Generic class discovery duplicated decisions about constructor-row fallback, row membership, and class/method pairing between the generator and reflection engine. Both adapters now consume GenericClassInferencePolicy for these decisions, while keeping their own type extraction and class-source traversal. Generic methods on generic classes collect sources directly through the shared method policy in both modes.

Extend the documented source table and common parity matrix to class literal, typed and member sources, duplicate inference, inferred/uninferred and type-free rows, explicit types, and combined class/method selection. A new fixture checks parameter inference beside duplicate explicit method types across multiple constructor rows. Preserve the mixed-source type-free-row behavior tracked by #7390.

Closes #7451

Validation:

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved discovery of tests combining generic class and method parameters across multiple data sources.
    • Corrected type-argument pairing and handling of unmatched or overlapping data rows.
    • Added coverage for mixed-source scenarios and invalid or unmatched class types.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified generic class and method inference, including source priority, row selection, and known limitations.

Latest review follow-up (2777018): restore the equivalent direct reflection row fallback instead of passing mismatched concepts to SelectRowFallback; document enum outcomes and the runtime adapter boundary; name classification arguments; link #7390 from the fixture. Generator snapshots: 249 passed, 1 skipped, no changes. Shared policy: 13 passed. Seven targeted fixtures in each discovery mode: 14 runs / 32 cases matched expected results, including four intentional failure rows with the expected missing-class-row diagnostic. No new reflection APIs or behavior changes; engine integration execution remains for CI. Existing build warnings remain tracked by the issues listed above.

Walkthrough

This change adds a shared policy for generic class inference and uses it in source-generator and reflection discovery. It centralizes row selection, fallback behavior, null-row inference, and class/method type pairing. Tests and documentation cover the shared rules and combined class and method inference.

Changes: Generic Class Inference

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared inference rules
src/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator/Helpers/GenericClassInferencePolicy.cs, tests/TUnit.SourceGenerator.IncrementalTests/GenericClassInferencePolicyTests.cs
The policy defines row fallback and inclusion, null-row inference, class-row classification, type-pair completeness, and class-before-method pairing. Tests check fallback, inclusion, pair completeness, and pair ordering.
Source-generator integration
src/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator/Generators/TestMetadataGenerator.cs
The generator uses the policy to process method inference sources, pair class and method types, select rows, classify class rows, and choose fallbacks.
Reflection integration
src/TUnit.Engine/Discovery/ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs, src/TUnit.Engine/Discovery/ReflectionGenericTypeResolver.cs, src/TUnit.Engine/TUnit.Engine.csproj
Reflection discovery uses the shared policy for row inclusion, null-row inference, class-row classification, and constraint type pairing. The engine project links the policy source file.
Parity tests and documentation
tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/GenericMethodInferencePolicyTests.cs, tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7451/ClassAndMethodParameterInferenceTests.cs, docs/internal/generic-method-inference.md
The test matrix adds class-source and combined class/method cases, including unmatched or invalid class types. The documentation describes source priority, row handling, adapter responsibilities, and known limitations.

Explanation

For [#7451], the supplied whole-PR evidence shows that both discovery modes use GenericClassInferencePolicy for class-row fallback, row membership, null-row inference, and class/method type pairing. Adapter-specific type extraction and class-source traversal remain local. The documented source table and parity matrix cover class sources, typed and method sources, duplicate inference, inferred and uninferred or type-free rows, explicit types, and combined class/method selection. Shared policy tests, generator snapshots, targeted fixtures, and the parameter-inference regression fixture provide the required automated coverage. The reported validation preserves the mixed-source type-free-row behavior tracked by [#7390]. The incremental diff was unavailable, but the current PR evidence is sufficient for this assessment.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The supplied changes are limited to the shared inference policy, its generator and reflection integrations, related documentation, and tests and fixtures for [#7451]. The project link and diagnostic-test updates support that implementation. No unrelated product behavior or unrelated cleanup is demonstrated. The unavailable incremental diff does not identify an out-of-scope change.

Review: Share generic class inference selection and pairing policy

I read the new policy class and its call sites in the generator and the reflection engine. I did not build the project or run the tests, and I did not read the new test files.

