fix(html-reporter): scope report state per session when sessions overlap - #7400
HtmlReporter kept every result in one process-wide dictionary, so in MTP server mode a second overlapping session's start wiped the first session's results, and each report could contain the other session's tests.
Of the two options in the issue, this keys the state by SessionUid rather than documenting the limitation:
Test updates and unobserved task exceptions live in a per-session SessionReportState. ConsumeAsync routes each message by its SessionUid, and each session's report is built only from its own entries.
Process-wide state (activity collection, TraceRegistry, the GitHub reporter's session state, the resolved enabled setting) is reset only when the first of a set of overlapping sessions starts, and released only when the last one finishes. An earlier finisher no longer disposes the collector or clears trace IDs that a running session still needs.
The last finisher detaches and stops the activity collector under the state lock before it generates its report. A session that starts meanwhile creates its own collector instead of disposing the one being read, and it can claim the process-wide ActivityCollector.Current and ExternalSpanSink slots.
TraceRegistry is cleared only when no session is active and no finishing session still has to read it for its report.
Messages for a session that has not started or has already finished are dropped instead of recreating its state.
Known limitation (documented in code): while sessions overlap, they share one ActivityListener, so the trace view of a report can include the other session's spans. Test results, summaries and unobserved exceptions are per session. Overlapping sessions also share the configured output path, as before.
The disabled-report path also retains trace associations until no session is active and no finishing report still needs them. The HTML report guide explicitly documents the non-overlap assumption for tracing and output files.
HTML reports now keep test results and unobserved task exceptions separate when sessions overlap.
Reports retain the final test update when available, and late messages no longer recreate state for finished sessions.
Trace and activity data remains available until all active sessions have finished, supporting report generation across overlapping sessions.
Documentation
Clarified that overlapping sessions share activity collection and report settings, traces may include activity from another session, and the last report written replaces the previous file. Separate report files and sequential sessions are recommended for isolated traces.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
HtmlReporter now stores test updates and unobserved-task exceptions per session. It builds each report from that session’s state and coordinates shared trace and activity-collector cleanup while sessions overlap.

The reporter creates state for each session and stores updates and unobserved-task exceptions in that state. It ignores messages for sessions without active state. Tests cover separate results and exceptions for overlapping sessions, and late messages for finished sessions.
Session report construction and cleanup src/TUnit.Engine/Reporters/Html/HtmlReporter.cs, tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/HtmlReporterConfigurationTests.cs, docs/docs/guides/html-report.md
Session finishing coordinates trace-registry and collector cleanup. Cleanup waits until no active sessions or report reads remain. Tests cover overlapping-session lifecycle behavior. The guide documents shared trace collection and output-path behavior for overlapping sessions.

Explanation
Issue #7298 requires session-safe results, unobserved exceptions, and activity handling, or clear documentation that overlapping sessions are unsupported. HtmlReporter now keys test updates and unobserved exceptions by SessionUid, drops messages outside active session state, and builds each report from that session's entries. The implementation coordinates shared activity state across session lifecycles. The HTML guide documents the remaining shared activity listener and output-path limitations. The added tests cover result isolation, exception isolation, late messages, collector lifetime, and trace cleanup.

Keying results and unobserved exceptions by SessionUid is the right choice. It fixes the cross-session wipe at its root, where documenting the limitation would not. The ownership rules for the process-wide state are clear: reset when the first session starts, release when the last one finishes. Detaching the collector under the lock before generating the report is a good touch. The tests cover the three scenarios that matter.
I only read the diff and did not run the tests. Points worth considering:
GetSessionState can leak or resurrect state. It uses GetOrAdd, so a TestNodeUpdateMessage or UnobservedTaskExceptionsData that arrives after OnTestSessionFinishingAsync removed the session re-creates an entry that nothing removes. The same happens if a message arrives before OnTestSessionStartingAsync. The start call then replaces the entry, which is fine, but a late arrival after finish stays in _sessions for the life of the process. In server mode the process is long-lived, so this grows slowly. Consider using TryGetValue in ConsumeAsync and dropping messages for sessions that are not active. Alternatively, only create state in OnTestSessionStartingAsync.
BuildReportData(string) is test-only surface with a side effect. It assigns state.Collector = _activityCollector and falls back to a throwaway SessionReportState when the session is unknown, so tests can silently build a report from empty state. Production code instead assigns Collector under the lock in OnTestSessionFinishingAsync. Passing the collector as a parameter to the private BuildReportData(SessionReportState, ActivityCollector?) would remove the mutable Collector property on the state class and make the data flow explicit.
The collector is shared when sessions overlap.sessionState.Collector = ownedCollector ?? _activityCollector means an earlier finisher reads a collector that is still running. The code comment documents the resulting cross-session spans in the trace view. A possible follow-up is to filter spans by session or trace ID, if SessionUid can be attached to activities.
Shared output path. Overlapping sessions write to the same output path, so the last writer wins. The PR notes this, but a per-session suffix would be a cheap improvement for server mode. It is fine to leave for a follow-up.
None of these are blockers; item 1 is the one I'd address before merge.
[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable issues were found.

