Infer generic class types from inherited literal arguments - #7544
Generic classes now infer concrete types from inherited literal constructor arguments, including rows declared across multiple base classes. Both inference paths reuse the base-inclusive literal collection, and null method rows recognize inherited constructor data without treating inherited GenerateGenericTest attributes as explicit instantiations.
Adds isolated generator snapshots and runtime fixtures for inherited-only rows, direct plus inherited rows, generic methods, and null method rows. Removes the explicit-type workaround from the #7426 inherited literal fixture. Constructor source partitioning remains in the sibling issue.
Also refreshes two stale snapshots after reproducing their failures with the unchanged origin/main generator: ClassArgumentParameterTypesTests now uses cached AOT-compatible property getters, and GenericPropertyMetadataTests uses direct constructor calls. No generator behavior was changed for these snapshot corrections.
Validation: net10.0 core generator suite: 330 passed, one existing skip. Targeted #7490 tests: 13 passed in each of generated and reflection discovery; #7426 InheritedArguments: one passed in each mode. Reviewed snapshot changes; no received files committed. Engine tests are left to CI per repository instructions. Windows-only snapshot legs were not run locally.
Generic test cases now recognize argument data inherited from base classes, including when combined with arguments declared on the test class or its methods.
Inherited arguments are handled for generic test types and methods, including nullable values and mixed data sources.
Generic tests can now correctly infer and register test cases when their argument data comes from inherited sources.
Review fix: inherited nonliteral constructor sources now participate in class-row reconciliation. Added an isolated mixed literal/typed-source snapshot and runtime fixture; reproduced 1 pass/1 fail before the fix, then 2 passes in each discovery mode. Updated net10.0 generator validation: 331 passed, 1 existing skip.
Review fix: typed constructor sources now infer through the same [TestConstructor]-aware constructor used for class rows. The new inherited mixed-source fixture declares competing constructors with reversed generic parameter positions; before the fix it produced 1 pass/2 failures, and after the fix exactly 2 rows pass in each discovery mode. Reviewed and updated the isolated snapshot. Also corrected the loop repository guide to list the Engine/AOT checks now required by live main protection.
Validation after this fix: net10.0 generator suite 331 passed, 1 existing skip; selected-constructor regression 2 passed generated and 2 passed reflection; original mixed-source fixture 2 passed in each mode. Windows-only generator snapshots and full Engine/AOT suites remain for CI. No public API or reflection paths changed.
The source generator now includes inherited class-level arguments and data sources in generic test inference and metadata generation. Regression fixtures cover inherited and combined rows, generic methods, nullable arguments, and mixed data sources. The change also updates documented merge-gate requirements.
Generic inference and class-argument processing include attributes from base types. Data-source checks also include base types. [GenerateGenericTest] remains limited to the current class. Typed class-data-source inference uses GetClassRowConstructor.
Inherited argument test fixtures tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7490/*, tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7426/Tests.cs, tests/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests/InheritedGenericArgumentsTests.cs
Test cases cover direct and inherited rows, multiple inheritance levels, generic methods, nullable method arguments, and inherited class data sources. The test harness runs the relevant project files.
Generic test classes with typed class data sources can be instantiated with different type arguments depending on whether generated or reflection discovery is used. This only affects constructors where the generic parameter is not in the first position. Align the inference rule across both modes, or document the intended difference, before merging.

Explanation
Directly linked issue #7542 asks for base-inclusive literal collection in generic test-class inference. The merge-base-to-head diff of TestMetadataGenerator.cs shows this change. classArgumentsAttributes now uses GetAttributesIncludingBaseTypes(). The generic-method path (GenerateGenericTestWithConcreteTypes) reuses that collection. The class-literal loop in the inference path also uses it. The explicit GenerateGenericTest check still reads only the current type's attributes, so inherited attributes do not count as explicit instantiations. Class data-source presence checks (HasDataSources) and the typed class-data-source check also include inherited attributes. The added fixtures in tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7490 (Tests.cs and InheritedMixedSourcesTests.cs) cover inherited-only rows, multiple inheritance levels, direct plus inherited rows, generic methods, and null method rows. The isolated snapshot InheritedGenericArgumentsTests.* is present, and the explicit-type workaround is removed from the #7426 fixture. The author reports the net10.0 generator suite passing and targeted runtime tests passing in generated and reflection modes. I did not re-run these tests. Constructor source partitioning is not added. The typed-source constructor selection change is covered by the selected-constructor fixture, so it does not replace the sibling work.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The generator and runtime fixture changes support #7542. Two changes are supporting corrections: the typed-source constructor selection change (GetClassRowConstructor in place of the widest public constructor) is covered by the InheritedSelectedConstructor fixture, and the two refreshed snapshots (ClassArgumentParameterTypesTests.Test.verified.txt and GenericPropertyMetadataTests.GeneratesCachedAotCompatibleGetters.verified.txt) are test-only expectation updates that the author reports reproducing on unchanged origin/main. However, .agents/skills/issue-pr-loop/references/repository.md changes the agent repository guide to list Engine and AOT branch-protection checks. The author states this as a separate correction. It does not implement any objective in #7542, and the issue scope covers generator source, #7490 and #7426 test fixtures, and an isolated snapshot fixture only. This is a demonstrated unrelated change.
Resolution
Remove the .agents/skills/issue-pr-loop/references/repository.md change from this pull request. Deliver it in a separate pull request or a separate issue if the guide update is still needed. Keep the generator, fixture, and snapshot changes that support #7542.

