Tests whose method data source returns a type with a conversion operator could pass in managed execution but fail in Native AOT with “No AOT converter was found”. Converter discovery now resolves the referenced source member using the same resolver as generated data factories and scans its return type, including nested tuples, async/enumerable wrappers, arrays, and concrete collections.

The change covers local and external providers, generic and derived source attributes, inherited members, overload selection, properties, fields, and class/parameter data sources. It excludes inaccessible and ambiguous user-defined conversions while retaining built-in decimal numeric conversions; Roslyn classifies those numeric conversions without an operator method. Regression coverage includes recursive collections and ambiguous metadata names. Two stale metadata snapshots were also refreshed for cached AOT property getters and direct closed-generic constructor factories.

Validation on SDK 10.0.403, macOS arm64:

  • Full core generator suite, net10.0: 334 passed, 1 existing skipped test; snapshots unchanged by the final fix. The new decimal converter regression failed before the fix and passed afterward.
  • Targeted _7402 tuple regressions: 24 passed in generated mode and 24 passed with --reflection.
  • Earlier _7511 validation: 13 passed in generated, reflection, and Release Native AOT modes.
  • Release Native AOT publish (-p:Aot=true --use-current-runtime -m:1): succeeded; 24 targeted _7402 tuple rows and 13 _7511 rows passed in the native executable.
  • git diff --check: passed.

Built-in decimal-to-integral conversions now use Convert.ChangeType in both generated converters and the runtime fallback, keeping generated, reflection, and Native AOT execution consistent. Explicitly registered converters retain priority. The built-in policy rounds to nearest with midpoint-to-even (1.9m → 2, 2.5m → 2, 3.5m → 4) and throws OverflowException for out-of-range values; generated decimal operators previously truncated. Numeric registrations, including char-to-decimal, remain intact. The new regression covers all eight integral targets with fractional and midpoint inputs (24 rows); 16 rows failed before the fix. All 24 pass in generated, reflection, and Release Native AOT execution. All 60 _7402 tuple rows also pass in each mode. Full net10.0 generator suite: 334 passed, 1 existing skip; snapshots unchanged. Release Native AOT publish and git diff --check pass.

Follow-up validation: explicitly registered decimal-to-int converters retain priority (a regression failed before the fix and passes now). Overflow behavior is covered. Full net10.0 generator suite: 335 passed, 1 existing skip; snapshots unchanged. All 38 #7511 rows and 60 tuple rows pass in generated, reflection, and Release Native AOT modes; AOT publishing passes.

Other frameworks and operating systems remain for CI. The full engine suite was not run locally, per repository instructions. Existing restore warning NU1902 is tracked by #7412; the test application's existing trimming/AOT warnings remain. Analyzer support for inherited-property source placement is tracked by #7551.

Release note

Built-in decimal-to-integral test-data conversions now consistently round to nearest with midpoint-to-even across generated, reflection, and Native AOT execution (1.9m → 2, 2.5m → 2, 3.5m → 4). Code that previously received truncation from a generated decimal operator can observe a different value. Out-of-range values throw OverflowException. Explicitly registered converters retain priority and can supply truncation when required.

Closes #7511

Walkthrough

The converter generator now resolves method-data-source return types and scans conversion operators in those types. It also traverses arrays, generic arguments, and supported enumerable elements, with recursion guards and accessibility and conversion checks. Generator tests and test-project fixtures cover the changes.

Explanation

The changes meet the coding requirements of [#7511]. AotConverterGenerator resolves MethodDataSource members through TestMetadataGenerator.ResolveMethodDataSourceMember and scans the return types of methods, properties, and fields. The recursive scan covers tuple elements, arrays, generic IEnumerable<T> and IAsyncEnumerable<T>, and wrapped async results. Operators are kept only when Roslyn's classified conversion matches the selected operator, or when the conversion is a built-in numeric conversion. The built-in numeric case restores the decimal converters that the ambiguity filter had removed (Reference_Tuple_Character_Can_Be_Converted_To_Decimal). Generator tests cover source-only types, tuples, arrays, concrete and recursive collections, async wrappers, generic and inherited providers, properties, fields, overloads, and inaccessible or ambiguous cases. The _7511 runtime fixtures cover implicit and explicit conversions without manual AotConverterRegistry registrations. The reported generated, reflection, and Native AOT results satisfy the verification criteria. In this pass, I did not re-read AotConverterGenerator. The decimal fix rests on the PR description and the summary of the changed file, not on a fresh code read.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The production changes implement method-source return-type discovery and the conversion scan for [#7511]. The TestMetadataGenerator change only moves ResolveMethodDataSourceMember from private to internal. Its signature and body are unchanged, so it exposes the shared resolver without changing behavior. The two metadata snapshot updates (GenericPropertyMetadataTests and ClassArgumentParameterTypesTests) do not follow from a change in this PR's generator code. The diff shows that TestMetadataGenerator changed only in visibility. The updates align test expectations with generator output that already exists. The PR description discloses them as stale snapshot refreshes needed for the full core generator suite. They change test expectations only and add no product behavior. The added fixtures, generator tests, and converter snapshot support the requested behavior. The snapshot refresh is a disclosed, test-only side change that a reviewer should confirm is acceptable.