What I like

  • The row-ownership, row-fallback and class/method pairing decisions now live in one place (GenericClassInferencePolicy). Both discovery modes consume it, which is what the AGENTS.md parity rule asks for. The policy takes plain values and enums, so it doesn't depend on Roslyn or reflection types.
  • The file is linked into TUnit.Engine.csproj the same way GenericMethodInferencePolicy is, so the pattern is consistent.
  • The PR reports no generator snapshot changes, a parity matrix across both modes, and an AOT publish.

Suggestions (non-blocking)

  1. Redundant ternary. MethodSources is just an alias for GenericMethodInferencePolicy.Rules. So ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs:2253 (testClass.IsGenericType ? MethodSources : Rules) picks the same array either way. Either drop the conditional, or make MethodSources return something different for generic classes. As written, a reader will assume the two paths differ.
  2. Ordering encoded twice. OwnsInstantiation uses Array.IndexOf over the Sources array. The generator also loops foreach (var source in Sources) with a switch at TestMetadataGenerator.cs:1396. Precedence is therefore defined by array order in one place and by switch handling in another, and the two can drift apart. Giving the enum explicit values (or an explicit rank) and comparing those would be cheaper and clearer than a linear search. A test asserting the order that the loop and the policy share would also help.
  3. Nearly identical predicates. NullMethodRowInfersObject(hasClassTypeSource, hasExplicitClassTypes) is !a && !b, and IncludesRow is a ternary. These are thin wrappers. They are fine for naming intent, but the call sites pass different things for the same parameter. For example, the engine passes hasClassTypeSource: false at line 1045, and the generator passes classTypeArgumentsSupplied. Please confirm that difference is intentional, and note it in a comment if it is.
  4. Static array. Sources is a mutable static readonly Source[] that is internal. Exposing it as a ReadOnlySpan or IReadOnlyList would prevent accidental mutation. It's a small point.

No correctness bugs found in the parts I read. The last two points are worth a look before merge, but I wouldn't block on them. CI, especially the engine integration suite, is the real check for the parity claims.

Review disposition for 8ff5b20: Codex reports no findings; Claude reports no correctness bugs and four non-blocking suggestions; Greptile reports safe to merge. No inline threads exist.

  1. The method-source conditional deliberately routes generic classes through the class policy entry point. Its alias currently returns the same method rules, as documented by MethodSources; no behavior change is needed.
  2. Sources is the single precedence order: the generator iterates that array and its switch extracts each source kind, while OwnsInstantiation compares positions in the same array. Switch case placement does not set iteration order, so there is no second ordering to synchronize.
  3. The null-row arguments are intentional. DiscoverGenericTestsAsync invokes BuildTestsFromMethodRows only when classDataSources.Length == 0; that helper therefore passes hasClassTypeSource: false. The general reflection path passes classDataSources.Length > 0, and the generator passes classTypeArgumentsSupplied. The helper XML documentation and caller already state the no-class-source precondition.
  4. Sources follows the existing internal GenericMethodInferencePolicy.Rules array pattern. Neither adapter mutates it; changing that representation is optional hardening, with no blocking finding here.

Keeping this reviewed head unchanged and promoting the draft for CI.

Review: Share generic class inference selection and pairing policy

Good direction. Moving the row-fallback, row-membership, null-row and pairing decisions into one policy that both adapters compile makes source-generator and reflection parity much easier to keep. The snapshot results (no generator output changes), the 13 policy tests and the 72-run fixture matrix are reassuring. The engine-side mapping (e.g. hasClassArgumentsRows: allClassRows is null) matches the documented semantics.

I found no correctness bugs. These are design concerns:

  1. OwnsInstantiation is called with constants, so it is always true. OwnsInstantiation(Source.ClassRow, Source.GenerateGenericTest) appears in both TestMetadataGenerator.cs and ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs:577. Both arguments are literals, so the call is a compile-time tautology. It reads as policy-driven, but changing the Sources order would silently change nothing at these call sites. Either pass real candidate/existing sources, or drop the call and keep the comment. As written it adds indirection without enforcing anything.