GetSessionState can leak or resurrect state. Fixed. ConsumeAsync now uses TryGetValue and drops test updates and unobserved exceptions for sessions that have not started or have already finished. State is created only in OnTestSessionStartingAsync. A new test, Messages_For_A_Finished_Session_Do_Not_Recreate_Its_State, covers this.
BuildReportData(string) has a side effect. Fixed. The mutable Collector property is gone. The private BuildReportData(SessionReportState, ActivityCollector?) takes the collector as a parameter, and the test helper no longer mutates state. It still falls back to empty state for an unknown session, because tests use it to read report metadata such as the assembly name without a session.
Shared collector when sessions overlap. Left as the documented limitation. Filtering spans per session would need a session ID on activities, which goes beyond this fix.
Shared output path. Left as before. Overlapping sessions already shared the path before this PR, so a per-session suffix is a separate behaviour change.
The same push also fixes the Codex and Greptile threads: the detached collector is now stopped under the lock, and TraceRegistry is kept until every finishing report has read it.
I read the diff and the start/finish handlers. I didn't build or run the tests.
Overall: the approach is sound. Keying state by SessionUid is the better of the two options in the issue. The lifecycle handling looks careful:
The first starter resets the process-wide state and the last finisher releases it.
The collector is detached and stopped under the lock.
TraceRegistry is cleared only when no session is active and no report is still reading it.
Late messages for unknown sessions are dropped, so nothing leaks.
The new tests cover overlap, unobserved exceptions, late messages and collector lifetime.
Suggestions (non-blocking):
Shared _htmlReportEnabledAfterDiscovery. The first overlapping starter resets it, and later starters skip the reset. A session that starts while another is already running therefore inherits the first session's resolved setting. This follows from the shared-state design, but it should be noted in the code comment next to the known ActivityListener limitation.
Process-wide counters. The _activeSessions set and the _reportsReadingTraceRegistry counter are two pieces of lifecycle state guarded by one lock. A small ProcessWideStateLease/refcount helper would keep the invariants (reset on first acquire, release on last) in one place. It would also be easier to unit test than the inline logic in OnTestSessionFinishingAsync, which is now long.
Test-only overload.BuildReportData(string sessionUid) returns an empty state for an unknown session. That is convenient for tests, but it could mask a wrong session id in a test. Throwing, or returning null, would be stricter.
Known limitation. Spans can still leak across overlapping sessions through the shared ActivityListener. Documenting it is fine. Filtering spans by the session's test ids in BuildReportData could remove it later.
Fixed the two missing session initializations in 14b3f23 and resolved both matching threads. dotnet build tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests.csproj passed with zero errors. Engine tests were not run locally, as required by AGENTS.md.
The previous Claude review's optional refactoring and stricter test-helper suggestions are left unchanged: the current lock guards both lifecycle counters, and metadata-only tests intentionally build reports without a session. The shared enabled setting and spans follow the process-wide collector lifetime described in the PR body; per-session tracing remains outside this result-isolation fix.
The approach is sound. Keying state by SessionUid is the right choice over documenting the limitation. TUnit never creates its own SessionUid (I grepped src), so the engine's messages will use the same UID as ITestSessionContext.
What I checked:
The lifecycle is consistent. First-start and last-finish own the process-wide resets. The collector is detached and stopped under the lock before report generation. TraceRegistry is released through a ref-guarded ReleaseTraceRegistry with a counter, so it is released exactly once per finisher.
Dropping messages for unknown or finished sessions avoids a leak. The SessionStateCount test covers it.
The tests cover overlapping results, overlapping unobserved exceptions, late messages, and collector lifetime.
Minor points, none blocking:
Silent drops. If MTP ever delivers an update before OnTestSessionStartingAsync (for example, a consumer ordering change), results are lost with no signal. A debug log or counter on the drop path would make that diagnosable.
BuildReportData(string sessionUid) is test-only. It silently returns an empty state for unknown sessions. The internal overload is fine, but consider a comment saying production code must use the state-based overload, so the unknown-session behaviour is not relied on.
Shared ActivityListener trace view. The known limitation (spans from the overlapping session can appear in the trace view) is documented in code. Consider filtering spans by session if the Activity tags carry a session id, as a follow-up.
Reviewed every review, inline thread, and conversation comment at 14b3f23. Claude and Codex both report no blocking findings on this head; all five threads have fixes and are resolved.
Disposition of the latest Claude suggestions: keep unknown-session drops silent for now, since they deliberately reject messages outside the registered lifecycle and there is no evidence MTP sends legitimate updates there. Keep the internal report helper unchanged: existing metadata-only tests intentionally use its empty-state fallback, and production already calls the state-based overload. Session-filtered tracing remains the documented shared-listener limitation; this PR isolates results and exceptions. These optional changes do not block promotion.
Marking ready to run full CI. Auto-merge must wait for the new ready-for-review Claude run and its review to be checked.

Guard the disabled-path TraceRegistry.Clear() with the pending-reader state.
A later session can resolve the shared HTML setting as disabled while an earlier enabled session is still building its report. The disabled branch currently clears all trace associations without checking _reportsReadingTraceRegistry, so the earlier report can omit its additional trace IDs. Use the same cleanup condition as ReleaseTraceRegistry.