Review: Discover AOT converters from method data source return types

Overall this looks good, and I found nothing blocking.

What I checked

  • The scan reuses TestMetadataGenerator.ResolveMethodDataSourceMember, which is now internal. Converter discovery therefore follows the same overload, inheritance and Arguments rules as the generated data factories, so the two can't drift apart. This is better than a second resolver.
  • It walks the base chain to MethodDataSourceAttribute, so InstanceMethodDataSource and the generic MethodDataSource<T> forms are covered.
  • The new array handling in CollectConversionsForType is a small, correct addition.
  • The new test asserts that UnusedValue, which sits on a non-selected overload, is not converted. That confirms overload selection actually works.
  • The two refreshed snapshots (generic property getters and closed generic constructors) are explained in the description and match the intended AOT-friendly paths.

Minor suggestions (non-blocking)

  1. GloballyQualifiedNonGeneric() != "..." is evaluated for every base type of every data source attribute, and it allocates strings. Comparing against compilation.GetTypeByMetadataName("TUnit.Core.MethodDataSourceAttribute") once per scan with SymbolEqualityComparer would be cheaper and sturdier. This runs in the generator transform, so it matters for IDE responsiveness.
  2. ScanMethodDataSourceReturnType hardcodes the constructor-argument shapes: (Type, string) and (string). If MethodDataSourceAttribute gains a new constructor shape, converters would silently go missing. Sharing the argument parsing with the factory generator would remove that coupling.
  3. The test does not cover a data source member that can't be resolved, or a provider type that is an open generic. A quick case showing the scan doesn't throw would be reassuring.

Good fix and well tested, including Native AOT publish validation.

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 5/5

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; the previous converter-priority issue is fixed.

Summary

The PR discovers AOT converters from method data source return types, including wrapped values and concrete collections.

  • AOT test runs can convert values returned by method data sources.
  • Decimal-to-integral casts round the same way in generated and runtime paths.
  • Generated metadata snapshots show cached getters and direct constructor calls.

Review dispositions for b247ff7:

  • Both Greptile blockers are fixed: generated converters reject inaccessible source/target/containing types, and concrete sequences expose their element types through implemented sequence interfaces. Each inline thread has a commit-specific reply.
  • Claude suggestion 1: replaced per-base-type display-string comparison with Roslyn symbol comparison for both generic and non-generic MethodDataSourceAttribute definitions.
  • Claude suggestion 2: retained parsing for the existing supported constructors. There is no unsupported constructor today; changing the factory parser is unnecessary for this fix. A future constructor addition should update both consumers. Member resolution remains shared with the factory generator.
  • Claude suggestion 3: added missing-member and open-generic-provider cases, alongside accessibility and concrete-collection cases; the generator completes without errors.

Validation: full net10.0 core generator suite: 331 passed, 1 existing skip; existing snapshots unchanged. All 11 targeted _7511 tests pass in generated mode and reflection mode. Release Native AOT publish succeeded; all 11 targeted rows passed in the native executable. The test application still emits its previously documented trimming/AOT warnings outside these regressions. Other framework/platform validation remains for CI.

Review of #7547

Overall this looks good. It fixes a real AOT gap (#7511). The converter scan now resolves the MethodDataSource member with the same ResolveMethodDataSourceMember the factory generator uses, so overloads, inherited members, properties and fields can't drift between the two. I only read the diff and did not build or run the tests.