A rabbit checks the rows in flight From base to class, each type in sight Generic methods join the queue Null values make their passage through Fresh snapshots mark the trail anew
The change is small, targeted and consistent. I found no blocking issues.
What I checked
TestMetadataGenerator.cs now uses GetAttributesIncludingBaseTypes() in all five places where constructor [Arguments] and data sources are collected: type-argument inference, HasDataSources, and concrete-type generation. The two loops that re-queried GetAttributes() now reuse the already-collected classArgumentsAttributes. That removes a repeated symbol walk and keeps the two paths from diverging.
Splitting the GenerateGenericTest check so it only looks at the type itself, while data sources look at base types, matches the intent in the comment that explicit instantiations are not inherited. The new snapshot and runtime fixtures cover that distinction.
The regenerated snapshot output (new X<T>(CastHelper.Cast<T>(args[0])), CreateGenericGetter) is AOT-friendly and has no Activator or dynamic. The two stale snapshots are documented in the PR description as unrelated to generator behaviour.
Suggestions (non-blocking)
GetAttributesIncludingBaseTypes() is now called several times per test class in discovery. If it isn't already cached per ITypeSymbol, compute it once in the metadata-collection step and pass it down. That also guarantees every consumer sees the same list.
The task says metadata collection must behave identically in source-generated and reflection modes. The PR description reports 13 passing tests in each mode, which covers this. Keeping the _7490 fixtures in both modes in CI will guard it against regressions.
Add a case where the same [Arguments] value appears on both a derived class and a base class. That would confirm the intended de-duplication or ordering. As far as I can tell from the snapshot, the inherited rows are simply concatenated.
I did not run the tests locally. The TUnit.Engine.Tests suite is left to CI, per the repository instructions.
[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no new blocking issue was found.
Summary
Generic test classes now infer types from inherited literal constructor rows. The latest change also makes typed-source checks respect the selected test constructor.
Generic test classes infer types from inherited argument rows.
Inherited class data sources contribute rows to generic tests.
Saved generator snapshots match current output, and the guide lists current checks.
Disposition of Claude suggestions: the repeated base-attribute walks are real, but caching needs allocation/performance measurements and a safe symbol-cache lifetime; no speculative performance change is needed for this correctness fix. The existing generated/reflection fixtures remain in the test project for CI. The additional identical-value/multiple-ancestor coverage is tracked in #7545 alongside Greptile’s non-blocking finding. Both required reviewers approved the unchanged current head bff3e03.
Marked ready after Claude and Codex approved bff3e03 and all findings received dispositions. Head is unchanged; all review threads are resolved. Promotion queued Claude run 41761881497 (https://github.com/thomhurst/TUnit/actions/runs/41761881497). The next unit should read its verdict and all review surfaces, then arm auto-merge with Enable-AutoMerge.ps1 if the gate permits. No local code changes or new validation were needed for these non-blocking dispositions.
Small, focused fix. Generic-class type inference now uses GetAttributesIncludingBaseTypes() for [Arguments] rows, so inherited constructor literals infer concrete types.
What I checked:
The two inference paths (classArgumentsAttributes at the top and in GenerateGenericTestWithConcreteTypes) now share one base-inclusive collection. This removes the duplicated GetAttributes() filters that could drift apart, and I like that.
classTypeArgumentsSupplied is split correctly. GenerateGenericTest is still read from the type itself, because explicit instantiations aren't inherited. Data-source attributes are read through the base chain.
HasDataSources also uses the inherited lookup, so null method rows recognise inherited constructor data.
GetAttributesIncludingBaseTypes returns derived-first, then base attributes, and there's no AttributeUsage.Inherited check. If ArgumentsAttribute is ever Inherited = false, this would diverge from reflection mode. It's worth a quick check, or a comment saying the behaviour is intentional. Reflection's GetCustomAttributes(inherit: true) honours Inherited.
The base-class types (and generic base-class type arguments) are never substituted. A generic base that declares [Arguments(1)] is fine, but one that maps its own type parameters onto the derived class's parameters relies on ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments / InferTypesFromClassArgumentsAttribute seeing the derived symbol. A generic-base-to-generic-derived case would be a useful extra snapshot.
The two stale snapshot refreshes (CreateGenericGetter, direct construction) are unrelated to this change. The description says they were reproduced against unchanged main, which is fine, but a separate PR would keep this one's history clean.
Pushed 5efa687 to address the new blocking Codex finding; the inline reply documents reproduction and validation. Original waiting run 41761881497 completed successfully, but this new head requires fresh automated review and CI. The PR remains ready, so Codex reviews automatically; no duplicate manual review request is needed.
Disposition of the promotion Claude review's non-blocking points: ArgumentsAttribute (including its generic form) does not set Inherited=false, so the current inherited literal behavior matches reflection's inheritance contract. A generic-base mapping fixture is an optional coverage extension; constructor literal attributes cannot refer to type parameters, and this change adds no new substitution path. Keeping the current focused regression for the concrete discovered mismatch. The two earlier snapshot refreshes remain necessary for the documented unchanged-main failures and were already explained in the PR body; splitting them now would leave this branch's generator suite failing.
Validation: generator suite 331 passed, 1 existing skip; targeted InheritedMixedSources runtime regression 2 passed generated and 2 passed reflection. Windows-only snapshots and Engine.Tests remain for CI per repository guidance.

