX_PATH reasoning behind the hashed TestId is sound. Docs and public API snapshots are updated, and there are tests. I only skimmed the diff and didn't build or run the tests. These are the points I'd look at before merging.
1. CodeRabbit's open finding: recreated context on a shared PageFixture PlaywrightFixtureLifecycle.InitializeAsync sets _owner ??= context only once. If a shared parent fixture is reused, a later test's recreated context may not be tied to capture and cleanup registration for that test attempt. Please check this path, or reply on the thread with evidence that it can't happen. The CompleteAsync reset of _initialization suggests it is mostly handled, but I couldn't see a test for it.
2. Mutable CaptureOwner / ClearCaptureOwner() hand-off CaptureOwner is set under _lock but read by the fixture outside it, and ClearCaptureOwner() exists only to stop stale reads. Passing state between the lifecycle and the fixture through a mutable property is fragile. If attempts overlap (a retry starting while cleanup from the previous attempt is still running), the fixture could read the wrong owner. A better design is for InitializeAsync to return or pass an immutable per-attempt object (owner, attempt, options) that the fixture holds, instead of re-reading shared state.
3. netstandard2.0 silently disables fixture capture const bool capture = false on non-NET targets means [CaptureOnFailure] does nothing for ContextFixture and PageFixture there, with no message. The reasoning in the comment is sound. But a user who applies [assembly: CaptureOnFailure] gets no artifacts and no explanation. Document this in the attribute's XML docs and the Playwright docs page, or write a one-time note to the test output.
4. Engine change (TestExecutor.cs)
The change is small. Please confirm it behaves the same in source-generated and reflection modes, as AGENTS.md requires. LateReceiverSeesTeardownFailure7289Tests looks like the right coverage, so a note in the PR description about which modes it ran in would help.
Minor
An 8-hex FNV-1a hash leaves a collision window in a large suite. CreateNew makes a collision harmless, though a colliding name gets a suffix, which makes the artifact name less predictable. Acceptable as is.
Good work. Please address #1 before merge, and consider #2 as a follow-up refactor.

Propagate shared lifetime to the nested ContextFixture.

Propagate shared lifetime to the nested ContextFixture.
PageFixture can be shared per class while its nested ContextFixture defaults to SharedType.None. If the first test initializes the context before the second test is tracked, capture registers cleanup for that context. The first test then closes it at test end, while a concurrent second test can still use the shared page and its closed context.
The current test starts the second initialization only after the first capture completes. It does not cover this overlap. Propagate the parent PageFixture sharing scope to the nested context before enabling per-test capture. Keep the default ContextFixture scope unchanged for private PageFixture instances.

Update the shared PageFixture setup so its nested ContextFixture receives the
parent’s sharing scope before per-test capture is enabled; keep ContextFixture
at SharedType.None for private PageFixture instances. Locate the setup around
scope.SetResult(state).