What I checked

  • The visited set in CollectConversionsForType stops recursion on self-referential generics. It is created per call, so the cached _typeConversions results stay correct.
  • The IsAccessibleType rewrite replaces about 60 lines of hand-rolled logic with compilation.IsSymbolAccessibleWithin plus a recursive check of the type arguments. This is simpler. It also fixes a real bug: the old same-assembly shortcut returned true for private and nested-private types, which the generated top-level converter class can't reference. The new HandlesConcreteCollectionsAndInaccessibleSourceTypes test covers this.
  • The AllInterfaces scan is limited to System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable<T> and IAsyncEnumerable<T>, so unrelated interfaces aren't treated as data wrappers.
  • The regression tests and the verified snapshot cover implicit and explicit operators, tuples, arrays, async wrappers, local and external providers, and parameter-level sources.

Suggestions (non-blocking)

  1. ScanMethodDataSourceReturnType calls compilation.GetTypeByMetadataName twice for every attribute scanned, including attributes that aren't method data sources. This runs on the generator hot path. Check attribute.AttributeClass against a cheap name filter first, or resolve the two symbols once per compilation (for example in the caches object) and pass them in.
  2. ScanAttributesForTypes now takes containingType and compilation just for this one scan. Bundling them into a small context object would keep the signature stable if more attribute-driven scans are added.
  3. ResolveMethodDataSourceMember is now internal in a very large TestMetadataGenerator. Moving it into a small shared helper class would make the dependency between the two generators explicit.

None of these should block merging, assuming CI passes.

Disposition of the latest Claude non-blocking suggestions: retain the current metadata lookups, method parameters, and shared resolver location for this focused correctness change. No measured performance regression was reported; a cheap attribute-name filter would miss derived attributes. A context object and extracting the resolver are optional structural changes with no behavior change required here.

Fixed the blocking expanding-sequence finding in a1a148f; the inline thread has the details. Full net10.0 core generator suite: 331 passed, 1 existing skip; snapshots unchanged. This changes generator traversal only; the previously documented runtime and Native AOT validation remains applicable, but was not rerun for this guard. Other target frameworks remain for CI.

Review of #7547

The approach is sound. Reusing TestMetadataGenerator.ResolveMethodDataSourceMember means converter discovery and factory generation resolve overloads, inherited members, properties and fields the same way, so the two can't drift apart. The visited and expandingSequences guards cover recursive sequence types such as Rows<T> : IEnumerable<Rows<T[]>>. The regression tests and snapshots cover each wrapper shape (tuple, array, async, parameter and class sources).

I didn't build or run anything. This is a read of the diff only.

Suggestions, none of them blocking:

  1. Cache the attribute symbol lookups. ScanMethodDataSourceReturnType calls compilation.GetTypeByMetadataName twice for every attribute on every method, parameter and class, before it checks whether the attribute is a method data source at all. This runs in a generator hot path. Resolve both symbols once, for example in the existing caches object or once per compilation, and pass them in. The base-type walk can also bail out early for attributes that aren't in the TUnit.Core namespace.

  2. Make the resolver's visibility explicit. ResolveMethodDataSourceMember is now internal on a very large TestMetadataGenerator, and the AOT generator depends on it. Moving it to a small shared helper (for example DataSourceMemberResolver) would make that dependency visible and avoid growing the god class. Both generators would then call the helper.

  3. Check the IsAccessibleType rewrite. The new version relies on IsSymbolAccessibleWithin(type, compilation.Assembly). The old code returned true for type parameters and special types; the new code takes those cases from Roslyn, which I expect to return true. The HandlesConcreteCollectionsAndInaccessibleSourceTypes test covers inaccessible sources, so it's worth confirming that a case with an open generic or type-parameter argument is covered as well.

  4. Pattern-match the namespace chain. The System.Collections.Generic check is a long nested pattern. Comparing sequence.OriginalDefinition against compilation.GetSpecialType(SpecialType.System_Collections_Generic_IEnumerable_T) is simpler. IAsyncEnumerable<T> could use a metadata-name lookup, cached as in point 1.

I found no correctness bugs.