  2. foreach (var source in Sources) switch handles only 2 of 5 cases. In the generator's class-only phase, ClassRow, MethodArguments and GenerateGenericTest fall through with no handler, because those phases are implemented elsewhere. Reordering Sources would therefore change only the MDS/parameter order, not the real precedence. That makes the table partly decorative and misleading. Either make the table drive all phases, or make the policy expose only the order that is actually data-driven (for example a smaller enum or two explicit rule entries) and document the rest as adapter-owned.

  3. Boolean-soup helpers. IncludesRow(x is not null, x is not null && Matches(x), include) is awkward at every call site, and the first argument is repeated. Two bools are easy to swap by mistake. Consider IncludesRow(bool? matchesInferred, bool includeUninferred), or take the inferred-types-present flag once and a lazy match delegate. Similarly, ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments(valueCount, boundCount, hasClassTypeParameter) now forces the generator to loop with |=, which drops the early exit it had before. This is minor, but the policy function adds little over the inline code.

  4. Pair<T> and the allocation-minimizing goals. Pair is a clean replacement for Concat().ToArray(). CloseOverClass then overwrites the method half right after allocating it, so the allocation could be avoided by building the substituted tail directly. This is a minor point for a discovery hot path.

  5. MethodSources => GenericMethodInferencePolicy.Rules is a pure alias. It encodes "same as the non-generic class" in name only. Reflection has to branch (testClass.IsGenericType ? ... : ...) to pick between two identical arrays, which is dead complexity. Use Rules directly, or have the alias carry actual class-scope differences.

  6. IsCompletePair is unused in the diff I inspected. If it is covered only by the policy tests, either wire it in or remove it. An unused shared rule can drift from the adapters' real behavior.

Please keep the #7390 mixed-source type-free-row note in the doc. The behavior is preserved and tracked, so that is fine.

Overall: approve in spirit, with items 1 and 2 worth addressing so the "single policy" claim holds in practice.

Harden the diagnostic assertion against missing failure details.

The fixtures expect a diagnostic for the failed row. Output?.ErrorInfo?.Message.ShouldContain(error) can skip the message check when Output or ErrorInfo is null. Appending ShouldNotBeNull() after the conditional accesses does not change that behavior. Assert each required value explicitly.

Run 41633469766 completed successfully on the previous head; that blocker is cleared. The post-promotion review was read along with all conversation comments, reviews and inline surfaces (no review threads).

Pushed 3197baf for #7451:

  • Claude 1–2: removed the constant ownership checks and partial source-order table. The generator keeps its existing member-before-parameter extraction order explicitly; docs now distinguish shared row/pairing rules from adapter traversal and duplicate ownership.
  • Claude 5 (also raised in the earlier review): removed MethodSources and the identical-array conditional. Both adapters now use GenericMethodInferencePolicy.Rules directly.
  • CodeRabbit diagnostic assertion: require Output, ErrorInfo and Message before checking the expected diagnostic, so nulls cannot bypass validation.
  • Claude 3: retained the named, allocation-free row predicates and their existing arguments. A nullable-bool/delegate redesign is optional; no behavior defect was reported. The earlier null-row explanation still applies: BuildTestsFromMethodRows is called only without class data sources.
  • Claude 4: Pair allocates the one combined array returned by CloseOverClass; substituting its method tail does not allocate a second combined array. Avoiding the initial tail copy would be an optional optimization needing measurement, so no performance claim or change is made here.
  • Claude 6: IsCompletePair is used in TestMetadataGenerator.GetGenericTypeInstantiations to reject incomplete combined class/method type arguments before validation; it is not test-only.

Validation: generator snapshots 249 passed/1 skipped with no changes; shared policy tests 13 passed; targeted #7451 fixture 4 passed in each discovery mode; engine test project build succeeded with 0 warnings/errors. Engine integration execution remains for CI per AGENTS.md. No reflection path changed, so the original successful AOT validation remains applicable.

Returned to draft for fresh reviews of this head. No auto-merge is armed. The PR is waiting for review, rather than blocked by the old run.