Include inherited non-literal sources in row reconciliation.
If a base class has [Arguments(42)] and a typed source of string rows, a derived C<T>(T value) with a method row [Arguments("x")] reaches this pass. The self-only scan misses the inherited string source, so C<string> gets HasNoClassRow and its test fails. Scan base attributes here too.

Review: inherited literal constructor args for generic class inference
The change is focused and consistent. The generic-class inference paths (classArgumentsAttributes, the classTypeArgumentsSupplied check, HasDataSources, and otherClassDataSources) now all use GetAttributesIncludingBaseTypes(). The two duplicated GetAttributes().Where(ArgumentsAttribute) lookups now reuse the single collected classArgumentsAttributes, which removes the risk of the two paths drifting apart again.
Splitting classTypeArgumentsSupplied is a good call. [GenerateGenericTest] stays derived-type-only, while data sources are inherited, matching the new comment. Generator and reflection modes agree because the rule is the same in both.
Observations (non-blocking):
GetAttributesIncludingBaseTypes walks self and base types, so derived and base [Arguments] rows are concatenated. If a derived class re-declares the same row as its base, you would get a duplicate class row. The tests cover direct plus inherited rows, but not an identical literal on both. A quick snapshot confirming the expected behaviour (dedupe or intentional duplicate) would pin this down.
A small GetInheritedClassArguments(typeSymbol) helper would remove the repeated .Where(a => a.AttributeClass?.Name == "ArgumentsAttribute") filter and give the intent a name. The filter matches by the string name ArgumentsAttribute, which is existing behaviour but easy to centralise.
The two refreshed snapshots (CreateGenericGetter, direct constructor calls) are described as correcting stale files, with no generator change. That is plausible. Bundling them is fine, but they are worth a glance in CI on the Windows legs, which were not run locally.
Test coverage is good: isolated generator snapshots, runtime fixtures in both discovery modes, and the mixed literal/typed-source regression added in response to review. No .received.txt files are committed.
Overall: LGTM, with the duplicate-row case worth confirming.

Use the row constructor for typed-source inference.
InferClassTypesFromTypedClassDataSource selects the widest constructor instead of GetClassRowConstructor. Inherited typed sources now enter this reconciliation path. With C(object, T) and [TestConstructor] C(T, object), the helper can infer a different type argument from the class-row constructor, so a valid source can be rejected as having no matching class row.
Suggested fix
- var constructor = classSymbol.Constructors- .Where(c => !c.IsStatic && c.DeclaredAccessibility == Accessibility.Public)- .OrderByDescending(c => c.Parameters.Length)- .FirstOrDefault();+ var constructor = GetClassRowConstructor(classSymbol);