Keying the report state by SessionUid fixes the problem described in the issue. I read the HtmlReporter.cs diff and did not build or run the tests. This is a solid change.
What looks good
The per-session SessionReportState is a clean replacement for the shared dictionary and queue.
Messages for unknown or finished sessions are dropped, so nothing leaks.
The _activeSessions and _reportsReadingTraceRegistry counters stop an earlier finisher from clearing TraceRegistry or disposing the collector while a later session still needs it.
Detaching and stopping the collector under the lock avoids disposing a collector that is still being read.
The shared-ActivityListener limitation is documented, and there are tests for overlapping results, overlapping unobserved exceptions, and the collector outliving a finished session.
Observations (non-blocking)
A session that starts while the last one is still generating its report. Once _activeSessions has emptied, the new session counts as the first. It then runs _githubReporter?.ResetSessionState() and resets _htmlReportEnabledAfterDiscovery to unresolved while the finishing session may still call IsHtmlReportEnabledForRun() or write the GitHub summary. The finishing session could re-resolve the enabled setting or lose its GitHub state. This window is narrow. Consider moving the GitHub and enabled-state values into SessionReportState. Alternatively, snapshot them under the lock at the start of finishing. That would remove the dependence on ordering.
Shared output path. Overlapping sessions write to the same output path, as before, so the last one to finish overwrites the other's report. The description acknowledges this. A SessionUid suffix when more than one session is active would be a small follow-up.
internal int SessionStateCount is test-only. That is fine, but consider InternalsVisibleTo plus a comment to make that clear.
Run 41546926651 succeeded, and its Claude review has no blocking findings. On re-reading every review surface, I verified CodeRabbit's disabled-path trace cleanup finding and fixed it in 1e1e933:
IsHtmlReportEnabledForRun now uses the same pending-reader/active-session condition as ReleaseTraceRegistry before clearing trace associations. A regression test checks that disabling reports preserves associations across two overlapping sessions until the final session finishes.
Moved AggressiveOptimization from the thin test helper to the production report-building overload, correcting its explanatory comment to say once per report.
Addressed CodeRabbit's linked-issue scope warning by documenting the non-overlap assumption for tracing and output files in the HTML report guide. Results and exceptions are isolated; activity collection, the resolved setting and the output path remain shared. This takes the documentation route allowed by HtmlReporter state is not scoped per session when sessions overlap #7298 for the remaining shared state.
CodeRabbit's docstring percentage is an advisory tool threshold, not a repository requirement; no boilerplate XML comments added. Claude's optional GitHub/enabled-state snapshot and stricter test-helper suggestions remain outside this result-isolation fix; the shared-state limitations are explicit in the guide.
Validation: dotnet build tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests.csproj succeeded with zero errors, and git diff --check passed. Engine tests were not run locally, per AGENTS.md; CI must execute the new regression test.
Returned to draft before pushing. Both required reviewers must review the new head before promotion; the old green CI and verdicts do not approve this commit. Auto-merge is not armed.
The process-wide state has a clear lifecycle. It is reset when the first overlapping session starts and released when the last one finishes. The _reportsReadingTraceRegistry counter stops an early finisher from clearing trace IDs that another report still reads. ReleaseTraceRegistry(ref bool) is idempotent, so the finally path cannot double-decrement.
The last finisher detaches and stops the collector under the lock, so a session that starts during report generation gets its own collector instead of having the one being read disposed. Keeping the spans while stopping the collector fits this.
ConsumeAsync drops messages for sessions that have not started or have already finished, so no state leaks. A test covers this.
The tests cover overlapping results, overlapping unobserved exceptions, late messages, collector lifetime, and trace-registry retention. The shared-listener limitation is documented in the guide and in code comments.
Suggestions (non-blocking)
The lifecycle bookkeeping (_activeSessions, _reportsReadingTraceRegistry, the collector hand-off) is spread across HtmlReporter and guarded by one lock. A small internal SharedSessionResources helper with Acquire(sessionUid) and Release(sessionUid) methods would be easier to unit-test and keep correct as the reporter grows. It could return a lease object holding the collector and the trace-registry hold.
The shared ActivityListener means spans from overlapping sessions can mix in a report. If this matters later, filtering spans by the trace IDs registered for each session's tests would give per-session trace views without a listener per session. The known-limitation note is acceptable for now.
BuildReportData(string sessionUid) falls back to an empty state for an unknown session. It is internal and used for tests only, so this is fine. A comment already says so.
Verdict: LGTM. Please make sure CI passes, since TUnit.Engine.Tests can't be run locally per the repo guidance.
Run 41546926651 succeeded and no longer blocks this PR. Rechecked all review surfaces: current head 1e1e933 has positive Claude and Codex verdicts, all five threads are resolved, and the prior CodeRabbit findings have dispositions in the last push. The latest Claude resource-helper suggestion is optional refactoring; the documented shared tracing limitation and test-helper fallback remain accepted. No blocking findings remain.
Promoting the unchanged head to ready for full CI. The ready-for-review Claude run must finish and its review must be read before auto-merge is armed.