Review of #7498 (shared generic class inference policy). I read the diff and found no correctness regressions. I only traced the logic and did not run the tests. The refactored call sites (Pair, IsCompletePair, NullMethodRowInfersObject, ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments, SelectRowFallback, IncludesRow and the GenericMethodInferencePolicy.Rules loop) behave the same as the code they replace. The new fixture, parity matrix rows and doc table are useful, and the doc is honest about what stays adapter-specific (#7390). Concerns: (1) The reflection call to SelectRowFallback in ReflectionGenericTypeResolver reuses its parameters for different meanings: it passes 'typeFreeClassRows is not null' as hasMatchingClassRow and 'allClassRows is null' as hasClassArgumentsRows, which reads as inverted. It matches the old 'allClassRows?.ToArray() ?? typeFreeClassRows' only because the outcomes happen to line up. A shared source of truth should receive inputs in its own vocabulary, so compute explicit, correctly named booleans first or keep the original null-coalescing expression there. (2) Several policy members are one-line boolean forwards: IncludesRow(a,b,c) is just 'a ? b : c' and NullMethodRowInfersObject is '!a && !b'. Callers now pass expressions like 'classTypes is not null && InferredTypesMatch(...)', which can hide intent and lets an adapter pass the wrong bool without the compiler noticing. The unit tests only re-assert the same truth table. Keep the policy for the parts that carry real rules (SelectRowFallback, ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments, IsCompletePair, Pair) and consider small enums or inline logic for the rest. (3) Some calls pass bare booleans, e.g. IncludesRow(..., ..., true); please use named arguments. None of these block the merge. If CI Engine and snapshot tests pass this is fine as is, and point 1 is the one I'd fix first.

Run 41633469766 passed; the old blocker no longer holds. Current head 3197baf has positive Claude and Codex verdicts, and Greptile reports no blockers. All conversation comments, reviews and inline surfaces were read; there are no inline comments or review threads.

Disposition of the latest Claude suggestions:

  1. The fallback call is in ReflectionTestDataCollector.BuildTestsForMethodRowsWithoutClassRow, rather than ReflectionGenericTypeResolver. I checked its current implementation and the policy: when allClassRows is null and typeFreeClassRows is null it selects NoClassRow and produces null; otherwise it preserves allClassRows?.ToArray() ?? typeFreeClassRows. The reviewer explicitly confirms behavior is unchanged and this naming concern is non-blocking. Retaining the reviewed implementation; a vocabulary redesign is optional.
  2. Retaining the named allocation-free shared predicates, as dispositioned previously. Enums or inline logic are optional design alternatives; no correctness defect was identified.
  3. Named arguments for literal booleans are a non-blocking readability suggestion. Keeping the reviewed head unchanged rather than starting another review round for that nit.

The CodeRabbit assertion finding was fixed by 3197baf, as documented above. No blocking or undecided findings remain. Promoting the draft for CI; marking ready triggers a fresh Claude run, which must pass and be read before auto-merge is armed. No linked prerequisite or replacement needs action, and #7451 is delivered by this PR with its closing reference already present.

Review of #7498. I read the diff and compared the reflection fallback against the pre-PR code. I did not build or run tests. The direction is good: moving row fallback, row membership and class/method pairing into one GenericClassInferencePolicy removes real duplication, and the csproj link follows the GenericMethodInferencePolicy pattern. I found no behavioral regressions. Concerns: (1) The SelectRowFallback call in ReflectionTestDataCollector.BuildTestsForMethodRowsWithoutClassRow (~line 1295) passes hasClassArgumentsRows: allClassRows is null, which reads backwards, since null means there are no class-argument rows. I traced all four input combinations and the result matches the old allClassRows?.ToArray() ?? typeFreeClassRows, so it is correct but unclear. Compute a properly named boolean in the adapter, or keep the original one-liner, because the enum adds nothing there. (2) RowFallback is a three-state enum built from two booleans, and the adapters branch on it in different shapes. If it stays, document what each adapter should do for each value. (3) ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments takes three loosely typed primitives, and the two ints are easy to swap. Use named arguments at the call sites or a small record struct. (4) Mixed-source type-free-row behavior is left to #7390. Add a see-#7390 marker in the fixture so the gap stays discoverable. The docs update and shared policy tests are useful. The PR description reports AOT publish and no snapshot changes, and I did not re-run them. Overall this looks reasonable to merge, and item 1 is worth fixing first.