Current-head review disposition (a1a148f): Claude and Codex report no blocking findings; Greptile confirms the previous blockers are fixed. Retain the current symbol lookups, shared resolver location, and sequence namespace pattern for this correctness fix, as previously dispositioned. The namespace check explicitly includes the global namespace, and extraction/caching remain optional refactors without a measured regression. The existing HandlesConcreteCollectionsAndInaccessibleSourceTypes regression includes an open-generic provider (typeof(List<>)), a generic argument with a private type, and a recursive generic sequence; no additional correctness finding was identified by the reviewer. All inline threads have commit-specific dispositions and are resolved.

Marking ready for CI after both required reviewers approved this head.

Review of #7547

The fix looks sound and targeted. I read the source diff and the generated snapshot. I did not run the tests.

What I checked

  • ScanMethodDataSourceReturnType reuses TestMetadataGenerator.ResolveMethodDataSourceMember, so converter discovery follows the same resolution as the generated data factories. That covers overloads, inherited members, properties and fields. Making that method internal is the right way to avoid a second resolver that could drift out of sync.
  • Walking the base-type chain to MethodDataSourceAttribute picks up derived attributes such as InstanceMethodDataSourceAttribute. Handling both the (Type, string) and generic <T>(string) constructor forms matches how the factories bind them.
  • CollectConversionsForType now unwraps arrays, which fills the array-return gap. The snapshot shows converters for class, scalar, tuple, array, async and parameter sources.
  • The class-level and constructor-parameter scans now pass classSymbol, so class and parameter data sources are covered as well.

Minor suggestions (non-blocking)

  1. If the member cannot be resolved (ResolveMethodDataSourceMember returns null), the scan silently adds nothing. That is fine for the generator, but the AOT failure it prevents is a runtime "No AOT converter was found". An existing diagnostic or a comment saying the unresolved case is reported elsewhere would help the next reader.
  2. The base-type walk compares GloballyQualifiedNonGeneric() strings for every attribute on every method and parameter. A cheap early check on the attribute class name would avoid string allocations in this incremental generator. It is probably not measurable, but the hot-path guidance in AGENTS.md makes it worth a look.
  3. The PR also refreshes two stale snapshots (generic property getters and closed generic constructors). They are unrelated to Native AOT omits conversion operators used only by method data source return types #7511 but were disclosed in the description, so I'm fine with them.

The PR adds regression tests for both execution modes and AOT, and the description shows the validation steps. Approving in spirit; I'd wait for CI on the other target frameworks.

Run 41767049458 completed successfully, so the earlier wait no longer applies. Fixed the new CodeRabbit metadata ambiguity finding in dc0dc22; the inline thread records validation (332 passed, 1 existing skip; snapshots unchanged).

Disposition of Claude's post-promotion suggestions: the new assembly-aware cache also removes repeated metadata lookups. The comment about GloballyQualifiedNonGeneric string comparisons describes an older implementation: current code uses symbol equality. Keep unresolved-member handling unchanged: a missing member supplies no return type to scan, so no converter can be inferred; adding diagnostics belongs to member validation rather than this converter scan. The existing missing-member/open-generic regression verifies safe handling. The snapshot refreshes remain intentional and already documented.

The new head needs fresh automated review and CI; auto-merge remains disabled until those gates pass.

Review of #7547

I found no blocking issues. The approach is sound.

What I checked

  • Converter discovery now reuses TestMetadataGenerator.ResolveMethodDataSourceMember, so it gets the same overload, inheritance, property and field resolution as the generated factories. That avoids the two paths drifting apart.
  • Matching MethodDataSourceAttribute in the attribute's own assembly handles the ambiguous-metadata-name and extern-alias case. A test covers it.
  • The recursion guards are visited plus expandingSequences, which tracks the current path only. This stops infinite expansion such as Rows<T> : IEnumerable<Rows<T[]>> and still allows sibling instantiations. Array and sequence-interface unwrapping is limited to System.Collections.Generic types.
  • IsAccessibleType now uses IsSymbolAccessibleWithin plus a recursive check of type arguments. This is simpler than the hand-rolled version and also fixes private and nested-private types.
  • The regression tests cover implicit and explicit operators, generics, inheritance and async wrappers. The snapshot changes look intentional.

Minor suggestions, non-blocking

  • CollectConversionsForType is now fairly long. Moving the sequence-interface unwrapping into a small helper such as GetSequenceElementTypes would make it easier to read.
  • ResolveMethodDataSourceMember changed from private to internal. A short comment saying it is shared with AotConverterGenerator would stop it being made private again by accident.
